Hello all.. I was wondering what the ZSDW community comes up with: I am stuck in a rut andi'm looking for some ideas. Rules: I'm looking for a firearm, must be complete, no kits, no stripped recievers, nothing that fell off the back of a truck.. etc.. 500 dollar limit.. + or - 100 bucks.. no big deal.. I'm just curious to see what people come up with.. Weapons I was looking at. Handguns Sig Mosquito in desert camo has threaded front barrel. NIB. Glock.. .45/.40/ etc.. whatever .38 snub or .357 magnum. Shotguns Mossberg or remington.. etc. 870 style. Rifles Dunno.. havent found anything interesting.. Do you find this valuable? |

Mossberg Road Blocker. 10 bucks under your limit and comes with an extremely cool and extremely huge compensator that makes a hot 12GA round feel like a .410. MMMM tasty. Although it is recalled for some reason now. I should look into that. Me no likey when my gun blows half my face off because of a safety recall. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I would go with a Norinco SKS-D and pick up some 30 round AK magazines if they're legal where you live.Durable and the ammo is cheap. Do you find this valuable? |

Oh and one more thing. The highest recommended weapons on my personal list, in order: 1: Concealable Handgun (preferably with CCW permit). That way you have a weapon, and when SHTF, you can take it with you no matter what. Example: .38 Snubnose. 2: Shotgun. The diversity of ammo allows one weapon to be used for many things and is found more often than other types of ammo. Example: Mossberg 500 3: Rifle: (with scope). Allows you to stay far away from whatever you are ventilating and do so with accuracy. Example: Remington 700 4: Semi-automatic Handgun: Replaces #1, provides better rate of fire and reload speed, lets you then keep your old reliable #1 somewhere for last resort. Example: 1911 5: Assault Rifle: Best of most worlds, but it can be replaced by one or more of the above so it comes last on the list. Great for heavy fighting, not much else. Example: AR-15 This is just my list. My personal order of how important I consider my firearms. Not necessarily which ones I'd prefer to use first, but which ones I'd prefer to own first. You should create your own list based on how you feel, your tactical style, etc. I would think a small handgun should always come first. Best thing to have in your BOB. Some people might put the AR second, not the shotty. Or replace the long rifle with an AR. Whatever. Tis up to you, just figure it out. Do you find this valuable? |

Mosin-Nagant. It'll run you somethin like 200 bucks, depending on where you get it. Bolt action and civilian legal. And the cartridge is relatively common, not overly expensive.

I agree with Stryker, go with a concealable firearm first as: "the best gun in a gunfight is the one you have" a full size 1911 is great until you need it and it's sitting home on the dresser because it's too big and heavy to carry all the time. I have a Kahr P9 for concealed carry but there are smaller, lighter, cheaper guns available. Is this your first firearm? You didn't say Do you find this valuable? |

I believe that - if you are a careful shopper - you can get the following:1) A reliable 9mm or .40S&W pistol like a Taurus 24/7 2) A Mossberg 500 series tactical or home defense shotgun. You are pretty much set with these two items. Do you find this valuable? |

"One thing I dont have is an easy to conceal handgun. My carry rig is the 1911. I've looked at .38 snub for a long time now. I was thinking of getting one with a laser and the shrouded hammer but its outside of my self imposed limit. Anywho I just love the simplicity of a revolver.. And its something the wife can carry. Ah ha!. The remington 700. This is something my weapons lack.. A longer range scoped weapon. Granted, the optics will put me wayyy over the top however its not a big deal. +1 for the remington. How's about a Marlin 336C 30-30 lever action. We're talking a six round tubular magazine and a range of about 250 yrds. for under $500. I saw one for sale the other day for $350. The 30-30 cartridge has been around for well over 100yrs and is still a big seller. I know most of you folks are looking for black guns but it wouldn't hurt to check out some of the classics now and then. The first time you shuck out some brass you'll be hooked.

I think I will be contrary on this one. It sounds like you are planning for a single person, for a group I would recommend differently.Ruger 10/22, spare magazines and ammo to fill out the budget. Light, reliable, and deadly. Low noise signature, with the right ammo. And, if you keep in mind it's limitations, you will be less likely to go off the deep end. Do you find this valuable? |

On the long rifle subject, do look into Mosin Nagants. They are rather accurate and pack one helluva punch. You can mount a scope too. Actually knew a guy who had a Dragunov-style synthetic stock CNC machined to replace the wood one. Then he welded on a scope rail, mounted some massive Leupold, and now has a very bad ass sniper rifle.
