Scrounging Scenario
Aug 18 2009, 10:09 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 18 2009, 10:11 PM EDT
Here's a scrounger's challenge.....

You find a farm house and scrounge everything you can find to the living room floor. You are solo, so you can only take what you can carry. You have no backpack and only a burlap bag to carry your goodies in.

For this exercise, you can only pick 5 ITEMS TO TAKE WITH YOU - and tell why.

Here's the list...

.38sp RG revolver (5 shot)
.30-30 Marlin 336 Lever Action (6 shot magazine)
.22LR Marlin Model 39 Lever Action Rifle (19 shot)
9mm S&W Model 39 pistol (8 shot clip)
12g Belgium made Double Barrel shotgun with Damascus barrels
12g Western Auto Revelation Brand Pump Shotgun (5 shot)
Combat Boots - your size!
Ammo: 12g (#6 shot game loads) - 25 rounds
Ammo: .38sp - 50 rounds
Ammo: 12g Blackpowder shells (#8 shot) - 50 rounds
Ammo: .30-30 - 20 rounds
Ammo: .22LR - 200 rounds
Ammo: 9mm - 50 rounds
Ammo: 7.65 Long - 50 rounds
Ammo: .30-06 - 20 rounds
.22LR Ruger Single Six Revolver (6 shot)
French Model 1935-A pistol (8 shot clip) with extra clip
1 Case MRE's
4 gallons of water (distilled)
1 bottle Charcoal Lighter fuel
1 Sleeping Bag
2-man Pup Tent
8 Mason jars of Green Beans
4 Mason jars of "Moonshine"
.30-06 Ruger M77 Bolt Action Rifle with 3x9x40mm Scope
First Aid kit (standard industrial size)
1 bottle of Antibiotics
Cavalry Sabre
Ammo: .44 sp - 50 rounds.
Meat Cleaver
6volt Flashlight
Guitar, Acoustic
Socket Set (89 pc set) in case
5 gallon can of Gasoline
10' x 10' Plastic Tarp
Zippo Lighter
Puppy - Mutt about 8 weeks old
Axe
Shovel
Pipe and Tobacco
12 cans of Soup
6 cans of Tuna
4 rolls of Toilet Paper
.44mag Thompson Contender Single Shot Pistol
Army Field Jacket
1 bottle of Wine

Let the fun begin!

12g Western Auto Revelation Brand Pump Shotgun (5 shot)
Combat Boots - your size!
Ammo: 12g (#6 shot game loads) - 25 rounds
1 Case MRE's
Axe

This covers some of my essentials, the shotgun is simple and reliable. Ammo to feed it, MRE's to feed me. Boots for my feet (assuming I didn't have shoes before per your scenario). Finally the axe, a blade is useful beyond all measure.

1.a. Assuming no boots - BOOTS! (conveniently in my size lol)
1.b. Assuming boots, it'd be a toss up between the flashlight or the first aid kit.
2. 4 x gallons water
3. 1 x case MRE
4. Sleeping Bag (no one ever said I had to sleep in it zipped up)
5. Cavalry Sabre (I'm a sheltered Australian, I've never touched a firearm in my life so wouldn't have the first idea about how to keep it from going fubar. However I am a fencer and do historical fighting so a sabre I could actually use)

Tks for the scenario, I'm interested to see what others choose

trick scenario (I can carry more than 5 off this list)!!
assuming I have nothing (just fell off the truck)
12 ga pump
25 #6 shells w/5 now in gun
shovel (seems like only I know what a weapon this can be a la Spetnaz)
MRE
water
Then again, with all this stuff, why leave? Stick around until the food and water run out! :-D

In this order:
1) Water
2) MRE's
3) Antibiotics
4) 1st aid kit
5 ) Dogmeat (the pup)

Being that I am me, and that I will already have my Elysia, Glock, Para, flashlights, knives, and some other stuff. The last one was a little hard to pick. I would hate to leave a pup behind, and the Sleeping bag was really tempting.

1) 4 gal. water
2) Zippo Lighter
3) 1 bottle Antibiotics
4) Double Barrel Shotgun
5) #8 Shot Shells - 50

1) Water is life. 2) I can't start a fire with sticks. 3) Most first aid kits are band-aids and neosporin. I'll take the antibiotics, I don't know when I'd run into something that valuable again. 4) These aren't my firearms. I'll stick with something almost gauranteed to work. You can't hardly fuck up a double barrel. A .22 is always toted as the do all small game getter. Not for me, if I'm faced with starvation I'm choosing a shotgun everytime. 5) This looks like a dimbulb pick but #8 shot will take down a squirel or rabbit as well as pigeons, doves and quail. I like the sound of 50 better than 25. 12ga. is a popular sized shell hopefully I'll find some slugs or buckshot somewhere down the road.

Love your little experiment ironhand!

Well lets say I found this gold mine, and all I have is what I normally carry on my person. I will have my tanto folding pocket knife, a lighter, the car keys and wallet. I also have the 1911 with me and another spare mag, although that will prob change to a Ruger P95 in the spring. I would then take all of this stuff and seperate it into caches and hide it/bury the items that I can not carry. Now as to what I would take with me.
1. Water will not get far without aqua.
2. MRE's more bang for the buck and a sh*t load of calories, not to mention you get TP, matches, coffee and all those little goodies with it.
3. 30-30 Marlin Rifle. I will need a long gun, and though I can not carry a whole box of shells I can at least pocket 6 rounds and load it with another 6 before I go. 12 out of 20 rounds is not to bad, esp with a .45 to back it up.
4. Sleeping bag, I can already feel the chill of fall at nights and in the morning when I wake up to hit the gym, which means that a restless night of freezing my ass off would not do me any good. Why waste energy freezing to death, when I can snuggle up in a nice warm bag. Besides fires at night might not be a great option, maybe warm but it is also a dead give away.
5. The Tarp, can collect water with it, use it to keep dry, store items etc etc. It would be a very useful item to have with.

