sorry for the necro, but i figured better than starting a new thread and clogging stuff up.

an idea to add to a BOB is the collapsable bucket. useful for collecting rainwater, scooping up water, carrying stuff, everything a regular buckets good for. it collapses, real easy to store.

Edit: Something I will add to my BOB as well is a couple pads of stick notes. Together they are very small, but you could take a few off, crinkle them, and use them to help start a fire. Eh?

Pyro, what do you think of the Accusharp on Trueswords? Have you ever used it, and is it worth the investment?

what are you talking about?
a ceramic sharpener works great for people who don't know how to use a wetstone
people who don't know how to use one are more likly to injure themselves
or damage the blade/wet stone than actully shapen the knive

ive never used it but according to my friends that do it works pretty well & is relivitively easy, & nate, its true that most people dont know how to use them but the wet stone is the better of the two, if you dont know how to use it then by all means use the ceramic. though if you dont know what youre doing with any sharpener your gunna hurt yourself no matter what

I was reading an outdoor magazine, and a writer described how he kept a hot glue stick with him. He described it as useful for everything from patching a canoe and fixing a fishing rod, etc. He heats up a paper clip and pokes a whole, letting him put the glue stick on a key ring. Then, all you have to do is heat up the stick in a fire and apply where needed. I think this guy is on to something. Do you find this valuable?

I'll do as Rocketman did, and apologize for the necro, but there is one other point that shouldn't be overlooked. You can't always guarantee that the person using a particular piece of gear will be the same person that put it in the kit. So yeah, while I can learn to use a whetstone in five minutes, if I am injured or unconscious or whatever, it will fall to someone else to be able to use that item.

For instance, I will likely be traveling with my wife and three children, and I can't guarantee that they will have the same ability to use any item that I have. That is to say nothing of other survivors that we might meet along the way. It doesn't hurt to include items that are designed with the untrained in mind.

I plan on using flight-crew checklists like this one.
