Survival EDC 1 Complete!

http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/LJ126%27s+%22Survival+EDC%22+1%3A+Tools+of+the+Trade

Where are you going to be when the zompocalypse occurs? At home and within arms reach of your guns and ammo? Probably not. If you're anything like me, you're going to be at school or at work, out at dinner, stuck in traffic... the list of possibilities go on and on. Let's face it - Murphy's Law states that "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong" - and odds are, you're not going to be on the lucky end of things. That is what your EDC gear is for.

This article is part one of a ??? part series that discusses the gear and skills that should be part of your day-to-day arsenal as a civilian. To quote the one of the fathers of science-fiction, Robert Heinlein:

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Read the article, tell me what you think. Don't be afraid to be critical either - you're not going to offend me if you're addressing a realistic concern about the article.

What does that have to do with my new article linked above? I only listed 4 items in the article, none of which require a power source. Do you find this valuable?

LJ126,

I read the article man and I gotta say you put a lot of thought and time into this so its hard for me to be critical.

What I would add to the list would be a cigerette lighter. I don't smoke but I usually carry one either on me or in my truck. My situation is different than most because on occasion I have to relight a piece of equiptment at work when its pilot light gets blown out.

I'm in such a habit of carrying it at work that I stick it in my pocket on the weekends I have off.

Besides I believe your a single guy so you never know when some smokin' babe will ask you for a light.

Oh hell ya. A butane lighter is better than a zippo anyday. You can refill them and there are models out there that are dang near windproof and some that are even waterproof (You can't strike them underwater but it doesn't hurt to drop them in the water). They're a lot tougher than the little plastic throw aways too.

T-rat, good call! Lighters are definitely handy in every situation.

I'm actually surprised that I forgot that one, since I'm an ex-smoker. A lighter (even a cheapie) is a handy tool. Truth be told, I'm actually most fond of Bic lighters; they seem to outlast zippos once maintenance is taken into consideration. You're definitely right about the butane lighters though - they are super handy and great in the wind.

Alright, lighter added. It's looking good to me. There are other items that could be added but they would really be specialized and probably not used every day like the ones listed in the article.

For example, you could throw in a prophylactic, a few band aids, a high quality whistle, a set of latex gloves (or ten prophylactics!), a bandana and sunglasses but then you'd need to upgrade to a fanny pack. Only Nutnfancy is that prepared and it's excessive for my idea of EDC. EDC is supposed to be convenient - and there's nothing really convenient about toting around a fanny pack with you.
