"standard answer: 18 for 'long' guns (shotguns & rifles)Agreed. There are also states in the U.S. (like the Republic of Kalifornia) that have waiting periods. There is legislation about starting to sell ammo only in face-to-face transactions. Do you find this valuable? |

In Canada to purchase a firearm you must be 18 and having received a PAL (possession and acquisition licence). It is possible at 12 (or younger) to obtain a minors certificate which allows you to borrow a gun and ammo unsupervised. It is pretty rare to be for a 9,10 or 11 year old to get permission as it allows them to be unsupervised with a gun. As a note in Canada if you lend a gun to somebody and they commit a crime you could be charged with that crime as well. ie poaching Do you find this valuable? |

In my state, there are very strict firearm laws (compared to other U.S. states), but they allow 14+ year olds to hunt unsupervised. It's weird. Do you find this valuable? |

"Agreed. There are also states in the U.S. (like the Republic of Kalifornia) that have waiting periods.I believe that the correct title is "People's Republic of California (PRC-East)" I wasn't going to get into it w/o some more details (state/county/municipality) but the Federal Background check was supposed to do away w/any waiting period. some areas won't let you buy certain weapons at all, large capacity magazines and you have to register them 2 out of 2 found this valuable. To clarify, in Canada if your under 18 you can recieve a Minor's licence, however:-A minor may only apply for the licence if it is determined that they require hunting to sustain themselves or their family -The minor must be 12 years of age or older -The minor must pass a safety course -The minor must be under direct supervision of a licenced adult at all times 1 out of 1 found this valuable. The police officer at my school (don't ask!), says "Between 15 and 17 years old, a youngster may be in possession of a shotgun, even though he or she may not buy or hire one. AND Under the age of 15, a youngster can only be in possession of a shotgun if supervised by an adult aged 21 or over or if the gun is covered with a securely fastened gun cover to prevent it being fired." The following are direct quotes from the RCMP firearms site. Please note there maybe requirements for children under 12 to be supervised but it is not an inherent requirement for the 12 to 17 range. You are legally responsible for what that 12 year old does with your gun so supervision not a bad idea.A Minors' Licence will enable young people to borrow a non-restricted rifle or shotgun for approved purposes such as hunting or target shooting. Generally, the minimum age is 12 years, but exceptions may be made for younger people who need to hunt to sustain themselves and their families. Applicants must have taken the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and passed the test. The fee to renew a minor’s licence is waived until May 16, 2010. In most cases, the minimum age for obtaining a Minor’s Licence to borrow non-restricted rifles and shotguns is 12 years old. However, there is no minimum age for Aboriginal children who take part in the traditional hunting activities of their community. At their discretion, the CFO may place some conditions on the licence. For example, a certain amount of adult supervision may be required. Do you find this valuable? |

In sweden you're in for a nightmare if you try to get anything more dangerous than a kitchen knife. The whole nation got a horrible "wpnz r bad kk" attitude. Even getting myself the an "armborsts licens" wich means crossbow license is taking like 6 months. And I'm perfectly sane, got no criminal records, over 18 years old and got no eyesight problems.

Keep in mind Canada's Firearms laws change constantly and the websites are always out of date. I just took a course to upgrade my PAL to restricted, and while you are correct LongPlan, heres some additional information that is up to date as of last week (and sadly probably out of date today)-Yes a minor under 12 can get a license if it is deemed necessary to sustain themselves -At 12 a minor can take the safety course, and may "borrow" the firearm however they may not carry the Firearm while hunting, an adult must carry the weapon for them. -At 14, the minor may carry the Firearm, but an adult must be within 20 meters and line of sight for supervision -At 16 the minor may both carry the Firearm and hunt on without an adult supervisor, but still cannot own a Firearm. You just got your RPAL congratulations. I guess that Browning 9mm is new to you. It is not my favourite but definitely an honest gun. Replacing the trigger spring will help. It will shoot milsurp reliably but other ammo is hit and miss (ha ha) fire a hundred rounds before you buy anything else bulk. If you are having problems with the extractor it just needs to be cleaned.Hunting regulation vary province to province. My profile pic is a 10 year from my area who took an awesome elk a couple of weeks ago. Good to know kids like that live here.http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/photo/8067867/10+year+olds+can+kill+too Do you find this valuable? |

"How old can you be to own any type of gun? What is the youngest age you can be?"Depends on state. Feds say 18 for rifle 21 for handgun and while a state can be more restrictive no state can be less. Do you find this valuable? |

"Politics are best left at the door, please. If you really want to fight the laws, pressure your elected officials to change them."Gun laws are political. It is basic conservatives (sometimes known as Republicans) are for liberal gun laws-we should all follow the Constitution and be allowed to own and carry firearms. Liberals (mostly always Democrats) are for conservative gun laws, see PRC-East (I like that). The catch is each side knows gun laws is a loser if they screw with them they don't get reelected. The SCOTUS is going to hear a case in 2010 and it will likely come down on the side of the conservatives based on the 10th & 14th Amendments. Those who are pro gun can't lose in this one if they live in a pro gun state but if you live in PRC-E and it comes down 5-4 (go Kennedy the swing vote) you may be allowed to join the 40+ other states and own real firearms-in theory. The good part is of the nine Justices Ginsburg will probably not make it to the vote so at best 5-4 at worst 4-4 but for now the money is 5-4 Republicans. Sorry firearms laws are always political. I stayed nice and middle of the road, as far as the politics. Do you find this valuable? |
