Raider Defense
Nov 4 2009, 2:32 AM EST
Protecting yourself from the undead isn't enough. The living will also pose a major threat. How will you protect yourself (and others) from rampaging gangs of thugs and murderers? Will you run? Will you hide? Will you fight? Will you pay them tribute to leave you alone? I realize this thread has probably been done, but I'd like to know what everybody's ideas are. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Protecting yourself from the undead isn't enough. The living will also pose a major threat.Depends on the size of the force, their arms and their demands. Since I will have an unlimited water supply, they can have as much as they can carry (they supply the containers). Food, whatever we can spare from the crops. Again, they need to have something to carry it away in. If they want to trade for more, I would be willing to listen. Anything else, they can't have it. And yes, it will be defended with force. 7 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

My group and I are all History buffs, and a few are engineers. We discussed this same problem, and have followed history. Our BOL is a hill top, with only one narrow approach. We will use many medieval siege breaking tactics to prevenet entry to our palisade. Notably thrown rocks, boiling water, and mortar rounds( easy recipe from my step-dad, an ex-green beret)Our primary defense is to not be noticed though 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Always be ready..... Have a few people posted up to ambush incoming raiders... If anybody comes to you for whatever reason, have many guns pointed at them. If you expect everyone to be a raider, you cant be surprised by them

While I have no plans to become a raider, if I was one I would send a single man to become part of the group for awhile. Find out what they have and how they defend it before I ever fired a single shot. It may also be possible to catch one of your people and 'ask' them what I needed to know. Depending on if we needed it or not we may poison your water supply. There are all sorts of nasty ways to get what you want.

The best way to prepare for raiders is to do what livingdeadman just did. Try to think like one.I posted a thread this summer about highwaymen and how a small group of raiders could take down unsuspecting and desperate survivors a number of different ways by setting up ambushes along roadways. It was met with anger and accusations by some and a very tough challenge by someone who plans to live the raider lifestyle if SHTF. I think its a great experiment for everyone to think about different ways they'd raid if that was the path they chose and realize how devious the human brain really is. We sell our fellow human beings short when we just figure raiders will be brain dead crack heads that come at you with their hands down and their chin up. Prepare for the worst. 7 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'm gonna do what I can to make my stronghold look like it isnt worth raiding. Black curtains between windows and barricades prevents movement being seen. Another idea that crossed my mind would be to go around your surrounding area and try to make it looks like everything has already been raided. Like in my case where the front door isnt an important line of defence (the surrounding concrete wall is) i could just leave it open, as well as any unused apartment doors in the building i plan on fortifying. Another idea would be to hit every house you can with spraypaint tags that might insinuate that the area has aready been picked clean by a large organized raiding party. Spraypainting "Empty" or "Clear" on every building in your area might cause potential bandits to not take the risk of clearing a house thats already empty.I dont know how elaborate bandit groups tricks might be, IE sending a couple "survivors" ahead on foot to try and draw people out for a potential rescue, then ambushing when their defences are compromised. My party at the moment is all active duty marines, and with our access to military grade munitions and the ability to upgrade defences to the point of being human proof, ide be more worried about the zeds than bandits. Steel window shutters are hard to get through even with the proper tools, not to mention we will most likely be firing on them. Lastly, we have to remember this IS a game of survival, not necessarily morality. Every survivor is tasked with the responsibility of doing everything they can to prevent the extermination of the human race. If you get in a situation you cant handle when it comes to bandits, this phrase might hold true. If you can't beat em', join em'. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Setting up multiple ambush points with purpose built kill zones.Narrow checkpoints All round sniper points Incorrect sign posts Basically anything that could confuse the enemy and kill them as quickly as possible. Unless it was a Fort Pedro I would restrain from building static positions in favor of simple shell scrapes so they can be used and then forgotten about. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I can give them water, and If I can spare food I will give them some...However I would not be in the position to give anything other than that, if they wish to start a war, I will have no other choice but to join them or fight back. Joining is unlikely, since I am sure they would see me as a much better slave canidate...Though they may keep me around, if only for the fact to tie me in the middle of the road for survivors to stop and help me. I will not post anything regarding any defensive measures, for the fact of not wanting anyone in my buisness. (CoughcoughBEWAREOFIRISHCoughcough) Do you find this valuable? |

It occurred to me that the cliff-dwellers of the American southwest had a great survival strategy against raiders. The doors to their houses were on the roof, and the ladders they used to go inside could quickly be pulled up leaving the raiders with no ingress. I'm sure a smart group of survivors could adapt this strategy and use it not only against raiders but also zeds.
