Cement is pretty tough especially if it's up to code for earthquake retrofitting or in a apartment complex on the 5th floor. Most stairs are 10 inches long by 7 inches high. You are going to need a sledge hammer and a 6-10 inch circular saw. You would have to crack through the cement which, if you are making a man sized hole will take at least 2 hours. then you have to pull out the saw the get through the rebar. Rebar is 2 to 3 inch thick metal bars that you can shape and then pour concrete or cement over top to strengthen the form. Get the saw out and get to cutting. Now hope and pray the stairs don't lead to a basement because most cement stairs in a high rise or foundation will have a solid steel support backing (about 2-3 inches thick). If you get to steel and the brain eaters are about to bust down the door to the stairwell get that saw out to start the blood bath. You would then need a magnesium blow torch to cut through it. But the kicker is after all that does is lead to a concrete wall? IS there a space behind that stair? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I would say that securing the building with barricades would take a equal amount of energy and be less dangerous. Just because ZSG tells you to destroy the stairs doesn't mean it is always a good idea.
I don't think the roof garden will be anywhere near the production of food you will need. a proper BOL will need to be found.

A sledgehammer and a cold chisel. And a lot of effort.

The weakpoint is going to be the middle step. Start out just trying to make a small notch for the chisel before you really whack it.

Maybe i should explain a few things: it's a spiral staircase, and many of the steps are not in contact with the outer wall. What I've been thinking is in just destroying 5-6 steps, making a nice little pit. I don't know if might use small amounts of explosives. If i use sledgehammer and chisel, i'll have to start top down (i feel like i'll fall if i try to hammer the step below me) i'll post a picture of the staircase. Do you find this valuable?

It's not made to subsist indefinitely, just to extend the time i can stay in my BIL(?) before i'll have to bug out. (2-3 days left of food)

If you got a couple grand this bad boy will destroy anything concrete 16" and under in a short amount of time. Just remember to shout out, "Ah am rippah!.... Ah am tearah!.....Ah am slashah!.....AH AM BEOWULF!!!!" while you're using it. It works better that way.

Would it be "safe" to give out the real name of my lvl4 outbreak Bug Out Location, "the not so nearby island"?
Given that Max Brooks says to never give the location of your BOL

I wouldn't. Unless it's a state name (if you're in the States), then that's about all. You can tell people you know you can trust the actual location, but don't do it in a public forum. It protects your identity now, and your location later.

Negative, you may have more guests than you can support unless you want to and tell them to BYOB... ;-)

Completely up to you. I have posted my final three choices for my BOL. But I don't see a whole lot of people trekking there on Z day going "Is it this island? No? Next one..."

But similarly, I won't be putting up directions, co-ordinates or aerial pictures of the final choice location when I start building it.

You could prolly last quite some time with a rooftop garden if you plant wisely and use it to suppliment an existing freezedried or canned supply of food

Learning to can if you don't know already will be the best thing to know cause you won't be able to eat everything as it ripens. So canning is a must.

Good luck building your food supply :)
