Parthian Tactics
Nov 22 2009, 8:46 PM EST
Parthian tactics were carried out by some of the most successful nomadic tribes in ancient times. Its the use of light calvary to weaken and disorient and heavy calvary to move in for the kill. I've gotten everyone's message on their disdain for using horses but if you had a group of people mounted on dirt bikes, ATVs and UTVs you could have an awesome force of light and heavy calvary to pick zombies lured out into the open apart. Dirt bikes would be the light calvary, the ones to lure the Zs out into the open. ATV mounted combatants armed with scoped rifles could be in a good position to thin out the ranks of Zs as they appeared (their handlebars would make a good gun rest) and retreat when they got too close. UTVs (Polaris Razors, Kawasaki Mules, Yamaha Rhinos) would be the heavy calvary armed with assault rifles and shotguns with the guy in the passenger seat dealing death while the driver gets him in position. So what do you think? Not the best tactics for raiders but for unarmed zeds you'd have a good chance of staying out of harms way while thinning the herd. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

Even have a few trucks bringing up the rear. I've often envisioned a faster, more mobile group of fighters heading in first, followed by the support teams and scavenging parties. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Well I'm not really a vehicle/horse person. Infantryman myself so I could learn quite alot from this thread. My only concern would be maintaining them and keeping them supplied. And of course it depends on what sort of ground you have. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I've had some thoughts along these lines (and some experience during deer hunts in Mississippi).I think I can come up with some graphical depictions of tactical formations. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

As far as maintaining vehicles, check out the (as of yet incomplete) ZS Garage...Hmmm. I really do need to work on that. And we need a horsemanship page. TR, you wanna see about that? I'd love to help, what with growing up on a horse ranch and all, but I don't have enough time to contribute regularly to the Vehicles page as I had hoped so I don't want to commit to yet another page. But... back to thread topic. Using fast, mobile infantry mounted on horses, motorcycles, or quads to go in first, followed by gunners on utility vehicles or sandrails, followed by heavy gunners and artillery on trucks, followed by Semi trucks or vans to scavange supplies or survivors sounds like a good idea to me. Once an area is cleared and the convoy has moved in, the semis and vans stop in the center of the grid, while the mounted infantry stops to form a defensive perimeter on foot, and the heavy infantry keeps circling in the utes. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "I've had some thoughts along these lines (and some experience during deer hunts in Mississippi).Thank you M_D. This is just an idea but put in the hands of a professional I think it could go somewhere. The Mongolians ruled a huge empire in the east. The countries they couldn't defeat or simply gave up on were Japan, Vietnam and Afghanistan. All countries the US has faced in war. One of their survival methods was to open a vein on one of their mounts and drink its blood.........Thats hardcore. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I wrote a page on breaking a horse to the shot. I'll see if I can add more to it or give some basics on horseback riding in general. Although I don't have a lot of experience in using pack horses I could put together some information on that as well. If folks could grasp on to the fact that pack animals like horses and mules can carry 5 times as much as them they might be more interested in something like that. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "Impressive."other than the artillery part, practical in use of combat power. Not sure on logisitcs and how often this can be repeated. 'Heavy' forces tend to leave big 'footprints' and hunger for resources. The price tag is also impressive. :-) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I've got an idea that incorporates putting together TR & StrikerP's discussion into a full mission that will illustrate a practical application IMHO.I think you will like it but it will probably be later this week (T-day) when I have some time to give it full attention. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Its going to be crazy noisy but highly mobile and probably one of the few truely effective tactics for a smaller group to keep a smaller group from being overwhelmed. The Fuel might become problematic over the long run.

When discussing vehicle ideas, I have to keep in mind that I base my thought process on some information that many of you don't have. I have access to several oil wells, as well as a centrifuge that can purify crude enough to let it run older diesels. On top of that, I have mapped out every trainyard and shipyard where you are sure to find bunkers full of fuel oil that most survivors wouldn't think to use. Not to mention the hundreds of gallons of diesel already stored in tanks at my BOL. Fuel is not a worry for me.... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

When I first signed up for the Army, I was disapointed that I couldn't get into the Infantry. I asked what was the next best thing...The recruiter said 'Cavalry Scout'. I'm glad he pointed out that Job. I've got lot's on experience in participating in Mounted (On Vehicle), Dismounted (On Foot), and the combination of the two... I'm all for this tactic... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hey there,I was in the Army from 89 to 92 and my MOS was (11B)Light Infantry. I was attached with the 101st Airborne during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. *When it was time to reup, I wanted to reclassify into a Cavalry Scout Unit, but I was wounded pretty bad during Desert Storm, so I got out in 92. Anyway, I dont think conventional tactics will work against the "INFECTED" in as much as artillery is in fact not designed or even intended to kill large amounts of "enemy combatants", its main function is two things,1) to keep their heads down 2) A demoralizer, scare them, make them not want to fight and to get the hell out of there, In Desert Storm, the 1st two months of the war, we sat on the sidelines and watched as airpower and artillery pounded away and while yes there were 1000's killed, there were over 25,000 wounded and the intended result of over 180,000 scared Iraqis who surrendered before any ground operations ever began. All that ordnance dropped cost billions of dollars, but saved tens of thousands of lives on our side because it made 90% of their forces surrender and not fight. Apply that to undead warfare, not the same result, yes ,it will kill lets say 5,000 or so , cripple another 25,000 or so(maybe worse than a standing ghoul) and 180,000 who keep coming not touched or demorilized. Having access to this type of weaponry assumes we will still have a standing government that would respond swiftly and decisively to deal with a disaster within our borders, does anyone remember Hurricane Katrina/Rita(2005) In the real world, I am an Independent Insurance Adjuster and I worked for FEMA during that horrible time in the Gulf Coast and I will never forget that year and a half that I was there and don't forget these are the same people who will coordinate a response to an NBC(NUCLEAR,BIOLOGICAL,CHEMICAL) Type Pandemic. Any military response to deal with the undead will be dealt with by weekend warriors(NATIONAL GUARD, and RESERVES) and as of now 80% of them are in Iraq and Afghanistan along with our Active forces who also have occupation forces that must be manned in Germany,Okinawah,Japan, South Korea. Any effective response will come from private citizens banding together as if we still do have some type of government, they will be more concerned with placating all the ACLU types with some B.S.Undead Protection Act. Horse mounted cavalry might work in good circumstances, but in a world where we are fighting the dead, we will also have millions of citizens who will be dealing with starvation, every raider will be coming at us just for the horse meat, how will we feed these animals, they need over 5 gallons of water per day to stay in top shape. On to the vehicles, how will you process crude oil in a world with no electrical infustructure(bio-deisel ) might work, but we would most likely have to scavenge for existing supplies . Smaller units 4 to 6 off road vehicles ,light pickups will have to suffice as sorry to say but strykers and bradleys will not be available, they are gas pigs anyway and the ones who may have them will not be concerned with helping us as they will most likely be around perimeters of quarantined citizens with lots of razor wire, if there is still a government ,its MARTIAL LAW FOR THE UNITED STATES, but for the citizens who want to take out the dead ,we will be on our own because our government will have another name for us (REBS).There are enough of us that before the "INFECTION" were so called "PARANOID SURVIVALISTS" that have been stockpiling Dehydrated food, distilled water, ammo that together with logical assessments and tactics with other like minded individuals, a difference can be made. Don't misunderstand me in anyway because in good circumstances, the artillery and light and heavy infantry would be a great success, but in circumstances where we wouldn't have to worry about ammo or delivery systems to hand the dead their asses, why not just a couple of AC130 GUNSHIPS in which each aircraft is capable of 10,000 rounds a minute from 30mm miniguns and can put 5 rounds on every square inch of a football field in under 20 seconds and all you would need would be some mop ups to handle the stray Ghoul that survived. In realistic circumstances, ammo that has been stockpiled or scavenged must be considered a "FINITE" resource and should only be used as a last resort or against other live targets(RAIDERS,PSYCHOTICS)there will be plenty who will want to take what's yours, sadly, but a fact. There is a way to stop the dead from hunting the living and then sending them back to hell while keeping you and your friends relatively safe. Some like it, some don't, but it's real world , realistic and when done correctly, you will never have to fire one bullet .

How do the dead hunt the living? From their Primordial brain function which operates under three senses,1)SIGHT, which is the weakest sense in they no longer have the ability to coat their eyes with protective fluid because in most cases since their hearts no longer pump blood, all their bodily fluids including blood collect in their lower extremities and congeal into a thick black gel like substance and then even the smallest dust particles will scratch their corneas and degrade the cornea's ability to process sight and results in the classic "DEAD STARE" 2)SMELL,their sense of smell is 1,000 times greater than ours in that since their nasal cavities are dry, they are hypersensitive to our scent.3)HEARING,very acute.By overcoming their sight and smell senses, they can no longer effectively hunt and until those senses are restored ,they will not move and therefore extremely vulnerable . So, how do we defeat those senses? In the real world in addition to being an insurance adjuster, I modify Paintball weapons and barrels ,feed intake systems and velocity restrictor's from recreational use (worldwide speed limit of 250 ft. per second) to upwards of 400 ft. per second, and turn them into less than lethal weapons and supply them to multiple law enforcement agencies thru out the country, private security companies and to the Colorado department of Corrections. These weapons fire high velocity mace rounds and slightly larger caliber paint balls filled with pepper spray. with an improved dispersion rate for mace and pepper spray rounds meaning a few rounds hitting center mass of a subject will defeat their sight and smell for up to 10 minutes rendering a subject being able to take easily into custody. So lets apply this to defeating the dead. A modern version of the Parthian Tactics that you have discussed. Mace rounds and pepper spray rounds fired from a high velocity paintball weapon will incapacitate a live human up to 10 minutes, these same rounds hitting an "ZOMBIE" center mass, not just a head shot will defeat their sense of smell and sight for up to 30 minutes, much longer than a human being because they have no bodily fluid to flush out the "IRRITANT" and they just stand there waiting for their ability to hunt return. A group of 8 to 10 shooters armed with only these less than lethal weapons can effectively engage up to 250 to 500 "INFECTED" AND RENDER THOSE INFECTED HELPLESS FOR UP TO 30 MINUTES AND ANOTHER GROUP OF PROPERLY ARMORED CUTTERS CAN EASILY DISPATCH THE INFECTED WITH WELL PLACED BLOWS FROM KATANA'S AND OTHER DURABLE MELEE WEAPONS.All shooters will also be armed with 380 semi-auto side arms(NOTHING BIGGER) in case things get out of control. I have 3 versions of AR15(Civilian Version of M4)(NATO 5.56ball ammunition)Two 22 CAL Bolt action sniper rifle . All 5 weapons have custom silencers. the AR15 ammo is made to hit its target and expend all its energy on its first hit, meaning head shots don't explode, entry without exit. A 22 caliber round will enter a skull and bounce around scrambling an "INFECTED'S" brain. I know people want 30.06 and shotguns and Kalashnekov(7.62caliber) for the stopping power, but god forbid you and your friends are in a CQB (close quarters battle)say within a house and you hit a "Z" with a shotgun blast, the chances for "colaterall infection"for you and your friends is increased by over 50%. THINK ABOUT IT!!

Stealth is essential to survival either from the " INFECTED" or even more of a threat , Raiders and other desperate human beings wanting what you and your friends have. Silencers are an absolute for sniping from your stronghold as to not attract more "INFECTED" or again other humans. It is again essential to pick up the bodies of the dead that you sniped silently as alot of dead bodies piled up in one area is a beacon for Raiders to know there is a stronghold and safety nearby , bury what you shoot, erase your footprint for everything you do outside of your stronghold. Limit all ammo expended from your stronghold to the bolt action single shot silenced.22 cal sniper rifle and consider all the 380 ammo for your sidearms and the 5.56 ammo as a precious resource only used as a last resort as in you are in fear of being overrun by the dead or those nasty Raiders. For all HAM radio Operators, practice strict radio silence, incoming transmissions only, monitor only, never respond. You never know who is out there and what there intentions are. GOODLUCK GUYS, WHAT DO YOU THINK , WOULD THIS PLAN WORK FOR YOU?
