Summer Survival Issue 7
Jun 27 2009, 6:21 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 27 2009, 6:21 PM EDT
During summer there is nothing more important than hydration. You all know this, and so do raiders. So what are your plans to avoid being raided? If you are raided how can you protect your valuable stash of hydrating liquids ? Keep in mind raiders will be armed and will stop at little to nothing to get what they came for.

I'm not worried about hydration, I can leave a few buckets around when it rains and boil the water with any of the surrounding wood.

I'd be much more worried if I was in a drier state. Also, I'm going to be much more worried about somebody seeing either of the two handguns on my person in very obvious holsters, or the rifle slung over my shoulder. Somebody in a bush with any firearm can shoot me before I see them, so I'll have to be careful.

This is a very good thread, and I'm interested to see other's responses.

My QSZ (Quarantines Survival Zone) will be somewhere familiar to me (dont wish to disclosse at this point) and that area has 4 underground wells through which I get water. Prime location, secluded, no way for raiders to get to it and even if there were, its on a flat surface area with an elevated position which is ideal for combat.

well, i would padlock them, but then again they could just shoot the lock off or bash it with a melee weapon.(still helps)

well, take hifts in guarding it. these guards should have good melee weapons as the bandits will have to get close if they want some.

if the bandits beat you & intend on keeping you as slavess, you mayaswell spoil the supplies. better no one than not you.

well, you might not be in the woods, or you could have an axe as an oppose to a rifle.

Live on a river or other year round water source. Why attack someone for something you can get risk free? 7  out of 7 found this valuable. Do you?

you say that, but could you actually kill them? what if they put up the pressure first?

what if they are better armed than you?

what if there are more of them than you?

easier said than done.

If I have excess bottles I would use them to bury or hide some water.

Recycle: the big gatorade and apple juice bottles are pretty strong and should last a while.
(Most of the 1 gallon water jugs crack/bust easily because they are so thin. I've already had one that I brought home and one week later decided to start leaking through a tiny crack.)

Little kid overconfidence. I'm going to say that more often, as an acronym. LKO.

Negotiate first. My BOL will have 2 wells that can produce enough water for the crops, everyone there and some to spare. I would have no qualms about giving water to anyone who asks for it. Same with the food. There will usually be a little to spare.

But if they try to take more than can be spared, then I think that it would need to be defended. From the elevated positions behind the thick walls, a smaller group could hold off a larger one for a time. If the BOL had to be abandoned, then the contingency plan could sustain us for a short time.

The location that I think will be the my main base is less than 30 yards from a large river, and 100 yards from a medium size lake.

There should be no problem with my back hoe to trench out a down slopping trench to put a pipe to deliver a constant and permanent water source.

Raiders here in Michigan (U.S.A.) will not be in need of water it is abundant every were.

Hide my well head underground and let them have all my water while begging them to have mercy on me and leave us at least one bottle. Telling them in a most pitiful voice how far we had to walk to find water.

I might even keep poisoned water just for occasions like this. There is a concentrated liquid insecticide that would do the trick that I have access to. A little dab would do some serious intestinal damage. They'd pretty much shit themselves to death.

However that could seriously backfire if they asked you to take a drink first. The most dangerous raider is a paranoid raider.

What you want is a poison with an antidote, so that you can drink it first, "prove" it's safe, and then take the antidote first chance you get.

Photocopier fluid would be good. You can even claim its iodine to purify the water. And the antidote is vodka :)
