Bird shot
Sep 25 2009, 4:59 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 25 2009, 4:59 PM EDT
would bird shot be stroung enough to penatrate a human skull?
i ask this because the only two places to get ammo in town are wal-mart and k-mart(sorta like walmart but it's sucky-er)

and besides a couple of slugs/buckshot the majority of thier stock is turkey/target loads (and the occasianal upland load)
would they be good enough? and what is the differance between turkey/target/upland loads?

the main difference is the size of the pellets contained within the shell.... a #3 shot is larger with less pellets #7 is smaller with more (the scale is from double aught (00) to number 10 (i think)) Do you find this valuable?

Theres "000"

I wouldn't even try with birdshot to be honest with you. I don't know if it will penetrate a skull or not. I'd rather not wait till you actually need it to find out

I'm gonna say yes at close range.

We were shooting at some assorted junk, and the bird shot managed to penetrate
all the thick plastic parts on a vac, tv, dashboard.. etc..

You'd have to get up close and personal in my opinion. Your chances would also depend on what kind of choke you had on your barrel. Cheney's budy lived and he got shot in the face. I'd be willing to bet Dick had an improved cylinder on his shotgun. If it would have been full choke the guy wouldn't have been seen or heard from again. Do you find this valuable?

Go for the biggest shot you can get.

#6 shot (small game load) will do the job up close. Look for "heavy game load" if possible.

Turkey loads in #4 & #6 are high speed rounds. Duck and Goose "express loads" are good too.

I'm a fan of #4 stuff for general personal defense work, especially indoors. Of course 00 buck is best for defense, but if you can't get it - heavy hunting stuff works : )

Get Bird shot to practice with.

Get anything from "BBB" to "Rifled Slugs" for defense/combat.

Slugs are great for penetration, and BBB is good for Man on Zed combat.

does that mean the wincheaster hevy turkey loads would surrfice?
and wall/K mart does have slugs/buckshot just not nearlly as much
(theres about 20-30 boxs of 5 shells on the shelf whereas turkey/target loads theres 10-25 bulk bricks of 100 each)

Really, if that's all you can get now... stockpile. Some ammo of some sort is better than no ammo & wishing you had it.

In regards to Zeds, if you are within 5 meters of them you're going to get a confirmed kill of some sort. That's based on the idea that a "Head Shot" will take them down.

If it's in regards to home defense.... well, if I broke into your house & you shot me with #8 bird shot.... I'm pretty sure I'm going to either go down upon receiving the shot... or run as fast as I can.

Think about it...

OOOh, I just remembered: My brother was telling me about Pheasant hunting a while ago. There are a lot of factors in regards to choosing the right round & when to shoot. Angle of Attack is something he Kept bringing up.

If you try to shoot a Pheasant with in range of you being able to acquire a target... if your "Angle of attack" is wrong the Pheasant will LITERALLY just shake it off & continue flying...

Any input here from frequent hunters?

Well hey, why don't you grab all of them and mix some buck shot or other nasty additives to the bird-shot and just reseal them? Do you find this valuable?

I know of two ways that I've modified the cheap walmart ammo into some cool rounds.

Mods, is this better left alone?

I must say, I'm kinda happy they did. I had the same question. A box of #4 birdy is cheaper than a box of buckshot. Do you find this valuable?

I did notice it was ridiculous old, but I don't want a kid somewhere to start sticking nails and glass into his shotgun and expecting only good things:) Do you find this valuable?
