My Survival Guide

Initially, i believe (and may be wrong) that any zombie or likewise undead invasion would take several days or even weeks to reach my town. Walking or running, day and night, it would take several days for zombies to travel far enough for them to reach me. I'm under the assumption here that they started in New York City, which is a likely and one of the worst case possibilities. Its a 2-3 day run at least. Hopefully I will have been informed by the end of day one, in addition that they will not be taking a direct route to me, I should have 3 days top to prepare. Naturally everyone will be headed for weapons stores and shopping centers. I will head to a gas station with a convienience store attached, which will be less crowded. I lack a BOB, so i'll be winging it on the fly. Soup and long lasting foods will be good (MREs especially, of which i always have a few handy). The nearest ammo store is a few miles away, about a ten to fifteen minute drive. Once informed, thats the first place i'll head. Buy lots of ammo for my weapons:.45 handgun x1 9mm hangun x1 .22(not much use, but cheap bullets) handgun x2 rifle x 1 5.56 rifle x1 30-30, 30-06, 12 gauge rifles x1 ea Then, i'll head for food. Food and water aren't as important as ammo and fortifications, as weapons and gear aren't found naturally. All guesses on Zombies are just that, guesses. The Zombie Survival Guide is not necesarily right. Zombies MAY be edible, so these should not be discarded as of no use. Additionally, bones and organs can be used as tools and fire-flesh. Primitive is ok. spears and swords can be used as barriers to stab approaching zombies. My plan is for me and two to three friends to be holed up in a basement with plenty of ammo, and a generator used solely for UV lights to grow food. Water can be obtained naturally by rain or water bodies, which are abundant in the northeast where i live. 1 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

Food and water aren't as important as ammunition.Seriously? Let me get this straight. You want ammunition for nine firearms, and you think you'll become some Bear Grylls Survivor Man expert? They have trouble surviving without proper food and water for a week, and yet you somehow will get a generator, UV lights, Soil, and you think swords and spears will be of use, other than cultivating crops? Also, I would advise against chopping up infected specimens and eating them or using them as tools. You can't chop up an AIDS patient, or even a Flu patient and be absolutely sure you can't be infected from that. "Winging it on the fly" is what will get you killed. Preparedness is a thousand times better, and it's actually reliable. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

You can't plan on having days. If the infection is slow to develop once in the body, or even if one of the first infected people catches a flight your way they could be knocking on your door any time.

There are always possibilities One of which is that if you have heard of the zombies coming then maybe the owner of the gun store has too. Just maybe he will lock up shop and keep it all for himself and be willing to shoot anyone who tries to take it.Water is always important. Try going just two days without anything to drink. Holding up in a basement is like sealing yourself up in your coffin. I believe most generators are rather loud and run on fuel. They must be vented to the outside. You plan to grow food in a basement? What kind? Do you know how long it takes for each type of plant to mature from seed? Do you know what temp is needed to sprout different kinds of seed? 4 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

At the very least, get some water. Unless you want to die in the middle of you fortifying, of course.Get water first, and then food, and then ammunition, and then fortificational supplies. That's what I beleive the hirarchy should be, anyway. And how do you intend to test the edibility of zombies? How will you escape the basement if the house above becomes overrun or should be set on fire by a maniac? How will the fumes of your generator escape the basement? What will you do with your and your friends' waste? What will you do for entertainment? What if there's a flood or something like that in your area, drowning you in the basement? What if the military decides to "disinfect" your area? You wouldn't be able to escape. If you fired a gun enough times in most basements without earmuffs, you'd go deaf. I don't mean to be critical, but there are a lot of problems with your plan. Stick around for a while, and then see about revising it. Okay? 4 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Testing the edilbility of zombies: feed one to my little brother.Acquiring supplies(UV, Generator) At first there will be a scramble for equipment, but after a few months there will be no one left to use them and i will take a raider/looter approach. Order of importance of supplies: Guns and ammo are going to be important in surviving longer than the initial waves. Food and water are going to be important, but if you cant make it home from the supermarket, whats the use? A few cases of water and cans of food and presto: enough until i can find a new source or dig a well. You cant rely on canned goods forever. My friends basement is about 100 ft from a resevior for fish and water when not under attck and has a solid concrete basement with two windows and one relatively solid door. Melee weapons embedded in your defenses should keep both zombies and pyromaniacs away:) And for the time frames: I dont know many people from random places that come and visit every few days. At most, one visit from an out of towner per month. There is a slim likelyhood that GZ could be closer, albiet a much higher probability from farther away. 1 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

" "Winging it on the fly" is what will get you killed. Preparedness is a thousand times better, and it's actually reliable. "Everything you know could be mistaken. No offense, but you have no clue what you're preparing for. Zombies can be: Fast/slow moving hard/soft targets they might not even die from a headshot! Guns may be useless, but it cant hurt to have weapons even to fight off raiders and looters and maniacs. they could be fireproof, bulletproof, fast moving, and have the strength of the strongest man onearth, the intelligence of the smartest. Or they could die easily, moe slowly, be dumb and be weak. Its all assumptions, so no, it is not as reliable as you make it out to be. 1 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

