I'm going to further explain some aspects of distance communications that is mentioned in this page.I'm exploring multiple alternatives to provide the best possible listing of ways for survivors to enable contact. One of these is relay stations in a series to extend range as well as forward operating locations (FOL) a certain distance from the colony HQ. Do you find this valuable?

"You know what would be great for Post Z-Day...Actually, I'm going to try and consider and throw the big net (any ideas please add) for all sorts of comms: AM radio stations CB Ham FM Satellite FMRS handhelds (some up to 30 mi range!) Do you find this valuable? |

You might want to talk to StrykerPez. He seems to know a little about this :)

I know from experience that FMRS is pretty suceptible to interference from objects. Maybe just crappy units I've bought(8-10 mi range), but I think it is more that they need decent line of sight. That said the ones I've bought usually work to at least 50% oftheir advertised range. Do you find this valuable? |

Yes, especially if on low batt. If fully charged, line of sight is 20+ miles on some models. If that's all you had, then a 'staggered' strategy might be best: base station (w/gen power for example) has high immobile antenna for say 35 mile comms. A forward post about 20 miles out has full TX/RX w/base. Recon units keeping about 10-15 mi from FP can TX/RX relay through FP to base. Effectively having relative contact 50 miles away. Yeah, I've been stewing on this all day, Relay is about the only sure way without area-wide power. If you can get the grid up, it's cell all the way. CB can be amplified to about twenty to thirty mile range on line of sight also. The amps are not that common nation wide. I live in the south and lots of good 'ol boys still love their CBs so that is what I'm hoping to use(don't have the money to get that stuff now), If not that it'll be FMRS. It is so common I can get my hands on it easy and it's not prohibitively expensive. I already have a few. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm not going to reiterate what I've already said in my "Stryker's Comm Corner" thread, but one good point is that the best radio to use is the one that other people are using. This is one occasion where "If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you?" doesn't apply. Who cares if you have the top of the line, digital trunking UHF two-way radio set, but if no one else has one then you're pretty screwed. Have fun talking to yourself. The dude with the $20 4 watt CB from Radio Shack will be better off than you. Do you find this valuable? |

I might make a page for it, but out of basic materials you can build a basic laser communication suite. My friend and I build this kind of stuff and have found it to actually be pretty damn reliable despite it's crude construction. Best part is that it dosn't require any direct line cables, so you don't have to worry about the lines getting cut or tapped. We just need to find a way to boost the range, I'm thinking about converging multiple lines on the same band. Pros: Reliable if built well, compact, simple to build, not easy to intercept the signal (at least without a broad range scanner and portable reciever dish.) Cons: Tempermental, requires line of sight, somewhat sensitive to weather. Assessment, this is best kept to communicating between fixed positions ie. bases, listening posts, forts. I've been looking for an easy way to boost the signal strength/range, but it's hard to do when you take environmental features into consideration. So far, there isn't any easy way to make this into a squad-to-squad communication device, as it requires accurate alignment to work, not an easy thing to do quickly. Now I think on it, I will make a page on this.
