Zombies would not be able to swim, just 'float'
Jun 27 2009, 11:55 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 2 2009, 2:21 AM EDT
Zombies would be able to swim due to the bacteria that cause them to decompose. The bacteria release gasses that causes them to bloat, and thus creating what is basically a giant water wing. However they probably could not swim due to the lack of coordination they have. When you think about all the humans that have difficulty swimming, assuming that a zed that has very limited coordination to be able to swim sounds completely insane. Of course that is just a theory, as i do not know exactly how coordinated they are until i see one. But i am just going off of what information i have about zombies so far. So who knows really, everything we thought we knew about them could be wrong. Hell, they may even have some intelligence, how would we know yet? Until they exist everything we have is based on theory and assumptions. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

"Zombies would be able to swim due to the bacteria that cause them to decompose. The bacteria release gasses that causes them to bloat, and thus creating what is basically a giant water wing. However, that probably wouldnt happen unless you are really close to the shore, otherwise the zombies would have no reason to jump in the water in the first place. so yea you would be pretty safe out there as long as you dont run outta supplies"
That's not swimming that's floating, and a seriously doubt that they would have much control over where they float. hehe... think about it. riding around in a boat with your favorite melee weapon boinking zombies in the head as you speed by! haha!

even if they start to bloat i think that the gasses would escape because they by the time they would get that big their skin would rip because it would be all dried up and from the sheer amount it would take for them to float 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Even individual body parts can bloat and float, the gasses also form in the deep tissues. Most would form in and around the internal organs, so would not depend on the skin holding them in the body.

1. Shamblers
even if they could float (which I doubt, we can only float because we're mostly water, where as they would dry out quickly) they couldn't swim with serious direction or speed
2. Rage Zombies
different story-as basically angry people, these could come at you, assuming the distance is not too great to cross

"How do you know the characteristics of something that doesn't exist yet?"
He means that the bodies' reaction in general is that gasses form into body tissue, which can create bouyancy in a corpse. Technically, unless the virus causes some drastic shift that overcomes this, the corpses will float.

they wouldnt be on the top of the water. they'd probably float at different intervals under the water, or be walking down on the rivrbed/ocean floor.
That would still be dangerous though, you wouldnt want to swim

If you want to know if zombies would float, when Z-day comes preform a "This is Sparta!" kick on a zed on the edge of a pier, or something similar. See if it floats. Do you find this valuable?

sure, but for planning purposes that is a major problem. I'd rather build my island home AFTER I know the zombies can't swim, thanks. Do you find this valuable?

13. Changed my mind about zombies being able to swim...

I recently realized that even though zombies could 'float' they couldn't swim due to their lack of coordination. Some humans can't even swim, and their coordination is obviously greater than that of a zed. Do you find this valuable?
