Ear protection
Sep 18 2009, 11:28 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 18 2009, 11:28 PM EDT
I haven't seen anyone planning on bring ear protection. Imo it's one of the more important things to have since if you plan to use firearms you'll eventually damage your hearing. I personally have quite a few of those small foam ear plugs saved up still in the bag. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I prefer ear muffs, but they tend to get in the way a lot. Do you find this valuable?

I was going to say the same thing, but attached to your head gear / eye protection.

My first aid kit has 6 pairs of ear plugs. Good for gunfire, or sleeping through moaning zombies.

I have several pairs of 'Triple flange' ear plugs... they seem to do just fine in an indoor & outdoor shooting environment. Do you find this valuable?

an important topic from the past

question, what does every one think about built in protection? kinda like a motorcycle type helmet. it could have air filters, eyepro, and hearing protection all at once if you could design and build such a feat.

IMO i would want the bare minimum for ear protection or at least some that are easy to carry and put on and take off. Your ears are very valuable to detect approaching zombies. They should not be worn all the time. The comment earlier about "...sleeping through moaning zombies." is a terrible idea if there is a zombie around make sure it can't get then just deal with it, don't put in plugs in case it finds its way in, if so you are defenseless. I wouldnt wear earplugs although i can see why you would want to. That way incase somethings behind me, got in or something like that i might be ble to hear it. If im up on a roof shooting and one gets in downstairs and comes up to get me from behind unless i hear it im screwed. Do you find this valuable?

So have some friends watch your back rather than fighting alone. If you deafen yourself with constant gunfire, how will you hear zombies sneaking up anyway?

That's why i plan to stick to melee as much as possible. I'm on the fence about ear protection.
For all those current military guys out there, does the Green Machine recommend ear protection to soldiers in the field?

Very true someone could watch my back but id still like to be able to hear them yell if something went wrong. I would just feel more comfortable without them in and being able to stop and listen.

Have you ever worn earplugs? They don't mute out the entire world. They simply make it a little quieter, especially with regard to high volume things like gunshots. You would still hear someone yelling.

Yes but it is very possible that zombies wouldn't even make much noise. There really isn't a reason for a half-brain-dead instinctual creature to moan or growl while it is moving. It is possible that the only sound they would make would be footsteps which would be drowned out by earplugs. I still recommend having a decent pair of ear protection hangin over your neck just in case sustained fire is necessary, but with a .22 they probably aren't even necessary.

The only thing I have against ear defence is that

1. Restriction of hearing makes it hard to communicate in battle conditions, especially if you do not have a loud voice.

2. Wearing them for bed time is great until you do not here the Zed sneaking through the back door.

I'm sticking with my Falklands hat, what are they called, "Unkle Buck hats"? The ones with the large ear things.

I wear the surefire ear protection. It works like a dream. It’s quiet enough that when I wear it I can be talking on my cell phone and hear someone just as if I wasn’t wearing them at all but be standing on a hot range and get my ear drums busted out. They cost around $12 and they last forever, I’m usually using mine at least 3 times a week. I’ve even used them while wearing my headset for my radio while at work and didn’t have to turn up the volume button at all. I’ve sent them over to friends in the sand box and they love em too!! They rock I have a pair in my range bag, one in my BOB, one in my work desk, and one… well you get the point. Do you find this valuable?

What about some hearing protection/enhancement? protects against impulse sounds (gunshots) but enhances smaller sounds (twigs breaking)

Exactly what I was thinking reading through the thread. I agree that you should wear ear protection but I remember in the Corps, I was having a hard time hearing the instructor during a live fire single envelopment exercise and I took out my ear plugs to hear because I was not going to get shot nor shoot someone.

Also, can you get one of these headphones with radio comm?

At the cheaperthandirt website, I also found these which is what I would be looking for except people do not like the size which may be a problem for us as well.

I believe so. But they're costly and pretty bulky. On the flip side, they continue to offer sound protection even when the batteries die.
