Bug Out Bag - is biggest
Nov 4 2009, 4:26 AM EST
Yep, the Bugout Bag is biggest and you can get more stuff in it. So out of the two the 55ltr Bugout Bag makes the best (BOB) I just like the 3 day elite! mainly because of the pocket for the laptop, not really needed in a BOB, but general use its handy...

Yep, you can carry it when stuffed full, I packed one with as much stuff as on the bugout gear website (http://www.bugoutgear.co.uk/whatsinyours.html) the spade and sleeping roll are strapped to the outside though, and it weighed in at 17.8kg. You probably don't need as much as that so should be a bit lighter, again that depends on what you pack it with.

That would depend on how fit you are! but yes, I don't think having it that full all the time is a good idea, it just shows you can, if you need to take a lot of stuff with you (in a vehicle) then you can, if you are carrying it around all day, you'd put only the items you really need or are going to use, or are comfortable in carrying.

Bags tend to be much like houses. The bigger they are, the more the owners fill them with stuff. Problems then crop when you try and move.I would say you need to have several different bags, each with similar but different contents. Light emergency BOB - Goes everywhere with you. Some people have made articles on BOB in a Tin, Phone Wallet, etc. Tools and basic supplies. Weighs no more than 1lb,etc General BOB - Something you can take most places, but not everywhere. Small rucksack, maybe 20 lbs. Car BOB - Big bulky. Comprehensive. Car only. 40 lbs+ Do you find this valuable? |

That sounds sensible, if you can afford to buy 3 bags.

My general bag comes up to about 35lbs. It's not that bad if you make a point of getting up and walking around with it. the first 2-3 days it was a pain, but now i go 15-20 miles no prob with it. I'ts all a matter of conditioning.

As for buying three bags, right now I have mine in a small pocket pouch, an old rucksack and a duffel bag. Battered, worn but functional. Do you find this valuable? |

"But can you: take it to work and have it nearby - under a desk or in a drawer?Good point. First off, there is no way in hell any airline would let me on with this thing. As for work, yup, it's all in my old issued Blackhawk camelback bag. No big deal to put it under my desk, no one says a word. and as for movies or general shopping, yeah, i don't generally wander into a retail setting with a large bag on of any sort. I do have a small bundle of goods that wieghs less than a pound on my belt. Do you find this valuable? |

Not sure why you'd want to take a bug out bag shopping or to work? It's meant to hold enough essentials to keep you going in the field for a few days. As for Air travel, some of the things you'd want to put in your bug out bag you'd not get on the aircraft. You can use the Bugout Bag, the 3 day pass and the 3 day elite, as general bags, they are a bit costly, but are well made and have a good warranty, They are also expandable, so you can tighten the straps when you have a small amount in it and expand the straps when you need to fill it. you can also hide away the straps on the Bugout bag to make it hand luggage on aircraft. I recently used my 3 day elite on a trip to Turkey, as hand luggage, had all my main essentials in it, passport, cash, washing stuff, cameras, change of shirt, socks, waterproof jacket, a bit of chocolate and my laptop. fitted neatly in the over head locker. "Not sure why you'd want to take a bug out bag shopping or to work?Because if **** happens whilst you don't have your bag, then what ******* good is it? Think about using it for an earthquake in LA. They can strike at any time, without warning. So if you don't have it with you, then you don't have a medkit, water, food, tools. And you might be stuck in a partially collapsed building. And it is meant to hold everything you need to get from your current location to your safe location. Length of time is up to the individual. Do you find this valuable? |

Is there some kind of weight ratio that can be used to determine what weight can safely and comfortably be carried by a person? I need this kind of info for myself, and for planning my kid's BOBs.

I can't say I carry a BOB on me because usually I don't. I have a kit in the car, van and truck but the main bags are in the house. On fishing trips I take along the fanny pack one and it has most of what I would need to get me back to my car or even back to town. I keep the contents as simple as possible.Fanny pack: Knife Matches Foil Rain poncho 2 tea candles Fishing line, sinkers, hooks 2 film containers of pipe tobacco 1 cob pipe Water tabs Metal cup Twine Multi tool that has can opener, fork, spoon, flashlight, compass, etc. Space blanket plastic drop cloth Safety pins Aspirin Film container of instant coffee A snikers candy bar. Water bottle I have a bad habit of pulling the snikers bar out and eating it cause I like them. I always put it back on the grocery list when I do. It weighs about 3 pounds. The others are larger and heavier. My biggest one weighs in at around 48 pounds. I've packed it around a few times and even a big fella like me will stop to rest often. It feels like 200 pounds by the end of the day. I've been giving serious thought to removing some items from it. Do you find this valuable? |

"Is there some kind of weight ratio that can be used to determine what weight can safely and comfortably be carried by a person? I need this kind of info for myself, and for planning my kid's BOBs."I use 10% % 20% of your body weight for a goal. 10% for a "fighting" weight - running, dodging, etc 20% MAX carry weight - hiking For me at 215 lbs, that's 21.5 lbs and 43 lbs. So my BOB target weight is 21.5 lbs plus weapons and ammo. It's on my profile if you wanna look at it... http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/account/ironhand But the weights seem to work out pretty good. Maybe someone else has a better ratio, but I think it's pretty realistic. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Is there some kind of weight ratio that can be used to determine what weight can safely and comfortably be carried by a person? I need this kind of info for myself, and for planning my kid's BOBs."Well it's not just the weight, but where you are carrying it. Two differently strapped rucksacks can make 60 lbs feel like a breeze or a nightmare. Really, the only way is to load up a bag, adjust the straps until the weight is as comfortable as possible, and then go walking. As for the distance that seems acceptable, that varies between people as well. I have a few personal tests that I do when sorting out a BOB. "Sunrise Sunset" Since most people agree that daylight travel is the only safe way, how far can you travel on the longest day of the year, and the shortest? The sunrise-sunset times are 17 hours for longest, and 7 hours 27 minutes for the shortest. This is a comfort and endurance test, done at walking speed. "Something is digging into me" How much ground can you cover in one hour, at jogging speed? Doing this will make it painfully clear if anything pokes, jabs or rubs. Change the packing order, move straps, use a pair of socks to pad out the shoulders. "Eject! Eject!" Some people are concerned that the zombies are sprinters. And Raiders are a problem that concern me. Either way, ditching the weight on your back might save your life. So how quickly can you do that? My preference (learned from my diving gear) is to extend the shoulder straps all the way using your thumbs pushing the plastic holders up, and then just pull them outwards, allowing the whole BOB to drop. Takes less than a second once you have rehearsed a few times. Do you find this valuable? |

Hopefully z-day won't occur until all my kids can walk and run without me dragging them by their arms. Wish me luck. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Less is more. You should strip your BOB weight like you would strip the weight of a backpack.I've done a lot of packing, some of it with some pretty intence people, but they do have a point. One half ounce is one ounce of lift required per every stride. That is thousands of pounds by the end of a long day, and, trust me, you will feel it. So, saw off the half of the handle on your toothbrush. Pre-cut your floss and wrap it around the half-brush and toss the packaging. Take the cardboard tube out of your TP. Go nuts. Avoid, heavy, canned food - you will use more calories hauling it all day than it provides. When you can take your bag out to the track on a Saturday and put 20 miles on it (in ten hours or less) without blisters, sores, or not being able to move the next day, then you have it right.
