Lets get back on topic. My melee choice would be a 15" Bowie, sharp big yet easy to use. Other then that it would have to be a tapanga. Do you find this valuable?

Anyone can *think* of having a high paying job, but does that mean that you're better than me?

By the way, if that job is being a lawyer, I don't think you have the intellegence to be successful.

On topic, I think I would go with a 20-25" broadsword. Of course if I ever got one it would require some practice.

Your logic is flawless. I cannot argue with this. (Really?)

For melee, the ideal weapon is a shorter machete, probably about a foot and a half long. If that doesn't work, the hatchet is a good backup, but can get stuck (even in wood) and will leave you with nothing. The best backup would be several kitchen knives (sharp of course) that you don't mind losing. Do you find this valuable?

I'm not so sure. Machetes are not terribly sharp, and have little to no skull penetration power.

Hatchet I'd agree with but I feel that there are better things out there.

Kitchen knives were not designed for combat, and I am wary of using any piece of steel for anything other than its intended purpose. Some kitchen knives may perform well where as others will not fare well.

Calling any of these as an 'ideal' weapon as opposed to an acceptable or convenient weapon seems a bit of a stretch.

"and dont forget that the deadlyest end was oppisite the hammer, (go i love picks)

every one should get an entrenchment tool...they work wonders."
The pick end is the best part! The hammer is good for follow through strikes whereas the pick would be ideal for a killing stroke. The longer pole arm version would also be good for subduing, tripping, or even removing a rider (horse or bike).

That was one thing I was thinking of: a pickaxe. It has temendous force focused into one point, and can be bought quite easily. However, one problem is that you could easily miss and get thrown off balance.

A railway spike hammer would be great, a little bigger then a hammer but it has a pretty mean spike on the end. Do you find this valuable?

A one handed pick could work. They may be hard to find however.

You can find them at most hardware stores, railway stations usually have them too.

War hammers were built just like this, but for military use.

Neither are a couple of people in this thread...

Kukri for me - has enough momentum and weight for a clumsy simpleton like me, yet gets the cutting done. Although the idea of having the ranged tools means you don't use the melee tools - and hopefully I'll be using neither too often.

I love kukris for just that reason. Do you currently own one and if so what make?

"katana(short sword), an axe, a 42 caliber shotgun or the tompson submachine gun"
A 42 caliber shotgun you say? Does that fall between 16 gauge and 20 gauge? And when was the last time you fired a Thompson (note the difference) ?

Most machetes are pretty thin, I wouldn't want to trust them in combat. A recent trip to tractor supply found a "cane knife" sort of a poor mans kukri, similar shape, thick steel and 20 bucks.
Pick ax is a terrible idea, unbalanced, and if you did manage to connect the point is now lodged in a skull useless without a struggle to pull it free leaving you vulnerable to attacks from other combatants.
A "boys ax" fits nicely between unwieldy full size/tiring ax and too small to feel confident with hatchet. It may well be my choice for my personal ideal melee weapon. (but feel free to use whatever works for you)
