Hi,

You can download Google Sketchup form this link here:

http://sketchup.google.com/download.html

It isn't difficult to use once you get the basics sorted.

Hope that helped,
Marsden

Thats a pretty cool design you have there. Will have to try out something myself, however mine is based off of a much larger location. Do you find this valuable?

Reaper, if you want a hand, let me know. I have climbed the learning curve on Sketchup. It requires a lot of trial and error, and possibly a 4am epiphany. Do you find this valuable?

It is mainly 4am trial and error. I did a full spaceship, including interior levels and the engines and everything. My first project. I think a fortress will be #2. Do you find this valuable?

Holy crap, Stryker. That's impressive.

I've conquered and been conquered by SketchUp more times than I'd care to list. I've had many 4AM epiphanies, only to have them crushed before my weary eyes. Too many a project --un-saved, and yet soaked in the blood, sweat and tears of my hard labor-- Have I seen sponateously fail due to an unforseen, unforseeable consequence of my hours-old actions.

God be with you, Reaper. . . God be with you. . .

My best advice to Reaper is to go buy several large cans of Red Bull, some Red Hot Cheetos, and a few packs of cigarettes.

(If you don't smoke yet, you will by the time you're done using SketchUp, the Red Bull will enable you to remain awake to receive your 4am epiphany, and the Cheetos do nothing but make it painful to take a 10-200 the next morning)

How very well DARE you suggest that this innocent soul take up smoking?!?

The Red Bull and the Cheetos, though, are a very good plan. The Cheetos also make it so that you're more willing to sit at the computer despite your urgent needs. The more computer time you spend, the better; you never know when this semi-mythical epiphany will come to you. It may or may not actually occur at 4AM.

You guys are making this promising, nothing like trying to scare a person in the wrong direction, :)...

Pedro - Will probably take you up on that and if i have time, maybe get some pointers here within the next few weeks.

Drewblet - Thanks for the confidence, however i dont think even god could help if it is half as "fun" as you all are claiming.

Stryker - Not a smoker, hopefully wont turn into one. The energy drinks and cheetos work though.

Its deffinetly something i want to try out, however i will need to make time for but will hopefully start within the next week here. But i do agree, the model is very nice, and hopefully i will have one up here that is half as decent, i was never one for the model generating programs, never really had time to get into them like others in my family.

Reaper, don't worry. Once you've got the hang of it, it actually will be quite fun.

Just give it a week or two of practice; you'll have it down by then.

Awesome, awesome, i deffinetly want to get into it. I tried a little when i was younger with some now ancient 3D model program because i wanted to be an architect when i was like 10, but that little ideal went away and so did my attempts at modeling, so now its time again.

Yeah, at 10 I got my first ancient 3D animation program, too. What's perhaps needless to say, I failed. I did manage to build a popcorn cart, though.

I almost got my hands on full, legal copy of Maya (which is what Pixar uses), but the guy who had it fucking sold it, stating that they weren't really using it enough. I'd have bought it from him in a heartbeat at the $50 price he was asking! Especially considering the fact that it usually costs $4,995.

By the way, if you have 2.56 Gb free space on your hard drive and a decent internet speed, here's a torrent for one of the most recent Mayas:
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4439603/Autodesk_Maya_Unlimited_2009_ISO

If you can, then download that. It's the ultimate friggin' 3D animator, and one helluva 3D drafter.

Here's an example of something extremely easy:

If that's simple, imagine what else could be done.

That is true, although I found it incredibly frustrating in the beginning, because I didn't understand how it was arriving at the shapes it was making. "Do this, do that, do this, and...what the FUCK IS THAT PIECE OF SHIT GODDAMMIT!!"

Yeah, you will say that a lot. I really wanted to like it, because I saw all the cool stuff people were making. But I found the learning curve such a bitch that I uninstalled it twice. Only after a month of struggling did it come together.

Tough it out, and it's really cool. But if you want any help getting over that hump, just yell.

Not bad considering you hadn't touched it before. Textures, transparancies, and even a ramp. Nice. I started out just stacking boxes in it, seeing how I could get them to interact.

It's the curved surfaces that frustrate me. That and the Follow Me feature. Plus in the tutorial video where they show you how to make a chair, there is this one function where it creates objects on a curve for you. Big gear change. "So you make a box, then turn it into a leg. Easy. Now take your mystic voodoo bag, sacrifice your chicken, and POW! Spindles on the back of the rocking chair"

Ok, i made a better desiggned fort, revised my old one to create this better one. Not one i actually plan to build unless my company really starts to boom, then might proceed sometime in the future as somewhat of a corporate building. Anyways a fun design, please take a look and let me know what you think.

Pedro - Ya i was thinking of starting out slow, then decided to just jump on in, luckily it seems to work. I obviously have more to learn, like how to make angled structures or slanted roofs, but i will get there eventually.
