Panic
Oct 8 2009, 4:58 PM EDT
Panic can also be used to one's advantage.unfortunately for the people congregating in large groups, there will be little to no controll. Never go to large stores in the very first stages. Never take highways or freeways as a method of transportation, you will be gridlocked. - use the rail lines! who will be driving where trains normally go??? not many. Where do traintracks take you?? lots of places. You can use the chaos to go to other places such as buddies houses/ rondevous points, to leave the city by foot or car/ railway line. or fortify your house/ apartment. - I used to think apartments were death traps in a zombie outbreak, thinking if any got in the stairwell, they could spread through the building. If you keep proper security of the building, it'll stand better than many "fortresses". Plus theres enough people where teamwork is possible. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

"use the rail lines! who will be driving where trains normally go???"Trains, for one. If you mean walking by the tracks, that is agreeable. If you mean go into a train, that is just as bad as going on a bus. Do you find this valuable? |

The only way I'd use the tracks is if I still had an ATV.

The train tracks that run past my house lead directly into.... the abandoned El Toro Marine Corps Air Station!

"Trains, for one.Yes, yes I mean walking by the tracks. I don't think many trains will be working by then anyway. To me, i'd rather do that than follow any normal road. Yes, you could probably drive a vehicle, too, of course one high enough so it won't get bogged down on the tracks. Stryker - thats sick, also proves that train tracks lead everywhere. meanwhile most people will be taking roads and highways and getting stuck. Do you find this valuable? |

Ugh, you're still gonna have a hard time getting hung up on the rails. You'll be able to get on but you run the risk of tearing a tire off the rim getting off the rail.

I strongly agree that panic can be exploited.Though I have no idea what that has to do with train tracks... Do you find this valuable? |

"I strongly agree that panic can be exploited.Ok heres my strategy. Outbreak happens, everyone's running around screaming and what not. Reguarding you already have what you need, use that time to go to your buddies and get organized while everyone else is either trying to leave or raid some grocery store (worst place to be at that specific time). Do what you gotta do behind the scenes to get organized first. once things have died down, go out in armed teams to secure what goods you need. (you'll probably be able to find much in parking lots [people raid, zombies come, people drop things in the panic]). To escape, don't take roads. I've read the zombie survival guide and one of the things I pointed out is that highways, freeways, roads... will all be jam packed with cars, no one's getting out. Also if the Grid locked people are trapped, theres more infected that will be that way. Train tracks will be less heavily trafficked. Everyone will be thinking: OMFG ROADS, and drive.... and become trapped. meanwhile train tracks lead to other cities, other places the same way roads do. Besides the occasional train or odd mobs of people who are thinking the same, there will be not many people going that way, leaving a safe-ish passage right to wherever you wanna go. If you have a 4x4 or jeep, you can drive on the tracks, but even a car should be able to pass along side with ease. Theres your "highway". get as far as you can, go the rest on foot, and keep your eyes peeled because while railroads are fenced in at many places, it's still not 100% secure. Its faster and less of a blocked way to travel. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

An atv works great on railroads. I use to ride mine on some to get to different trails. if you can get one to travel on the tracks than do it better than a car or truck. It would also work on those grid locked highways. Simply ride next to the road. in the median or ditches or even on the shoulder of the road.

the thing is that most people will be dumb enough to put cruise control on so the highways might clear, but they might not.another thing is the "blueways" or scenic roads that will most likely be un-crowded. Do you find this valuable? |

If you take the tracks, you better still be careful. Not too many zeds can board a non-stop train nor much can stop it. I agree with the on foot idea, maybe a motorcycle, stealing a locomotive, or a railroad maintenance truck that can both drive on the road and on the tracks.Remember - just like zeds - Look, Listen and Live. "Panic can also be used to one's advantage.i agree there would probably be so much chaos around you that anybody staying calm and using there head is going to fair much better than a panicked mob. if you see the timing is not right then leave before waltzing into a crowd. assesing the situation and devising a plan before getting in the middle of such a panic should be your first priority but i do agree it can be capitalized upon if timing is right. also railways does sound like a viable option but the only way to be sure is to scout both then decide which is safer. the govt is going to be using the rails to mobilize during the event of an outbreak, they keep those rails running - if at all possible. we hit a communication line while digging up a main sewer line once and had a helicopter hovering over us within a few minutes - they are insane about keeping the railroads going.but walking the lines would be an option, or maybe an atv with a crap load of extra fuel on the rack.
