I would like to add: in the previous and only Civil War, the urban North population was unscathed whereas the rural South population was for the most part completely 'in the fight' (war effort and war itself). I believe that the converse would be true if another civil war were to occur again: the urban pop would experience the brunt of the fighting and suffering while the rural pop would be on the lesser of the scale.
Reasoning: the massive infrastructure allowing goods and services to rapidly transit across state lines and intrastate traffic allows the urban areas to be more completely dependant upon outside support in contrast to cities during the 1800s. Curtail that flow for an extended period of time (a month) and you will have chaos on a scale not seen to date.

"Lets try to expand upon that and use some of the members on the site. For those of you that live in big cities like LA, New York, Boston etc how long could you last if your city were sealed. Nothing got in, and getting out was a witch. How much food do you have stockpiled, water , ammo, etc? "

"Well I would give it about two weeks Mr. Reaper and then those places are up the creek. When the lights are turned off and there is no water, people are going to exhaust what the stores have in a few days if that. Given the fact that most of the city dwellers do not stock up on the basics as rural folks do, there would be mass panic and looting. Not to mention most cities are pretty strict when it comes to the 2nd Amendment, so it will be pretty nasty stuff indeed. If it happened in the summer it would be chaos, in the winter well that would be population control in the extreme."

Katrina was taken and compared to the last 10 ice storms in the three northern New England states-It took 10 events to equal the actual cost and number dead had to be weighted to make it even. Looting, violent crime, homicide, and rape were the dependent variables the storms independent variables. The time to return to functionality was defined as return of electricity, running water, and food to 80% of the affected area in sq miles. The results showed a 10x increase in violent crime when you compare those affected by Katrina to the 10 storms in northern New England. Again, the 10 storms in New England equaled financial cost of the damage but the death toll was weighted to make them equal. Some study held true for firearms deaths and a whole bunch of non-PC type of studies. Places may end but the majority of the nation will survive a natural disaster if the people work together."
