Office/ Apartment Building sweeping

Remember what Max Brooks says. Before entering a room with a closed door, knock - to avoid unwanted surprises. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

also, sweeping with two man teams for safety is important

another idea would be to tag doors with a piece of tape from the door to the frame after you clear them, so if something opens the door again you'll know.

yea, i already read the tape part. You could even leave "bread crumbs" so you don't end up backtracking. Strings, Glow sticks, tape, posted notes...
but yea, knocking before you enter a closed room works - when I read it from the Zombie survival guide, I was like.... HEY that makes so much sence!

It's also courteous if someone is actually living/sleeping in there so you don't frighten the living **** out of them. Do you find this valuable?

Not stabding in front of a door is basic common sense in this sort of thing as well.

well thats a given, standing off to the side, opening the door and sticking a mirror out to see is a lot safer. Do you find this valuable?

Well the thing is that if you stand to the side and knock the first thing a living, armed, and hostile inhabitant will do is open up on the door. Do you find this valuable?

If someone knocks on a door they usually stand in front of it. Which is bad if someone opens up (shoots) at said door.

I wouldn't be standing in front, i'd just reach my hand out and knock, wait 3 seconds, test the lock, if it opens, open quickly, and have a pocket mirror ready so I can see. I'd have backup if I was doing somthign like this. if I needed shealter and i was alone, i'd just stick to camping on a roof.
i've just heard the same expression used for different meanings, just wanted to make sure.
if I heard a knock on the door (adn i was on high guard) I would second guess firing at the door. especially in a zday situation. Unwanted noise could spell disaster, i'd wait till the door opens. - thats just my mentality, I know that other people on Zday might not be thinking, especially if they just woke up.

But people would be trigger happy and scared so noise wouldn't factor overmuch.

I don't see any need to be stealthy for this, especially if you have a team. If you are systematically and methodically clearing every room, you should be able to make all the noise you want and alert any living occupants of your presence.

I would be calling out to them as well. For me, the building is being cleared of zombies and any useful supplies. I am not there to fight anybody. And the logical thing to do for a tenant is to verbally respond. There is no need to try and ambush me when I knock or open the door.

"Hello? Is anybody in here? I'm looking for survivors, if you're in there please let us know where you are."

" I'm coming in, if there's anyone home don't be alarmed. We're here to help."

That sort of thing is likely to calm any trigger happy survivors holed up inside. If somebody does pop off a few shots though, I'm not there to fight - I'll try to talk to them from safe cover and then I'll leave. I'm not getting my balls blown off for a can of s[split pea soup or some socks, and I'm certainly not going to steal from someone else if they have already laid claim to an area.

good point, good point. But all the shouting could attract a bunch of Z's toward the area. thats the last thing I want to be in a building and someone doesn't want me there - they're shooting at me, I try to leave and theres a wall of zombies comming.
I mean, at that point i'd yell up "stop shooting or else we're all F***ed".
At the same time, I see it being beneficial to give the inhabitants of a building a heads up that my team's there.

Ideally, you would have a general sense of the area before you begin clearing. If there are that many zeds around, you call it a day. Do you find this valuable?

But come to think of it....
Zombies are supposed to have such a good sence of humor. What if a group was to secure the bottom floor, wait at all the stairwells, and then shout up. Any zeds that possibly got in from the ground floor would hear and want "food" and come down. It would bring them to you.
Z's come down the stairwell and get their heads blown off, the remaining floors should be a piece of cake to clear... you'd probably get the odd ones that are trapped inside apartments and halls and stuff, and you may even look like heroes to anyone trapped inside, aggressive or not.

Okay, say you shout up and hear a door slam shut. Obviously, if it were a zombie he would not know how to use a door and would come downstairs to eat you, right? So you wait a minute and go up.

Only, it was a zombie. When turning around to come and eat you, he pushed up against a door and closed it. Now he's trapped inside a room, and you don't know which one it is.

Common sense tells me that if a building is occupied by the undead, survivors will be rare, and vice versa. The main idea being that living, breathing humans will not want to stay in a building with them and will try to escape.

So if you do find both, then you are probably rescuing someone who did not have the means to escape, and yes, you would probably look like a hero to them at that moment. But it is how you conduct yourself after the rescue that will form their long term opinion of you.
