Pistol ammo such as 9mm, .40 SW, .45ACP is meant to have a very large bullet and a small powder charge. That lets it do a lot of damage with low recoil at a short range.

Rifle ammo, such as .223, .308 has a smaller bullet but a much larger powder charge. That gives it the ability to shoot much further, at the cost of recoil and the size of the casing.

Bullets have 2 sizes, metric and standard. 9mm means the bullet itself is 9mm wide, and .22 means the bullet is .22 inches wide. It gets a little more complicated than that, but that will at least give you an idea. For example, a .308 caliber bullet is the same width as a 7.62mm bullet

Did that help any? Or are you wanting more specifics on each different bullet? If so there are far too many to list. The most common rounds are at the bottom of the page though.

Possumblaster is right, but I think he meant to say millimeters instead of inches. Do you find this valuable?

If you mean that when he said .22 cal is .22 inches, then no, he was correct. A .22lr/.223 is a bullet only .22 inches wide. .308, .40, .45, .50, .557, .700 etc are all in inches.

7mm, 9mm, 7.62mm( .308"), 12.7mm(.50") are all in millimeters.
