Something that seems to be missing from a lot of plans.
Jan 2 2010, 6:06 PM EST
I have been reading a lot of the user survival plans, and all but of few of them are missing something I think would be vital: spreading the word. Letting others know that an outbreak may be occuring, Given, by the time you notice an outbreak, most other people will have done so as well, but it can't hurt to check. My plan involves both putting out a warning on this site, Facebook, MySpace, and other places as soon as I see signs of an outbreak. Also, as it becomes more dangerous, I will try to call friends and family near me, explain what is going on, and make sure they know about the zombies before their doors are being busted in. Again, while others will have noticed the outbreak, I still think it would be good to put out a general warning and explanation, just in case. Even if they don't believe me at first, they will eventually put 2 and 2 together. Does anyone else have that in their plan? Do you find this valuable?

haven't fashioned a plan yet. I don't know how I would do this. I do live in a more remote location, so the outbreak would probably be known before it hit me (I don't live near any military research facilities either).edit: my first, erm, first post! Do you find this valuable? |

I'm not a very good people person, not enough good people around here to be friends with anyways. To bad, too, I need some good pack mules.I wouldn't need to inform anyone, my immediate family lives with me. -WG Do you find this valuable? |

Well, to be honest, it's not my top priority. Although I would be calling up the relatives and some friends if I had a chance, and the phones still worked. I just don't see myself getting online at all when I'm trying to get the household rounded up.

It's not mentioned, but I have something that will alert a select group of people by simply sending a carefully worded invitation to join me at my BOL.Not everyone I am sending it to will listen to a disaster warning, so it will simply be an invitation to spend two weeks at my expense in the Caribbean. I have talked on here before that it will be largely useless to alert people on this forum, because no-one will believe it. For all the preparation, we are still deeply cynical and untrusting. Thanks for the replies. Those are good points.@Kinelta: That's true. We will have better things to spend our time doing. However, I was thinking about writing/typing a message beforehand, that way I can load it in a few minutes instead of writing it as the SHTF. Another thought: you have younger kids, right? Well, in all honesty, younger kids aren't good for fortifying positions or getting your house battle-ready, so you might be able to get them to type it up (although, young kids are also good for getting supplies.) @Pedro: I guess you're right. I've seen enough threads of people claiming to see "teh zombee outbrake." Hopefully, though, more than one person would see the signs. Anyway, it's basically just one of those "I feel better 'cause I did it" things. @WG: I didn't mean to tell people to join up with you. I just meant to explain the situation to people so they aren't caught with their pants down. I wouldn't want a hundred idiots with me, either. I didn't mean to say that this should be paramount. It could just be something to do while you're taking a break from fortifying.gathering supplies. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm working on having the system automated, so with the press of a button, it will send the message by email, sms, pre-recorded voice, the-hated-twitter and any other system I can think of.It will have to wait until I get my shiny new equipment for work, but eventually I am hoping to have a big red Panic button sitting on the desk, complete with "break in case of emergency" glass. Just because I can :) 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Or perhaps we just don't want to be thought of as totally off our rockers, despite our preparations to the contrary."True. I've had to explain to several people that I'm not nuts. Also, Pedro, I'd give you 10 bucks to have a nuclear-football type thing handcuffed to your hands at all times. Do you find this valuable? |

He needs someone holding the other key, and he can only turn his key when the other person with the matching key is present. Just to protect from accidents, you know. If you press the panic button prematurely, you might be carried off to the funny farm.

"Or perhaps we just don't want to be thought of as totally off our rockers, despite our preparations to the contrary."See, I have no problem with people thinking I am nuts. I tend to get that reaction when people first read my plan :) But the problem is that the cynical nature that pervades the internet is especially strong around subjects such as this. Post a video showing a real, bona fide zombie outbreak, and nobody will believe it. Do it on your phone, and the low quality will make fakery claims that much easier. Use your 1080p camera, and the call will be "viral marketing" or "amateur movie". I'm even doubting the mainstream media's ability to convince people of zombies. They would need to just allude to zombies, using words such as infection, contagion, and calling it a form of rabies. Since I am watching for more than just zombies, a generalised non-specific alert message is best anyway. So if I ever post something on here about an "extended vacation with friends and family", that's my sign you might want to pack a bag or two. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

You're right. So, it brings up the question: if there was an isolated outbreak, how would we prove it? Ideas?Other than a live zombie, I can see no way. Do you find this valuable? |

Take allot of pictures or video and sell them to the news media, or tabloids! If it's isolated and you will live threw it you might as well make some cash from it. Do you find this valuable? |

I would probably post a warning on here - I would be on the computer anyway, as I use it to view and use the defences on the outer perimeter of my house-fortress.

I suppose if cell towers were still accessible I would warn people but only after the house has been sufficciantly baracaded. (and yes people think i'm strange for even having a plan) my question is (since everyone seems to be in agreement that you should barracade yourself in)What happens if you are on the run? A couple windows have been busted in and they know you are there. You only have a few minutes to grab supplies and hit the road. Where do you go and what do you do? Thats where I always get stuck Do you find this valuable? |

"What happens if you are on the run? A couple windows have been busted in and they know you are there. You only have a few minutes to grab supplies and hit the road. Where do you go and what do you do? Thats where I always get stuck"If this is where you get stuck, you need to brainstorm some ideas of where you can go. Your chances of finding a good place to hole up when on the lam will be increased if you have some ideas of where to go. They might not as perfect as the original planned location, but it's better than trying to decide when you've got someone or something on your heels. I think that multiple back up plans are a good thing. It gives you some wiggle space 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'll sort out wiring it up and getting the perspex case myself. Edit: That perspex case is called a Molly-guard. Named after a programmers daughter, Molly, who turned off the IBM 4341 mainframe twice in one day. (They had an actual BRB for a power switch. The 80's was a time of pure awesome unrecognised.)
