What would be a good source of alternate energy for after zday.
Oct 31 2009, 1:51 AM EDT
The other day I was watching the Science Channel and there was this speacil on about life after people were gone on earth. It said after 48 hrs that the electricty for most of america would be gone. except at certain hydro electricty generators" those damns that have a generator that make power". anyways unless your at the hoover damn ur going to be in the dark. it also said the hoover damn could run selfmaintained for two years with out human interaction so that would be a good place to hide out as well. but my alternate powersource after zday would be a combination of solar panels and windmill generators soley because my nighbor has these on his farm.

No problem, I am always up to talking about alternative energy. Any questions?

Yea is it possible to build a hand crank dynamo strong enough to power a laptop, because there might be a situation where im in an attic seller or just need quick power.

Got a drill? Check this out:http://www.zetatalk.com/energy/tengy05n.htm or this, if you've got the cash: http://www.windstreampower.com/Human_Power_Generator_Series.php Do you find this valuable? |

also i'd like to point out that the hoover dam is not the only hydroelectric plant in the united states, there are numerous dam's down south that were built back in during the great depression to help get power to those areas.

If you got the cash you can buy a portable solarcell that's about the size of a normal book (unfolded and collecting energy that is) wich is more than enough to power cellphones, lamps, laptops and even cooking plates with some patience.I posses a few myself and they are very usefull when out in the wild. Always bring one or two when hiking/camping. They are however quite expensive. I'll see if I can find some english site. Mine is bought from a swedis company and their page is in swedish (duh). Alright, found one (ninjad it from a friend of mine actually) http://www.selectsolar.co.uk/ It didn't have exactly the same modell as mine, but there is plenty of solar things for Z-day survivors and environmentalists alike. 2nd edit: Those flexible/rollable solarcells look really interesting. Neat and handy, and you can stuff a roll or two in your bag. Killer trade value aswell (I could guess) Do you find this valuable? |

found this on the straightdope.com website. This should help with knowing how long power will persist.http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2165/when-the-zombies-take-over-how-long-till-the-electricity-fails Do you find this valuable? |

Well if you have important data stored on them, you would be able to access it.If the phone has GPS, you can navigate until the satellites burn up in re-entry. Just because the internet is gone, doesn't mean technology is useless. Local storage would still be accessible. You kids with your netbooks and instant online wi-fi bluetooth. YOU DON'T KNOW THE PAIN OF DIAL-UP! I WAS THERE, MAN! I HAD TO INSTALL GAMES FROM 36 1.44MB FLOPPIES! Do you find this valuable? |

"Well if you have important data stored on them, you would be able to access it.**shudders** I still hear the modem noise in my nightmares. When you need to play wolfinstein, you need to play. On the subject i am a bigger fan of wind power, the average person can service a windmill( which can be used for way more than electricity, like pumping water) while most can not fix a solar cell. You can improvise a windmill, not a solar cell. Do you find this valuable? |

I have two aggregates at home, not sure about the translation but it uses gas to create electricity

"While those are valid points, you must rember that wind power is also bulkier, more reliant on weather, takes up more room, makes more noice, and they are pretty hard to move around. And require more service. You can buy a proper solar cell today, slap it on your roof and enjoy it for years without looking att it, and still have a nice renewable powersource on Z-day. I had an Idea once about a small wind powered "bug catcher" with lights in it and small nets on the edges to capture insects (nasty, but abundant nutriance/protein supply in almost any part of the world unless you live in Antartica) but I figured people wouln't be that interested in it. (Imagine a small fan with butterfly nets surrounded by christmas lights :p) Do you find this valuable? |
