Sit there, listen to music in a dark room, get all depressed, think of a premise, and start from there.

"It will be called The Apocolypse and I was wondering how do you think it should start? Give me any Ideas and I will pick the best one at the end of the day!"I start with an outline, I pick the titles of each chapter as well as any subheadings then write each chapter but you must remember that chapters and subheadings must flow so when I am halfway through with chapter one I am beginning to introduce parts of chapter two and so on. The first page is the hardest and takes the longest to write. If you plan to write an introduction or prologue write that last it will be much easier. I have written only non-fiction (two books-both about the history, implications, interpretations, and limits of the First Amendment) it may be and probably is different for fiction I would think you have far more room to be creative than I do. Once you write it, you need an editor who will rip it apart and send it back to you covered in red ink. In my case I follow her suggestions in areas of grammar and syntax but never in the actual information that should be included in and removed from the book; remember if you are writing the book you are the expert don’t let an editor convince you otherwise. The hard part is finding a publisher be prepared for disappointment. Don’t expect to get rich, two books and the royalties from a co-authored textbook paid off my graduate and post graduate student loans they were low-mid six figures but didn’t make me wealthy, and don’t get discouraged. I don’t want to make it sound bad it was enough fun that I am doing research for a third right now. Good luck. Do you find this valuable? |
