Dang, I went to their site and I saw the LCR, I wonder if that fits in
my budget?

"
The LCR is very polarizing. Some love it , other hate it.

I love the thing ... it's definitely on my buy list. Something about it just feels RIGHT in my hand, and the DA trigger pull is amazingly smooth and consistent. It's about $450 in my part of the woods.

Mosin's are nice. If you get one in good shape you could probably shoot a 2 foot plate at a 1000 yards in the wind or so I hear.

The steel butt plates have some kick though.

Are we assuming that you would be purchasing a new Mosin, or an old, but usable Mosin. This has been brought up either way several times.

I'd go for a good .357 snub-nosed revolver. No brand in particular. But remember, knives don't run out of bullets.

Actually, it's still possible to buy a "new" Mosin-Nagant. After the Second World War, the Soviets made millions of 'em and crated them up, in case of a Third World War. Their beautifully preserved, and still work great after a good cleaning

Well I wouldn't consider those "new" I'd say those are just in really good condition. They're still old. Do you find this valuable?

Thank you 3DayAsylum, that is what I meant. Though, I do suppose you could reasonably purchase an older, albeit never used Mosin & expect it to work well enough. Do you find this valuable?

"I've seen some cool 10/22's .. Its something to consider..

The add-ons for this gun seem to be endless."
10/22's are amazing guns for the price. It's what I'm still growing up on. Its got a whole bunch of accessories you can buy for it and will eat up all kinds of crap ammo. You can easily get a 50 rd magazine for around 20 bucks.

Agreed...

Apaprently there are some things too look for.

My buddy was braggin up his mosin over the phone the other day and I told him I might be
looking for one.. I guess you have to look out for the following..

- Since most of them are war era rifles and are most likely used, you have to watch for barrel warpage.

- He says the only decent ones have a certian stamp on them.. A hammer and sickle stamp with a triangle
saying its from the izamhez. (sp?) factory.

Depends. To collectors, the rifles from the Tula Arsenal are actually preferred over those from the Izhevsk Ordinance Factory.

To shooters, the best rifles are the Finnish Mosins, specifically the M28/30. They are typically the most accurate. Some rifles will have a "2" in a triangle, this typically meant that they were sub-standard in accuracy and meant for grunts, not snipers.

The LCR has a polycarbonate frame, so the balance profile is a bit different than a traditional revolver.

The LCR would be great for a fire fight in a phone booth. :)

I am looking at getting a Glock 27 which is small enough to carry concealed but still packs 9+1 in .40 which is arguably one of the best rounds for self defense, (Check this out http://www.chuckhawks.com/40SW_praise.htm)

Still not convinced? You can get a .22 conversion kit for it so you can practice with it to your hearts content and not spend a fortune on ammo.

I am not one of those Glock fanboys, but it's a great gun that fills a big hole in my armory. I was going to get an AK next, but I will opt for something easy to carry everywhere and rely on my Saiga 12 ga. and Winchester 30-30 in the mean time... unless my lottery ticket is a winner. :P

So far, the responses have been good.

I've found a Mosin, for a reasonable price of 149.

And I've found a mossberg for 190.

I was looking at the road blocker shotgun today.. its interesting.. I wish I could have that
compensator mounted on my saiga instead..

2 guns (rifle, and pistol), same magazines and ammunition, for $500.

High Point Carbine (9mm or .40) $189
High Point Pistol (same caliber) $ 179 total = $ 368
4 ~ 10 round mags.(usable in both guns) @ $15 ea. $ 60 $ 428
6 boxes of ammo. (50 rounds per box) @ $12/box $ 72 $ 500

This will give you 2 guns that share the same mags., ammo., and gives you a total of 6 magazines, and 300 rounds of ammunition, for your $500.

A good start. I use to have a Point 9 but it was one of the old bulky all steel ones, it was okay. But I noticed that the new one's look a lot better.

"Mosin for $149"

You can do cheaper than that. It takes some looking and you aren't always guaranteed the best stuff however.

If the one you found is in good shape and comes with its accessories, then I'd say go for it.

1. Rem 870, Mossberg 500, Benelli Nova/supernova. The web is pretty divided between the 500 and 870. Both are great guns, in a good price range, and offer the most flexibility for a firearm ever. The most important thing would be what YOU like. That mossberg fit better in your grip and you like the camo finish? Buy it and don't listen to anyone else that wants to dog you. Benilli's pumps are good. Its a lot of plastic and looks like a space gun, but it gets the job done. Also they are priced in the pump range, not the crazy expensive semi autos.
Based on what I know I could get RIGHT NOW: Rem 870 Wingmaster @ my pawnshop for 150 bucks. Its a gun that will never let you down. I'd slap the 18" tactical barrel on it too, Cabella's shows it as 119$ but I expect to do that well locally or better. Sling, side saddle, flashlight mount, and sights can all be had in a reasonable range. While nice ghost ring tac sights will push us outside of the 500 dollar range, as well as LED tac light on the forearm, suitable substitutes are abundant. Also Walmart has the express super mag (what is currently loaded with buckshot at the bedside) for 230 dollars right now. Gives you the ability to load 3s and 3.5s, which is still totally awesome, but I'm finding less important everyday. Also slugs are getting better all the time. I'm not confident outside of 50 yds with my smoothbore using rifled slugs, but rifled barrels and chokes with sabots increase effectiveness a great deal.
Used wingmaster (150$)+tac barrel (120$) + Rem rifled choke (40$) + 90 dollars worth of whatever else you feel like spending (you should probably just buy shells with this honestly) = what I would do with 500 bucks, getting basically 3 guns in one

As for pistols, Glock 17. SWAT buddy convinced me finally that this is the call. its just faster, and it always goes bang. Sig would be the only other option. Rounds are also cheaper, which means more practice.

Yes I could find a cheaper one.. that might take a bit of time..

The fact that I can look at the rifle with my own eyes and find the one I want makes it worth the slightly higher price..
