BOB additions you might not think about
Oct 23 2009, 3:38 AM EDT
Don't forget a good knife, as well as something that can be a form of entertainment. A couple of paperbacks, or a deck of cards (a deck of 'UNO' cards will be a lifesaver if there are children about) are also good, and as strange as it sounds - keep a couple of packs of chewing gum, or a tin/bag of mints in your bug-out bag, too. It's not just about surviving, it's also about keeping people reasonable and friendly as they try to keep Zack from snacking on you and yours.A really nice addition to your BOB is a pack of baby wipes. They let you stay clean and thus, conserve water otherwise used for bathing, and they also serve for use cleaning yourself after using the toilet. Remember, Zack's got a great sense of smell. For your first aid kit - run out and get a bottle each of 91% rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. You can use the alcohol for sterilizing things, and the peroxide for disinfecting surface wounds without causing the person extreme pain. Also- make sure to stick an extra pair of tweezers in there, as well as some needles (for removing splinters). Finally - as cliche as it sounds - stick a towel in there. The uses of a towel are many, and you can always find new uses for one. 33 out of 34 found this valuable. Do you? |

A hearty "well put" on the mints. I've stocked my BOBs with individually wrapped, peppermint LifeSavers. Peppermint is a natural anti-nausea treatment and it helps take the edge off a headache, too, while you're waiting for the Advil to kick in. And to follow up on the needle idea, I make sure my first aid kits always have one of those really big needles like docs use for IVs - you know, the ones that are big enough that they come separate, not actually part of a syringe? They're super sharp and have that beveled/flat edge for picking at that splinter, plus the plastic base gives you a better grip, and they store in a protective cap. 6 out of 6 found this valuable. You really don't need peroxide and rubbing alch - both are good anti-septics. Peroxide doesn't hurt, but can destroy some surfaces - it also breaks down in sunlight. Alch hurts like fire on wounds, but is safe on everything, and also, it is flammable. It does not burn very hot, but can burn for a long time. So, I would suggest dropping the peroxide and just doubling up on the alch - 1) Alch can help you get a fire started, even in the rain. Soak a cloth in it, build your twig hut over it (actually, build the hut before you soak the cloth, alch evaps quick), and the cloth will burn long enough to dry in ignite a good pile of twig kindling. 2) Torch. Fill a coffee cup 2/3 of the way with alch. Swirl it so that some gets to the edge. Carefully light. That cup will put up a good, if uneven, light for over an hour. You can carry it by the coffeee cup handle. 3) Anti-septic (duh) 4) Bug-repellent - not long lasting, but effective. 5) Coolant 6) Toughener (boxers used to soak their fist in it before a fight to toughen them up, I've know many marathon runners and backpackers who do the same with their feet). 9 out of 10 found this valuable. get a bug net that fits over your hat and has a draw string at the neck. It could literally save your life in a world without window bug-screens and medicine.

You can also roll up a few garbage bags, those can be very useful. Make sure they are thick, though. You can throw your BOB contents into the bag, fold/tie up the top, throw the garbage bag into your pack and boom, your stuff won't get wet. Just one of many other uses. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

I have to say, I haven't seen surgical tape, which can save lives from wounds caused by the environment and other humans, as often it has built in infection fighters, not to mention can be used in lieu of bandages.

One thing I've never seen is extra shoes. I don't think an extra pair of mil surplus is in order, but a pair of cheap moccasins weigh about 8-12oz and can be handy. You don't have to put on your boots to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. If your boots get wet, they can be used as a backup while your shoes dry Source of leather for patching gear Trade Item If you get a very bad blister, you may need to wear different shoes for a couple of days. I got a cheap pair at walmart for $10.They have rubber soles and soft leather upper portions. They cinch and tie around the foot so I can run and fight in them. they don't offer as much protection, and I wouldn't try to bug out in them, but I suspect they will be very welcome additions. Mostly I was thinking that if I was dug in somewhere I could wear them around inside and save some wear and tear on my boots, and help to prevent athelete's foot. 11 out of 11 found this valuable. yeah thats true but they still make for better nail clippers than your teeth, and it takes up so little room and weight i think you'd be hard pressed to find a good enough reason to leave it behind.
