My short term plan
Aug 31 2009, 12:07 AM EDT | Post edited: Aug 31 2009, 12:07 AM EDT
I have a general plan for the 1st month or so of the outbreak.

Where I hunt there are several raised "hunting shacks" on the neighboring property. These are of metal construction and are quite large. I would guess 5 x 15 or larger. They are also 20 -25 feet in the air on metal poles with a single ladder.

My plan is too utilize one or more of these shacks with 3 other people. I have enough food and water for at least a month for 4 people, and should have enough room in the shacks to cram everything in and enough room for everybody to live, if rather uncomfortably. I also have various guns with 2000+ rounds of ammo in .308, ..223, .45, 9mm, and 12gauge., so I should be set for short and long range. The shack has a great 360 degree view so no one could sneak up on me, at least during the day. Woods are fairly close and would allow to hide my truck for later use. With 4 people, we should be able to set up in shifts to keep guard. Also, the hatch leading up through the floor into the shack appears to swing inward, so we could put something heavy on in to keep the undesirables out.

What I like about it is that I think very few people if any, would consider going to this place in a zombie attack. If we can get in discreetly and remain incognito, nobody should even know where there. After a month or so, we should have access to acquiring supplies without competition from the living. I also like the idea of being high off the ground to keep the surprises to a minimum and restricting access to others to only one direction.

What I don't like is the idea of having really only 1 exit out of the place. There is no where to go but down and a fall or jump from that height is crippling or death. We would also make a big target for a larger group of well armed living, should they know we are there and want our supplies.

Overall, it the best defendable position I can think of in the area.

I think you have the makings of a good survival plan. It isnt perfect, but what I really like is the fact that you understand and acknowledge the shortcomings of your plan, and you intend to find ways to work around them.

Your greatest asset is flexibility and adaptability. Welcome to ZSDW.

I'm going to save this thread in my favorites to use as evidence for when new users with bad plans complain that we're just being mean because they're new.

If you have a SOLID PLAN, that does NOT involve raiding Wal Mart for supplies, and understand that ALL plans, including yours, have shortcomings, then the members of this site are more than happy to offer constructive advice and accolades.

So, to the original poster,

1) I assume you plan to use your truck to get your supplies to the hunting shack. The only problem I can see is actually getting your stuff UP the ladder... you are going to be mighty tired humping all that gear.

2) As far as an escape route, could you use rope to evacuate through a window?

3) Tell NO ONE. Because you are right, you would be something raiders would be interested in. If all your neighbors know where you are going to be at, they may come looking for a hand out knowing you are prepared and they are not.

4) Nice Plan.

First off: welcome to the site. It's good to see that you have a basic plan in hand.

Second: It's a pretty solid plan. Of course it has holes in it, that's normal. I'm staying in the City if an outbreak occurs and I still have people telling me this is a bad plan. DN said it best a few months ago "stay where you are familiar".

Third: Ideas for what StrykerP said...

1) Use a pulley system to get stuff up to where you plan to hide. It's better than carrying everything on your back while climbing up a ladder.

2) the rope idea sounds good... even a rope bridge. For some reason the Ewok Village comes to mind.

3) Yup... keep that info secret.... Though you might be at an advantage if you set up Early Detection systems. One that I will be using in one of my plans is this:

You know those "Party Poppers" you can find during the 4th of July? You could set those about knee height & put them at choke points around your camp. Not only will this let you know if there's Raiders & such... but also if there's Game to be hunted.

4) It's a nice plan, I'm agreeing with StrykerP with that one.

More IMO:

*For the idea of Raiders- have you thought about camouflaging the shacks? Make them harder to see from afar?
*Heat or A/C- depending on where you live, you may need one or the other. Any ideas anyone?
*Storage of essential & non-essential items- you could bury them not far from each shack if you can't fit them inside.
*Weapons & Equipment- what do you think you will be carrying? I'd go for a scoped hunting rifle per shack, an "Assault Rifle", and a few Pistols or Shotguns Per Shack if you can manage the load.
*Gardening / Farming- if you find yourself there for a long period of time... these might come in handy.
*WATER- any plans for that?

Cont from above:

If you scour the area where you hunt... do you think you can find where some fruits & veggies grow? That can add to your food supply for the short term. Also: is there a river or lake near where this place is at? That's added water supply.

Somethings to add to your list:
*Medical/1st Aid bag- everything from Epi-Pens to band aids.
*Map of the Area + Map of where you think you might want to go next. Compass... if you don't know how to use them yet get started. It will help. GPS devices will work for a little bit... but it's good to know basic "Pen & Paper" orienteering.
*Radio- something hand cranked... preferably a "Ham Radio" (I'm working on the idea of getting a license for one & acquiring one that will work)
*Soap/Shampoo/Cleaning Agents- they will, I say again WILL, come in handy.
*Cooking stuffs- From Sterno burners to utensils. It will come in handy.
*Weather Gear- be it hot or cold, if this is where you are starting... you also may be stuck here for longer than you think.

That's all I can think of.

Again: Welcome to the ZSDW... our home on the net.

Hope this Helps...

This really works! I used to do it as a prank by stringing the cord across the bathroom doorway to scare the shit out of my dad when he got up to pee at 3am

I like the fact that you recognize this as a short term plan. Get a survival plan page and incorporate this into it. I'd like to see your long term plan. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks for all the input guys, great ideas.

I was hoping to write a little more of my plan, but I ran out of character space.

I still have a 30 foot portable emergency escape ladder in my possession when I used to live in an apartment. It is very portable, it comes in a box about the size of the large detergent boxes, and would come in handy for a quick descent.

There is plenty of game in the area, especially deer, pheasant, rabbit, and squirrel in case of food shortage. Plus i'm already situated perfectly in a hunting blind and would use the .308 to snipe me some venison. I would prefer to make as little noise as possible though, especially early on to avoid detection.

I agree with the rope and pulley to get up the goods. I should be able to use like a heavy duty 6 x 8 "leaf" tarp that sinches around edge, thread the rope through the grommerts and pull it up like one big santa bag.

The radio is something that I'll need to work on, especially a ham radio. I'm hoping 1-month post Z-day, there will be some organized survivors held up in a more long-term facillity and will be broadcasting for others to join. I'm still working on plan "B" should this not be a viable option.

I have a "big buddy heater" and 2 20# propane tanks that would provide heat non-stop for 20 days if needed. It has an automatic oxygen sensor and will shut off if there is too much Carbon monoxide in the area. I also have about half dozen 1# disosable tanks that would get us by for a few more days. I think a/c is probably out of the question and would probably just have to sweat it out if it's hot.

For water, there is a creek within 10 minute walking distance and a river within 15. I'm still debating on the best way to purify the water, but I think I'm going with the battery operated U/V bottle.

my short term plan? get a ton of refugees that arent infected yet.. then we raid bill gates'
manion.

i hear he has crazy security and he makes his own electricity and filters his own water.

we rape his mansion, set up ultimate super billionaire security walls and live happily ever after.

....
...
...
that is if.. we successfully raid his mansion. if we fail to raid his mansion, well... then x_X for us.

my other plan? Train hard to survive in extreme cold temperatures..
live in Tibet, live in mountains or go to Antarctica or the northpole and live there. id rather die freezing to death than to become a zombie or be eaten alive

hmm im not really well planned.. i think ill end up freezing to death because i would have procrastinated training for cold weathers.
