Pack Animals

Since the dawn of time man has used beasts of burden to carry his loads. If your going to bug out on foot wouldn't it be nice if you had a pack animal to carry some of the load? I've realized most people shoot down the idea of using horses for transportation simply because they don't know how to ride. I believe anyone could learn to lead a horse, donkey, or mule in no time. A mule would be your best choice simply because they are the alpha load bearing animal. Roman foot soldiers used them to great effect. They even make backpacks for dogs that one of the large breeds could shoulder with no problem. They also (I shit you not) make packs for goats. Latch on to a nanny and kid and you got a portable drink fountain and some meat if things get rough. Its not for everyone I know but its something to think about if your not going to use vehicles. Would you waste more energy packing 50lbs. on your back or leading an animal at the end of a rope with 4 times that amount (in the case of a horse, donkey or mule) on his back that could be used for food if things got rough? Imagine packing 4 times the gear your packing in your BOB now. You could add some more firearms to your list as well. They would be handy for dragging big game back to camp as well as firewood. 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

You make a good point as long as you consider:1) It needs food and water 2) You must make sure it doesn't wander off or get eaten by the undead 3) Animals do make noise 4) Your speed is only as fast as the animal can move Do you find this valuable? |

"You make a good point as long as you consider:1) They can drink out of a dirty mud hole, can you? Grazing animals can pretty much survive anywhere. 2) Hobbles or a rope would take care of that. 3) True. They also have better senses and could forewarn you to an attack. 4) I can't think of an equine that I can outrun even with a two-hundred pound pack on its back. Do you find this valuable? |

i agree with timberrattler 100% im definatly pro-horse on z-day...for some reason i can never fully understand why people think horses are going to consume so much...all they do is when there not walking they eat some grass..and they dont sleep like humans either...being a prey animal they've adapted they sleep generally 20 minutes or so standing up when they stop and all they need is a couple of hours laying down for REM sleep...and horses being prey animals have also made them more sensitive to predators(zombie)

This would be a kick ass thing to have, even though its in early stages of development and you have to know how to maintain it, it would still be a great thing to have. No worries about it becoming infected if animals can. It can hold up to 340 lbs of equipment, and moves just as gracefully as any pack animal. http://www.bostondynamics.com/robot_bigdog.html Pretty cool i think. Do you find this valuable? |

It's a little bit loud and a whole lot creepy, but still completely fantastic. It looks so alive, I had trouble believing it wasn't a hoax at first. Do you find this valuable? |

Ya i first saw it on the discovery channel yesturday. It is louder than would be acceptable in a zed enviroment, but as mentioned it is early stages of development, they will probably quiet it down in the near future. But it is pretty cool how well it moves and such.

"Since the dawn of time man has used beasts of burden to carry his loads.any one can ride a horse...i teach 5&6 year olds to ride on an 870lb leprizzaner but I've seen a 3 year old riding a mini pony on many many occasions on a different note of pack animals, horses that you find may not be liking a pack put on them, being a horse trainer, I had to learn how to load a horse up, some of them really really dont like it. just a side note. "i agree with timberrattler 100% im definatly pro-horse on z-day...for some reason i can never fully understand why people think horses are going to consume so much..."we feed our horses (standard size) (3 horses all between 600-900-pounds) about 100 pounds of food every week on top of them being in pasture all day, But...a friend of mine has a draft horse whose breed I cant remember but its 18 hands (high/like 6ft 8 at the sholders) and 3 feet wide shoulders. That thing eats 100 pounds of food by itself every week Do you find this valuable? |

Thats true to, horses are a living, sentient lifeform, they decide just as humans do as to what they like and dislike. My grandpa used to have and train horses, and they really can be stubborn sometimes.

Some links to pack horse supplies.http://www.custompackrigging.com/sitemap.aspx http://www.packsaddleshop.com/ http://www.outfitterssupply.com/ Just FYI A horse can safely carry 20% of his body weight in pack items. So a 1200lb. horse can carry 240lbs. Thats four times the weight of your average BOB. Add a gun scabard and you can carry that extra long gun you've been stressing about leaving behind. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
