I like the fort, plenty of area to grow plants in, but how about water? I suppose you can collect rainwater/moisture from the air. But the saltwater will/have almost certainly contaminated any ground water, and you'll need quite a bunch of people to guard the fort, it looks rather big! 2  out of 2 found this valuable. I'm aware of the technique, but it's painfully slow, you need a rather big area to supply a person with water for a day. And I'm not sure, but it seams like the fort would need alot of defenders, hence using all cultivatable ground you can get.

If you know how to make your own moonshine, you can desalinate water.... same process

There are commercial "water cleaning"/ distillation devices which is basically a pump that can make salt water into clean water in a matter of seconds.

Does it also remove microbes and parasites? Is it handdriven? Does the person in question posses one of those?

I don´t own one of those (though I probably should) but I found them, I am not sure if it removes parasites and such but the video said that you could use almost any water source, so I suppose that it does... I have the video on my survival plan page, http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/How+to+organize+a+base/revision/26 It´s at the bottom of the page.

The "Impenetrable Fortress" is probably one of the most overrated tactics ever mindlessly repeated in zombie movies. Castles worked in the middle ages for one reason: they were meant to repel humans. Fortresses work against vikings, vampires, werewolves, and aliens because after awhile they get bored and wander off. Zombies, however, will stay out there until the end of time because they don't get bored, hungry, or need to take pee breaks. You're going to run out of food/water/power/morale/whatever because its inevitable- and while you're waiting for that to happen, the zeds are just going to pile up outside your walls.
Meh, but don't take my advice. Someone needs to stock that soon-to-be-abandoned fort full of supplies so I can snag them once your toast. XD

Impenetrable Fortress builder here, quick question. If my base is completely self sufficient, how long will I last? And who will have toast?

The zombies will have your toast while you're out trying to find enough supplies to build that behemoth. Don't get me wrong, its an impressive behemoth, but a behemoth nonetheless. Even if you have the intended 64 people on hand, your behemoth will take years to do the building, let alone finding all the concrete, pipes, etc. needed to complete construction. So what do you plan to do in the mean time? Turn the bulldozers on "quiet mode" so not to attract the hordes of flesh-eating monsters you undoubtedly dragged behind you when searching for a good concrete mixer?
Unless, of course, you built the behemoth before the infestation- in which case I can assume two things about you:
1. You're scary paranoid
2. You won the lottery three times

But if you do manage to construct this behemoth, then hats off to you, because you have my toast granted that you can keep 64 people content enough to keep from committing mutiny.

Build is intended pre-Z.

1. Yes, but not about zombies. Disasters in general (Peak Oil, Peak Food, Peak Water)

Whilst it looks like it requires a huge investment, it really doesn't. The majority of it is simply a large wall, total length being a little over 10,000 feet. Most farms in the UK have walls around each field, and their boundaries are way closer to 50,000 feet or more. If you were to build it all on one level, it would be simply a farm.

As for 2, Total construction for the place it is going will only be about $3.5 million. Cheap parts and labour in that area of the world. :)

Finally, as for what I will do in the meantime, that would be parts 1 and 2 of the plan.

Sounds nice. So far, I like. But then there's the question of ammo. If the undead are piling up outside and you're already low on ammo, how will you leave to find more, unless you make your own bullets, which is better, but where do you get THAT stuff once it runs low? And even so, what happens when the zeds outnumber your bullets and you don't have time to make more?
(This is assuming that you somehow got a hold of guns in the UK, unless the plan is otherwise. if so, do tell!)

If you have made a big nice wall to stop zombies from getting to you shooting them would be unnecessary, you would not need to waste ammo on them, just take a chainsaw, attach it to a chain, some protective clothing and have fun with your little killing machine. Now chainsaws are maybe not the most ideal tool to use since they will break, but if you have a chain or even a rope with something heavy and spiky on the end of it you will be able to kill them... Sure you will get tired by doing this, so you if your alone you might have a problem... or you could always have a build in killing machine in the wall (supposing that you have electricity or gasoline) that just kills them for you :)

The wall will be fine, its the front gate that needs worrying about, but even if that is somehow zombieproof, then you have to worry about what the zombies will bring with them. If carrion birds like crows follow them, then there go the crops.
Aside from the balls crushingly awesome sounding chainsaw-on-a-rope method, you'll need a better way of keeping zombies away- and I don't think built in killing machines exist yet...
then again if you've got three and a half million bucks on hand, then I guess you could invent a Voltron-esque bodyguard or two.

I know this plan isn´t perfect, and yes it will take years to complete the whole base, but you work your way there, section by section and while building you will kill any zombies that approaches of course. Now if you were to run into a horde with 500 zombies or more, which many might do, you will try to fight them off as good as you can and if you fail you always have your escape plan. Now imagine 1000 different people do this in 1000 different locations. I think that many of them will fail building this base, but I doubt that all of them fail with building the base... unless they all choose a stupid location like next to a big city where there will be hordes of 10 000 zombies wandering around. if just one of these people are able to finish the base we will still have a base and human kind will have an increased chance of survival. Since the base should have radio communication (and Internet if it´s still working) telling people to gather supplies and head towards the base.

What are you talking about....
It's putting the water through a filtration system, and then a condenser...

It's the quickest method to clear the water of salt and added extras.

ah, but its only meant for 64 people. Yeah, that's a fairly large amount of people, but not enough to fight off a massive hoard. But 64 is just big enough to be a problem. Say more people come and want to stay with you. Of course, you're smart so you say no because then you'll run out of food, but you've got 63 other people in there with you who may or may not have the same opinion. Then, friends, you have to tread lightly because you might just have a mini civil war on your hands.

The base is not going to be in the UK.

Ammo will have been legally bought and stockpiled ahead of time. Not expecting to have to deal with millions, just a couple of hundred thousand at most. Population at most will be 145-150,000

Now that is something I hadn't considered. Gold star.

Of course, since my plan includes cats for keeping the vermin down, they should be able to deal with birds, providing there aren't too many. But some kind of bird control should be included in there.
