want to know
Jan 9 2010, 1:11 AM EST | Post edited: Jan 20 2010, 8:10 PM EST
"I have pondered this question many times over the past ten minutes: how do you make antibiotics?

In a lab inside of your home? Or could you do this deed in a forest of some sort?

I have absolutely no clue as to how to make antibiotics, so if anyone can assist me verbally, I would show much gratitude."

The problem with making homemade antibiotics (or any homemade meds) is that its difficult to control the potency of them.

If you make (for instance) penicillin and it too weak, you introduce immunity to the bacteria and make it harder to kill. Too strong, and you kill off too many helpful bacteria and give yourself a yeast infection somewhere on your body - usually your mommy/daddy equipment.

Many fungi produce natural antibiotics. Penicillin is taken from Penicillium Notatum, a blue bread mold. Basically, if you take a bacterial culture on a growth medium and add fungal cultures to it, whichever one kills the bacterial growth is a winner.

For your next trick, discover which dosage kills the infection without killing your patient. Ta-da! You're the next Alexander Fleming!

Goldenseal and garlic are antimicrobials. I'd rather take my chances with those than trying to come up with some concoction in a homemade lab.

I've taken microbiology courses. I just wouldn't trust the first fungus (or tenth)that popped up unless I had considerable more experience in what I was dealing with. There is a lot of stuff out there, and you need to know what you have before you can do anything with it.

Your best bet is to keep yourself and your surroundings as clean as possible. Wash your wounds (and hands!), change your bandages, things like that.

Not to stop you from tinkering around in a homemade lab, just spend a few years playing around with your concoctions before testing them on youself, or someone else. Animal experimentation would come in handy then.

I am just a combat medic. I know how and when to give antibotics. I just don't know how I would go about getting them. Between that and pain killers I really wish I knew some good ways to acquire these medicines. Not only would it benifit me in my work but it would also help me come z-day.