I said it's better to have food and water, than firearms. You immediately think I'm preparing for Zombies. I'm preparing food, and water, so that while you're out looking for fights like a super hero movie star, I'll be safe with months of water and food. Im not looking for fights, I'm engaging when neccesary. Im not stupid, I get what you're saying. I can go out and hunt while you deplete your food supplies because i have the gear to defend myself for the time. Better to have a reproducing but not stockpiled supply of deer than 200 cans of food, even if it means risking going outside into the cold, dark, misty, mysterious, zombie-infested woods.EDIT: The survivor man guys you are talking about are attempting to live in harsh climates. I have readily availible water about 200 ft away from my house, a well, tap water, and plenty of delicious squirrels and rabbits to hunt and eat. 1 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

So you would feed the body of a zombie to your little brother to see if it made him sick or killed him?I'm beginning to see why Devilnuts doesn't like children. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"So you would feed the body of a zombie to your little brother to see if it made him sick or killed him?Oh comeon, it's not all children that are bad. Just the ones who think they're Special Air Service or Rangers, and happen to act like they know everything. Usually though, asking for suggestions and getting defensive isn't proper etiquette. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Exactly;) He's a whiner, and also is fairly useless with a gun, even though hes 14 he shoots like crap. Tell him its cicken, he'll eat it. Not smart enough to figure out how i got a chicken anyways. I never did really liked him...EDIT: Asking for suggestions mean suggesting, not saying that nothing i said works. SAS and US army suck. Rangers are only marginally better. "My friends basement is about 100 ft from a resevior for fish and water when not under attck and has a solid concrete basement with two windows and one relatively solid door. Melee weapons embedded in your defenses should keep both zombies and pyromaniacs away:) "You are aware that your plans, in which you place so much stalk, are completely pointless if any of what you crtisized Adician for not planning for should turn out to be true? And preparedness is FAR more reliable in virtually any situation than "winging it on the fly" would ever be. To the quoted text: It's good that it's so close to a resevior of fish, but consider that it's a solid concrete basement with one door. A pyromaniac can still toss a Molotov onto a building, even if this building has spears sticking out of it. And what about the human waste, the generator fumes (the windows pobably wouldn't suffice), the entertainment, the the possibility of a natural disaster and governmental coutnermeasures? You never addressed those issues. Hellsniper, why not PREPARE, and if your preparations don't work out, you rely on your skill and on chance? Did you consider that? Why is it that you asked for advice, and are defending against any that's given? 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

I did think about that, but i feel its better to die fighting then starve to death slowly by running out of food. Painful. I mean, if that is true, arent we going to die anyways? Where will you find your opening for your molotov to do damage? on top wont do anything, and a door and three windows boarded up should be no problem for a molotov. The door is metal and the windows wouldn't break from a glass bottle. Besides, we could use the restrooms outside, dig a pit, ect. It is a multi-room basement, with empty door slots connecting the two rooms and a small storage cabinet. Everyone here is assuming that no ordinary person without preparation could survive. Post your guides here and i could come up with many problems. Hell, this is all theory. EDIT: And these things all are currently there without improvements. Improving could do a hell of a lot.

I agree with your trying to help. Im not mad or angry or defensive, just pointing out my counterarguments. Theres only so much i can write. No one knows my exact situation. Life doesnt have to be diehard, some people just would rather die fighting. No offense, but i couldn't hide in a building for 2 weeks (thats actually what i'm doing now, i'm at two days and soo bored i was designed a new game: uber ultimate frisbee...Ultimate frisbee with a bladed frisbee and full contact) without doing something, let alone several years. EDIT: I know how to edit, in addition to not being stupid, i also am not blind. I appreciate your support, but just like explaining my course of action. 1 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Better to have a reproducing but not stockpiled supply of deer than 200 cans of food, even if it means risking going outside into the cold, dark, misty, mysterious, zombie-infested woods."200 cans of food beat all the deer in the brush. I will settle for guaranteed chicken noodle soup and minestrone than go wander around like Davy Crockett in the darkness after deer already spooked by Zedskies and gunshots from Survivors. My suggestion to you is the following [others have stated this as well, but it needs to be re-iterated]: Stock up on food, water, personal hygeine products and other essentials. You can't eat, drink or bathe with bullets, hombre. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I did think about that, but i feel its better to die fighting then starve to death slowly by running out of food. Painful. I mean, if that is true, arent we going to die anyways?Hellsniper, if you prepare properly, you won't starve to death. If we would all die to death, why use such statements against Adician? I would throw my Molotov upstairs. Saying that it would do nothing from up there is like saying a fire in a penthouse wouldn't affect the fourth floor. IT WOULD, if nobody dealt with it. And I could shoot or throw a rock at the windows. What if it's completely overrun outside? We aren't assuming that a normal person couldn't survive, we're saying that one who doesn't behave rationally wouldn't survive. If live doesn't have to be diehard, why behave like it is? And if you couldn't hide for two weeks, you're in huge trouble. And I'm not trying to be critical. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |
