Shields come in three varieties - body, arm, and hand.A body shield (like a riot shield or Roman shield) is meant to defend. It only works in tight spaces, like hallways, or in concert with others. Otherwise, the enemy just walks around to your backside, since the shields are large and cumbersome. In the right situation, there is nothing better (which is why riot guards use them). With a body shield and a short, quick weapon, this is the best route to take. HOWEVER, that requires you to depend on the training of others, or on physical situations that you will not always be able to control. Great for train units, poor for the one man survival show. An arm shield straps to the arm near the elbow and is held in the hand. They do not cover the entire body and they are traditionally thicker than body shields. Since you can move your arm, they can be used to strike. They do, however, have a problem with "tipping." Tipping is where pressure to the top or bottom of the shield twists the arm. This problem is easily solved, by throwing away most of the shield. The arm shield was used to block blows, strike, and shield against arrows. Arrows are no longer an issue. A 2X4 strapped to the arm will still block blows, still make backhand, chop, and punching strikes, and has improved visibility. The hand shield (buckler) is good for striking, but is only good at defending against jabs. It is a specialized tool for rapier combat, and would not be your best choice in any survival type fighting. 6 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

"probably a good solid oar. one soloid piece of wood with nice range. not to heavy. easy to wield."An wooden oar is very easy to break, a piece of wood that long and thin would snap if you tried to hit anything other than water. Also an oar would be too light to use effectively as a weapon. The lighter the oar, the easier and faster you can row. I don't think they design oars for anything other than rowing, so you're probably only going to find heavy oars. My favorite practical melee weapon is the brush axe. It's fairly heavy and about as long as an arm. Second is probably the crowbar. Aside from its obvious uses as a tool, it's also easy to swing hard into a zombie's skull. If I could have any melee weapon though, it would be this thing. http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Fallout-3-Fans-Meet-the-Auto-Axe-2.jpg 0 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Relax yourself. And a kukri's great unless you miss a swing and hit yourself with it. Which will probably happen when you go running into a group of zombies swinging it like a madman.

I'm not a madman, I'm relaxed :) and come on you can hit yourself with any melee weapon if you cant handle it. Besides it's a lot more easier to hit yourself with something big and heavy (like baseball bat or crowbar).Kukri is ideal - its heavy to have enough momentum, its sharp so it will be easier to destroy zombie brain, it's not as big as a bat and can be used as multitool (knife, axe, hammer). Its great for striking its a hell of lot better to use it for blocking grasping hands, bashing wrists, jaws, etc. and in melee combat with a human your at an advantage in a fight were the adversary doesnt have one. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. What do you guys think of the hook swords (shown in an episode of deadliest warrior) and please skip over telling the practicality of obtaining or training to use one for the love of god. I'm sure anyone who would be smart enough to survive the initial days of a zombie infestation would realize such aspects already.

like a scimitar or a hand sickle? i would imagine both would fair very well. a scimitar was built for slashing like slashing a head off. and the hand sickle was made specifically for decapitation

If I could gain training, I would go with a weapon that embraces my Scottish heritage - the claymore! It was essentially a " Lets see how big we can make this and still allow a human to be able to use it" kind of sword. No matter your feelings on swords, I doubt that anyone can disagree that a claymore could crack a skull.Minor note: I do mean the sword, not the land mine. Do you find this valuable? |

The tigers head or Shuanggou(hook sword) would be ok, you know you need training and that is really all that matters. Nearly any weapon would be ok, as long as you know how. This one has excellent potential to grapple and defend with. Zombie wanders up for a nibble with arms extended, you slide to your left, hook his right arm below the hand pull on sword and push on his shoulder( keep fingers away from his face) unhook at last second and he's gonna fall down on his face if it's a shambler. Then you can easily dispatch with a stomp to the back of the neck, or just run along(my advice).I will question the use of one handed blades against zombies till my dying breath. So that is my only issue with the tigers head. The reasons are: 1. It is not at all easy to behead a human.40lb guillotine blades often had to be used two or three times during the french revolution. 2. While one can injure one's self with any weapon you carry, a blade has A huge chance of infecting you if you nick your self with it. 3. Only a extremely hard strike will break a leg bone, so you can't cripple you have to go for the kill. 4. There are ManY crappy blades out there to buy, only a few good ones. You have to really do your homework(and most people don't) @agent- The claymore is one of the few blade I feel would do a fine job on zombies. The real issue with it is weight, it will pretty much replace your long gun if you include it with a kit. That said, if you aren't a super sniper it might be worth it if you put in the time to become good. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

"My japanese naginata just recently got shipped here and I'm lovin the hell out of it. It need a bit more sharpening for my liking but it will hack limps none the less. It's about 6 feet so it is out side of arms length. It stabs, slices, and is a hell of a lot of fun to wield."Its ninjato and ninjatos arent 6 feet long ,smart one 0 out of 6 found this valuable. "Its ninjato and ninjatos arent 6 feet long ,smart one"Umm the naginata is a spear used by heavy cavalry in the Japenese feudal era. It is about 5 1/2 to 6 feet long. I also own one and mine is about 6 feet long. The ninjato was a sword used by ninjas. Do your homework before you talk trash. 9 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you? |

All the information i've looked around for -just deadliest warrior and wiki ;3- says that claymores would be about 5 1/2 pounds and too me, that isn't that much to run with, and even with say a rifles weight, the ammo for it and whatever other necessities i can't see the weight load getting past 20-25lbs, which though i'd admit it'd slow me down a little bit, it won't sacrifice a considerable amount of speed compared to the usefulness of the stuff, but this is also taking into account some of the weighted physical training i do.. Also DLOWTHEMAD, -still not trying to greatly contradict- could the guillotine stuff you mentioned be due to a dulling of the blades from use? Which Leg bone(s) are you referring to? And what fun is a zombie apocalypse without getting a little risky with infection ;3 Do you find this valuable? |

I think I'd just go with a short metallic pipe. Light enough that I can recover quickly, over and over again, but packs a punch. I'm confident that it'd put a zombie down. And what I like about blunt weaponry is, of course, you never have to worry about sharpening. I <3 durability.