The rest I would just go back for later, when I found a vehicle to haul most of it.

.22LR Ruger Single Six Revolver (6 shot)-I have a .38sp already mine holds 6 but I would take the .22 if I didnt have anything since more ammo is readily available
Ammo: .22LR - 200 rounds-Pistol is useless without ammo and I dont want to have to run up and pistol whip a zombie
4 gallons of water (distilled)-I dont want to dehydrate or have a heat stroke and wait for something to come kill me
1 bottle of Antibiotics-Harder to find than a first aid kit and will help with infections
1 Case MRE's-If I'm thinking correctly there are 12 MRE's in a case, if there is less than that I'll take the soup.

Water
MREs
And the dog.

Reason: Water and food will be heavy enough, I don't need to burden myself with extra shit. And the dog doesn't need to be carried. Plus I welcome the company.

1- 12gl of water: gotta keep hydrated
2- puppy: company and zed dectector, after some training anyway
3- 12 cans of soup: im hoping its chowder of some kind, i can at least share wit the dog.
4- 9mm S&W model 39: I would want something light and easy to shoot with plenty of ammo.
5- 9mm ammo: see above

- I ALWAYS carry my own zippo lighter and multi-tool with me. Also, if the test allowed it, i would have found some rope and a knife to make the tarp into a make-shift rucksake to carry more things-

Excellent thread.

This is assuming I do not have what is usually on my person, right?

1)Axe
A knife is perhaps the most important survival tool. I'd much prefer a KABAR or purpose designed knife, but there is nothing wrong with an axe, and it is much easier to use then a meat cleaver in most situations. If necessary, I'd saw down the handle before I left. I'm also guessing you wouldn't be able to strike sparks as well with a sabre or cleaver.

2)Water.
Not only will this take me farther then any kind of food, and I will have a useful container to carry any more water when I find it.

3)Antibiotics.
Incredibly difficult to find post zed, and the hardest part of field medicine to improvise.

4) M39
5) 9mm ammunition
I know this is very unwise, but I am very much a handgun guy. I probably wouldn't go as deaf if I had to fire it either.

If I did have what I normally carry; BDU, zippo, surefire G3, folding knife, KA-BAR and most likely a 1911 (really depends).

1)Water

2)Antibiotics

3)MREs
Already mentioned, high caloric content and a few goodies included. I'd probably strip the packaging to cut down on space and waste though.

4)Lighter Fuel
Already have a zippo, be nice to get some fuel.

5) Puppy, a few cans of tuna
I'm not too good with animals, which is why I wouldn't try it when I am lacking on equipment, but with a bit of breathing room, I'd give it a try. Yeah, I'm combining tuna, but I'm pretty sure feeding it MREs would be a bad idea.

'Rattler,

Actually, you went for the "trick gun" in this list.

Damacus barreled shotguns will ONLY shoot blackpowder. If you'd taken and fired the regular smokeless ammo, it would have blown up!

Good work ; )

Combat boots- Running and hiking are essential. I've heard too many stories of people hiking without proper shoes.
.22 Lever action rifle- Low recoil, common ammo. Love lever actions!!!!
Ammo .22lr 200rds- Lightest/most abundant ammo. Can waste a few rounds hunting small game.
Puppy- Great long term. Can train as guard/hunting dog.
8 mason jars of green beans- Better for trading than MRE's. Better than canned veggies. Can be used as bait for small game.

(even if i came with all of my equipment in my survival plan, I would still take these. My # 6 would be the moonshine BTW)

I would pick the following ;

#1 ; Axe
A great tool, useful for alot of things and it works good enough to smash a head, or atleast immobilize a zombie from causing me any harm.

#2 ; 4 gallons of water
A no-brainer really, no water and you're dead.

#3 ; Combat Boots
Sturdy and made for extended use, so I wont hurt my feet from always moving around.

#4 ; 12 cans of soup
Food is necessary and it's also soup, so you wont have to use up the precious bottled water you got with you.

#5 Army Field Jacket
Staying warm will waste precious energy, and since I have not brought with me that much food it's even more important.
It's also good to wear to screen the sun from your skin, as I suppose the clothing I would have on me is jeans and a t-shirt, and walking around everywhere with that kind of clothing will just burn up my skin.
Plus you can use it as a blanket at night, which will make it easier for you to sleep and not become ill.

1) .38 sp. RG revolver (light weight, reliable, and decent power)
2) .38 sp. ammo. - 50 rounds ( need for above gun)
3) MRE's - 1case of 12 (food, matches, T.P., and other goodies)
4) 12 cans of soup (food, and cans are hard to break)
5) 4 gallons of water (waters a need)

I have to agree with others, why leave such a treasure trove?

4) 12 cans of soup, I was torn between the soup or the 8 beans. I decided against the beans because, the mason jars are easily broken. Also I didn't know if they were quart or pint jars?

I am sure I could have taken much more, after all I could have taken 1 or 2 rifles and ammo., also more pistols, and more in a pillow case.
