My personal kit
Jun 22 2009, 3:07 AM EDT
I've spent a few days putting together my survival kit, both helpful for the event of Z-day, or and disaster. I know I am missing a few things still, but I have the following:Gloves A warm hat (very important) Two ropes, light weight but long and strong A small, wooden club which can do more damage then expected A heavier club, more powerful but bulkier and heavier (would be more used than previously mentioned club) A short, medium and long wave radio, hand cranked. A bottle of methylated spirits. A few shorter lengths of rope. A couple of meters of fabric (I'd say about two), could be used for blankets, fashioning simple clothes or repairing other ones. A few simple tools: two screwdrivers, wrench, allen keys and pliers A torch A lighter Matches Pain killers Thread, needle, pins. small binoculars Chalk (could be very helpful for marking spots for others) Couple of pens Blank book. I know I am severely lacking in some very important things: clothes (i would need at lease one spare set, no?), food, and medical supplies. I plan to also get a hatchet, and that would replace my larger club. Some simple cooking supplies, and a small cooker would also be useful. I have a sleeping bag, but I'm not sure if I would take it. For a gun, my plan would involve going to the place where my rifle is stored (long story) Is there anything else I am forgetting/shouldn't take? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

NightFox,You have some great stuff in there that I wouldn't have thought have straight away (chalk, simple tools.) However, I don't see the point of having two clubs, seems like dead weight. Also, did you make any provision for hydration? I recommend packing a gallon with you for short hops in between shelters. I don't know what kind of environment you are dealing with, but a lot of a person's kit is going to vary a LOT with the Latitude they're situated in. As for the rope, it's a good idea, but don't weight yourself down with it. I'd recommend a 10 yard length of half inch climbing rope and another 10 yard length of parachute cord. Be careful of what kind of fabric you take with you. I'd only bring a few square yards of rip-stop nylon, tarp, and for warmth I'd rely on a mummy-bag. Not taking your sleeping bag is a really bad idea, take it. Medical supplies are very important, but don't get too fancy. 2 bottles of hydrogen peroxide, a scalpel and forcep, a goodsupply of Gauss bandages, medical tape, and band aids should be fine. Theoretically, getting a good supply of prescription-grade antibiotics and pain-killers would be ideal, but I don't endorse that (legal reasons, anyone?) One thing that just came to mind, you might consider bringing flares/flare gun. They would come in handy perchance a helicopter passes by or whatnot, also good for distracting zombies. I'm sure there is way more to be said, Boomslang1991 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Ah yes, water. I didn't think of that the first time, but I did add it to my list, I just forgot to write it while writing the thread. The rope, I thought a lot about this. I'm not sure of the lengths of the rope, I think one is about 25 meters, and the other about 15. They are both relatively light. The fabric I may get rid of: not sure how useful it would be, I might be better to get some higher quality stuff and use that for warmth, and if necessary repair. The only problem with my sleeping bag is that it is quite bulky. It's warm (it can get cold down here, probably not enough to freeze to death, but bloody cold anyway), but not one of the really good, small ones that are also warm. Ah well, I'm sure I could tie it to my bag. I was considering an umbrella, what do you think? Medical supplies *shouldn't* be too hard to get; the most important ones are just over the counter, and for anything else, my father is a doctor *wink*. I already have plenty of prescription antibiotics, but not sure how useful they would be (doxycyclene, erithrimycin and isotane - all for my acne, so probably useless), but I could always trade them to people, and the second one I know has other uses (can't remember what, though. Should look it up.) and I reckon the others do too. For the scalpel I would just use my knife (another thing I forgot to mention). It's not really a practical combat knife, it's too short, but it could be useful for putting zombies, people and animals out of their misery, if necessary. Flares would be very useful (on a side note, is it possible to set something on fire with them?). I've got instructions somewhere on how to make them, should probably read that. Proper store bought ones would also be useful. When my father next replaces the flares on his boat, maybe I'll take the old ones. Do you find this valuable? |

for rope I would recommend is 550' paracordhttp://www.amazon.com/550lb-Type-III-Paracord-Black/dp/B000S5ODNC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1245661251&sr=8-1 You can "fold" the rope to be shorter for different applications. Food: for this you can choose anything really. I'm gonna make some homemade MRE's and powder gatorade. I'm gues methylated spirits is some sort of flavor drink. To cook the food (if you go with homemade MRE's) get a canteen and canteen cup that comes with a stove like this: http://www.joesarmynavyonline.com/catalog/us_cup.jpg Probably some chemical glow sticks too. Sleeping bag is nice for me I'll be taking a small one (or smallest one I can get to fit me) and a tree hammock with bug net and roof. So I can sleep higher in the trees away from zombies. That is all I can think of and this stuff is not a priority you can go with whatever you want. Do you find this valuable? |

"I'm gues methylated spirits is some sort of flavor drink. "Main thing to mention. No. No, methylated spirits is NOT a drink. If someone offers it to you, do not drink it. Methylated spirits is 100% alcohol. Flammable and toxic. Also it is fatal, though I would not recommend it as a method of suicide (neither in z-day or if you are depressed) as it kills slowly and painfully. For food, I'm still not sure. Long life, of course. Cans would be good, but they weigh too much. Sleeping in trees is another option which I would consider. However, do not assume they will not be able to climb. Like I mentioned on the homemade MRE's there is stuff that lasts a long time like sealed tuna and ramen noodles basically sealed stuff.. Edit: Here is some videos on this gus homemade MRE if you are still interested. http://www.youtube.com/user/hipoint45 If not then just get some Clif bars Do you find this valuable? |

Yeah, that ain't bad. I will have to consider doing that. It would be more for if I decide to take my hermit/on the move/leave the cities plan. For staying in the city I would just use long life stuff in cans etc. I only need lightweight-made-myself for traveling, for obvious reasons.

Yea, water is kinda important ;) Trust me, you want to get a small, light, and warm sleeping bag. I've done plenty of survivalist camping before (without shelter or anything else than a knife, a quart of water, and the clothes on my back) and trying to sleep at night sucks! Leaves and dry grass make excellent insulator, but they only go so far. If you are cold at night your body will go into hypothermia and you won't end up getting sleep, or you will sleep and not wake up. Either way, it's bloody miserable. You will want to get a small scalpel, trust me, done a few procedures on myself with the knife (not a scapul) before and it would have been a lot quicker and neater if I had it.
