The datrex bars and others like are standard lifeboat food. They are pretty good option for lightweight, high calorie, long lasting rations but be advised you will need to drink quite a bit of water to get one down and they arent what you would call a culinary delight. But good plan so far keep it rolling! Do you find this valuable?

To minimize water usage i would stick to a high protien/vitamin/calorie powder that could be turned into a paste.

Something like carnation instant breakfast. would be easy to swallow, tasty, and would take less precious water.

One thing I would suggest if you are going to store and then drink rainwater caught from gutters. Clean out your gutters more frequently than you currently do. Disconnect the downspout from the barrels before you do, so no cleaning agent gets in the barrels.

Once they are cleaned, don't forget to reconnect, and then add a few drops of bleach to keep the water from having bacteria grow in the meantime.
