Body Armor- Dont worry about military grade body armor unless you expect to fight ARMED individuals - Thick, real leather is great for maneuverablity and bite protection - Ventilated motor cycle gloves are great hand protection - Shin high/combat boots are great ankle support and aid in crawling/prone zombie leg bites - Steel toes...good for kickin', can't stop a 45 cal. round though - breathable fabrics...not skin tight...not "gangsta" baggy... - Knee and elbow pads? not a bad idea...re enforced elbows and knees on pants...not bad either - Cargo pockets hold extra stuff - ABU's, DCU's, BDU's, ACU's MARPAT, Flight suits...the military uses them. they work. think about it... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. The liklihood of running into a few scared-to-shit survivors armed to the teeth or just a bunch of bloodthirsty criminals taking advantage of the appocalypse is actually high enough to warrant at least having some good-ass body armor ready. After all, as human beings we tend to be super afraid and paranoid in a time of chaos.

I agree with your list whole heartedly. As for body amour I agree with your assessment that you only need to worry about it when called for. It all really depends on where you are and your current situation.. ie: if I was stuck in a high crime area when the zeds rise it is more warranted then if I was on my grandmothers ranch in central Texas don’t get me wrong I have a IBA in my closet just in case but I am not overly concerned about constantly wearing it. at first perhaps, however once I got to my fall back spot I would keep it easily accessible but not wear it constantly. Besides with the way the economy is today there are better things to invest in then such a specialized item

I'd wear my IBA around here if that happened just for the fact that if I had to leave my Apartment I don't want a2-4 man group to be able to kill me easily. Once I find a place a little more secure it will sit with the Ammo Depot in my place. Do you find this valuable? |

Also, Chuck Norris would come in handy..."God heard that you were supposed to fight Chuck Norris and so He sent the angel of death to kill you before hand, because HE is so merciful. It was better to die by the hand of God than by the foot of Chuck Norris. AMEN!" Do you find this valuable? |

"Also, Chuck Norris would come in handy...Not to mention body armor can still be defeated or somebody can just shoot you in a place that your not covered. Groin/head and neck, and through the arm pit if you get an opportunity for that shot. If you can afford it buy it, however Jof is right. There are many other things you can buy with the amount your going to spend on a rig with the SAPI's to go with it. Do you find this valuable? |

With respect to body armor, flight suits, steel-toed shoes, pads, boots and gloves, the only scenario I can imagine that is both feasible and defensible is that of a last stand. Nobody will live like that all the time after the SHTF, and you would have to to be prepared for when 'they' come. Ask any soldier, nobody can by on hot standby indefinitely. Just not sustainable, in war or in peace.Only in groups is this possible, with the current watch deployed in full gear only. So unless you already have your group of hard-core survivalists, ready to assemble with their loved ones at the appointed time, it's not going to happen like this. I could only wish for neighbors and friends who were like-minded in sufficient numbers to legitimize such an expectation. Kudos to those who do! If the scenario is trying to escape a city after-the-fact, then living in the city in the first place was the first mistake. If the scenario is protecting an urban site, then teams are required. You have to sleep sometime, and without a team, you're either dead or waiting to die of hunger since the bandidos have stolen your food. Do you find this valuable? |

Body Armor as in bullet proof vests can get expensive and hard to find.If you want SOME protection, you can go for a flak vest. It's not bullet proof, but it is "resistant" to and reduces the damage from bullets and shrapnel. It'll stop stuff like .22LR or shotgun pellets and low velocity stuff. German Army surplus vests run about $50 and won't break you. These vests are usually dated in the late 1980's or early 90's If you want to improvise with it, you can add trama plates to it to improve the vest's toughness and give you some better protection. It'll take some crafting of pockets to hold the plate in place, but it's doable. Do you find this valuable? |

"Or you could duct tape the trauma plates on :D. That stuff always comes in handy, just never when i have it."actually, I tried the "duct tape" route. It doesn't hold to the fabric after it's rubbed or gets hot. Once the tape loosens, the plate just drops to the bottom of the vest. A simple fabric pocket sewn to the top and bottom of the front of the vest panel works. Try not to sew in the middle of the vest panel as this weakens the fabric. So they have to be secured with something else in a pocket to keep them in place. Since they are really your only serious protection from bullets if you use a flak vest, you want them in the right spot. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
