You say you don't own a firearm and wont get one until you're a SEAL, but what are the odds of that actually happening? No offense but that's tough to get into. Get a firearm now if possible (If you're of age), and train with it. You don't need special forces training to hit a slow moving target. Get a bird hunting shotgun, and learn to shoot skeet. Then get a rifle and practice with it. Handguns come natural after being able to use rifles. Not only will this give you more protection now (from zombies or criminals), but it'll give you an edge up in training. (It won't look good if you can't qualify with an M9 in boot cause you've never trained with anything.) And what kind of sword do you own? Unless you paid 10,000 bucks for a razor sharp hand-made katana, odds are it's a show piece for collecting. REAL swords are hard to come by. Wouldn't trust a novelty for hacking zombie heads off. Get yourself something you don't have to get that close to use (a gun). Oh and good luck in your endeavors toward becoming a SEAL. Do you find this valuable?

Hit a slow moving target? Try just hitting a moving target in a zone about the size of a couple of apples.

And handguns come naturally? Rifles differ greatly from handguns. If you do not hold either correctly, you will miss - and getting headshots with a handgun does not come naturally.

You can probably come across a good blade for around $4k.

Don't assume that the zeds will be the slow moving ones or it will be a bad day for you when the "darn" thing runs you into the ground since they don't tire. Do you find this valuable?

Yep get ready for BUDS. It takes a special person to stay awake with no sleep, be border line or hypothermic, basically water logged for thrashing in the ocean, sand in every orifice, lack of food, physically worn out, and anything else you have never or rarely experienced and keep on trucking. Besides, a shotgun works wonders on a Zed and does not require you to have a trained to surgical aim. The only draw backs to a shot gun, you have to watch your muzzle coverage more for friendlies (which may not matter if they made a fatal mistake - they would probably like to die before they could be turned), you do not have as many rounds in the mag unless you have a dream shotgun like an AA-12 with drum or SPAS-15, there is a larger recoil kick, and you do not have the range of an assault rifle even with slug rounds. Shotguns are awesome for CQB and the shorter the better for CQB - shorter allows you to bring the shotgun to bear quicker, you can maneuver in tighter quarters, the shot spreads faster for max tissue damage, and since you can maneuver quicker less of a chance for your firearm to be taken or you miss your target because of shot spread. Regardless if you have a full size shot gun or not, you should have a good side arm. If something grabs the shot gun and for some reason you can not shoot the shot gun or it misses, push it into or let them have it (this is usually a great distraction or it gives you distance for the next move), and draw your side arm and go for the head since you are so close.

Just saying that it's easier to learn a pistol after having some practice with a rifle. I've been shooting rifles almost all my life, and recently over the past few years started using pistols. I found it second nature really. The grip is slightly different, but the breathing techniques, etc are much the same. I would say that it's a better plan to start with a rifle, which is much easier to aim, than start with a pistol. It'd be a much less steep learning curve in my opinion. I will agree with you on the fact that going from rifle to pistol would be an easier transition than pistol to rifle. I don't think that a lot of people will find a pistol second nature coming off a rifle though.

I don't about you people, but I with Frag-12 and TheLastRhino about the guns an zombies.
I think I am a decent shot with some rifles(.22's,.30-06,.30-30)thats it for rifles that I can use
properly without hurting myself or somebody else, I like shot guns as well I like 12 gauge shotguns the best, because it's easier for me to load one and shoot one an the kick from it isn't as bad as say a 20 gauge shotgun. My Favorite handguns are the Walther PPK, Colt .45, Colt .44, and finally the Mauser 90DA. I think the zombies will be like either the original Night of the Living Dead Zombies or Zombieland zombies.
