I am planning on and am currently saving up for basically a bomb shelter. Chances are that there will be one maybe two more people with me. Hopefully by the time that I build my Structure they will have provided enough money to buy their own supplies of water/food.

---Things I'm Not Sure About
If this site uses BBcode
Depth of concrete foundation
Max height of wall, because of zoning laws.

---Things I Am Sure About/Plans For The Shelter

Dimensions: 30' Wide x 30' Long, 12' Tall
11: 1/2' tall x 5' wide Windows with Slide down steel shutters
Windows locations: 2 on front wall. one on either side of the steel door, 3 on every other wall spaced 4' apart.

---Wall Description
Double, possibly triple Cinder Block width
Reinforced with Steel Rebar every block
Blocks will be filled in with reinforced concrete
Razor Wire will line the tops of all walls

---Entrance/Exit
1: 5' wide x 7' high Steel sliding door in the front, with some HUGE locks
1: 2' wide x 2' long Sliding Trap door in the ceiling, with a slide/drop down latter

Cleaning kit for your weapons, as without it they'll eventually seize up, especially the .22's. They're a dirty round (high lead) and gum up the inner workings like you wouldn't believe. And the low power round makes semi-auto weapons even more susceptible to jamming if the gun is dirty.

You may want to switch your handgun for something of a high caliber. I mean, I love .22 pistols, but if something is in pistol range, a bigger caliber is in order IMO. I would suggest either .40 S&W or .45 ACP.

Otherwise it's a pretty solid list, though estimate high on the building materials. Once you get into it, it's surprising how fast the materials bill runs up.

cool. i'll edit the above post.

though about the pistol. The reason i love a .22 is because of what they do when they enter someones head. Usually a .22 will enter through the front of the skull, slow down hit the back of the skull and bounce around inside the brain. scrambling it. most anything with a higher caliber or fire power will possibly just go right through.

that leaves for an extremely extremely small chance that the bullet will either miss the brain, or shatter on impact. etc.
i was watching one episode on Ripley's were a duck was shot in the head with an arrow. it pushed the brain out of the way and the duck lived. with the freaking arrow in it's head!

It would increase costs, but if you bury the shelter you'd have better security. Maybe not even fully bury it: hows this for an idea. Dig a hole half the height of the walls, and then once your structure is complete, bury it with the dirt you dug out of the hole, making a "Mound"

The extra costs included would be the rental of a backhoe and the extra drainage you would require.

Seeds and tools for farming. One year MRE's lasts one year. One years crops produce enough seed for the following year.

Also, if you are making the shelter as good nuclear bunker, you need the concrete 2ft thick.

That's extremely debated. The ZSG would have you believe it, I personally think it's possible for the reason that it was popular with hitmen for years, but it isn't proven one way or the other. It may enter the brain. or it may glance off and not penetrate the skull.

Even if .22 bounces, a .40 or .45 caliber round is still gonna deal massive damage when it enters the brain, probably more than a richocheting .22. Also, .22 weapons are notoriously tricky in terms of ammo.

Big caliber weapons tend to fire all but the really crappy stuff no problem. My Ruger 10/22 on the other hand reacts differently to everything. Federal ammunition is downright scary in the standard mag but feeds perfectly through the extended mag I have. Remington feeds good through both but jams at round 20-21 in the extended mag consistently. Remington high-grain .22 feeds perfectly through both.

Great stuff, good for any more realistic disaster, and if the zombies decide to have a go.

That said, what happens if/when the country knocks on your door, demanding you obey?

That has been a problem on my base plan, as well.

See, I plan on manufacturing firearms for a living. Therefore I have an excuse to have a larger than normal stock of firearms and ammo without raising too much "Is that guy a TERRORIST?!?! 0.o". But there is no way to get around how any shmuck with a briefcase, suit, and a federal agent's position can fu.ck up your plan.

it would work, but would be very unneeded. This is mainly a defensive structure for an undead attack, though it can be used for most other natural/unnatural disasters. That is why i'm making it so high with the walls extending a couple feet above the ceiling/roof. I'd use it as a bunker and use the tower technique.

~PedroAsani.
I meant to add that, but forgot. thanks for reminding me. Now i have to go read up on farming. lol

~inu-dude25
i'll just try out a couple different types of guns later, and see which works best with which ammo type and magazine. :D

what would they demand? and when? durning an invasion or peace?

Your only planning 1 year supply of water and MRE's for 1 person? But you say you may have 1 or 2 others with you. That cuts your supplies by 1/2 to 1/3.

You may need more food, or a plan to scavenge, or hunting, or seeds and potting and planting material. Potting (growing produce in planters), you will need planters, planting soil, water, and sun light or artificial light.

I would add a more extensive first aid kit. The small ones will run out fast.

Instead of a high powered telescope I would think a couple of binoculars would be easier to store, handle, and take with you out side.

I like the general idea, the weight bench, and the total idea.

1 year supply of MREs for me only. 5 year supply of water for all of us.
they will have to buy their own food and pay partial cost for the water is they want to be in my fortress. We have agreed on this previously. though i need a written agreement. ;)

and i'm definitely going to look into growing crops, and such.

thanks for ideas. :D

Got that right.

These days, no doubt some bloody ******** would insist upon various building permits to build said structure.
In fact, I heard from an American friend of mine that kids can be charged with "improper use of a house" or something like that, for drinking alcohol inside!

When you get in more trouble for drinking inside than outside because you have to ask permission from your local government to throw a party, you know something is ****** up.
Never mind the oppression of the federal government, that sort of problem starts at local level, go kick some asses there and work your way up if you're so inclined.

I did some research for this in another thread a few months back, and the ricochet has been demonstrated through autopsy enough times for it to be called (in true Mythbusters style) Confirmed, but it doesn't happen in every case. It really depends on distance from target, point of entry and angle of entry.

Numbers? About 15% of .22 death cases dealt with showed signs of the ricochet effect. I forget the sample size, but the itch at the back of my brain says about ~3000.

You'll want to increse your medical supplies. Store some whiskey, it'll come in handy.
all the survival stuff really comes in handy. Gas masks, Goggles, lots of clothes. Instead of dumbells, get a bowflex. Its a better exercise system and it'll keep everyone in good shape. Just as well you can get ones that don't take up a lot of space. Also, a few night vision goggles will help a great deal.

it would be much more cost effective and just as safe to just put all that stuff in the attic of a second story house and then when the infection hits u chop off your stairs. zombies will eventually break anything, but they will never learn to jump a whole story of a house, also this way you will be more comfortable and help will be more accessible if you trust help (unlike me) Do you find this valuable?
