Motorcycle Helmet? Good? Bad?
Feb 19 2010, 9:09 PM EST
http://www.helmets911.com/_images/products/brands/hawk_black_motorcycle_helmet.jpgIf you read "The Zombie Survival Guide" by Max Brooks you will notice that he says that you should not wear a helmet because the zombies need it more than you do, but think about it. Scenario: You're in close range (3-5 feet)of a zombie and they are about to attack you. You must attack or they will end your life, but you have to make sure that you do not ingest any part of the, hopefully, soon to be eliminated zombie. You pull out your super awesome shotgun and blast his/her skull to smithereens, but chunks of that jolly dead being fly at your face and you accidently take in some blood and a few hours later your knee deep into your partner's insides. End Scenario. Well that isn't good for anyone and it could've not happened if you just would've worn a helmet. True it my take away your peripheral vision, but you wont need it if your party is looking in those directions and even if a zed head got close enough it is just going to bite the helmet and then get its brains blown in. Long story short: Pros: - Protects head/neck - Doesn't allow you to ingest fluids from enemy - Can deflect glare (depending on brand) - Can be used as a weapon - Is wiped easier than your eyes (blood in eyes takes much longer than blood on visor) Cons: - Can make your head hot - Peripheral vision is shot Any thoughts? 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I have two full-face helmets and one half-helmet.If I anticipate close-quarters melee is nigh, I may don the full face to keep the splatter off my noggin. Do you find this valuable? |

"I have two full-face helmets and one half-helmet.Like MD said, It'd be ok to wear if you knew you were going into a situation where close quarter combat was unavoidable, but just walking around with a helmet on would be stupid. Do you find this valuable? |

"Like MD said, It'd be ok to wear if you knew you were going into a situation where close quarter combat was unavoidable, but just walking around with a helmet on would be stupid. "And a motorcycle helmet is rather heavy. I always feel like my head isn't on straight with one on. If you're so worried about contamination at close range, maybe just wear a mask with a hepa filter and some safety goggles or glasses. Do you find this valuable? |

A motorcycle helmet is good, if you're riding a bike. Otherwise? I find them rather bulky and lacking on protection that'd make them worth their size. It's also impossible to get a cheek weld, period.I suppose there is an advantage in being more or less splash proof, and less constricting than a gas mask. Do you find this valuable? |

"My other half has a Suzuki, he pretends it's a Hayabusa"What? If it isn't Harley, it isn't a motorcycle, just a fast bicycle w/an engine. :-D Oh, and the ''half-helmet' is really a 3/4 helmet and not a brain bucket POS. Do you find this valuable? |

OK let me start by saying anyone ever tried to shoot any long gun with a face shield? If you have then you know how bad it sucks and without a good set of optics you just wont be able to line up a shot (gotta love Aimpoints Eotechs and ACOGS!!).Second anyone who has been involved in close quarters will tell you this second part. The dreaded pink mist commonly referred to gets everywhere in close range or contact shoots. The high velocity blood spatter gets on you, your clothes which are now contaminated and everything else in that room has it on it. The truth is if a zombie is say 10 feet from you, you will be exposed to the fluids. The more important question I would think is not if you should wear a face shield (I would or at lest some impact resistant goggles) but how we plan to decon assuming you have successfully safe guarded yourself. Random question, but do you know if flightsuits are water resistant? Might be useful in that case, tape cuffs and wear sealed head protection.

5.11s are treated to repel water but that is the other only one I know of that is treated for that. This should read repels some liquid not a lot of liquid. 5.11 are what we wear on about half of our ops so for what it's worth. That being said I am sure if you asked around you might be able to find something better. Maybe call 5.11 see what they say they are a great group of people to talk to and are very good with customer service. The other thing is and I would have to ask around but if you are anywhere near the "mist" when the shooting takes place you breath that crap in. Now I haven't heard of anyone getting any disease from close range shooting but I'm not a doctor so I'd have to ask. Do you find this valuable? |

This is beginning to sound like make-shift gear for the scientist who wants to get her gloves dirty.

The biggest problem in m opinion would be the diminished hearing/listening capacity.

If we are talking about head gear protection I would say for the amount of padding you can get a Pro-tech skateboard helmet and an MSA face shield that is removable. The other side is if you want ballistic protection then drop the $500 on a good MSA MICH helmet and get the gun fighter cut. It has a higher cut for the ears so you can either wear comm equipment or just plan hear better. If you look on my profile I have on in TAN. I find that unlike the old style helmets or the tactical Tony Hawks they allow me to wear a gas mask (we use the MSA Millenniums) and wear hearing and eye protection with no problem. I do know they make a face shield mount however I have not used one so can't comment on how well it works but it is MSA so I am sure it rocks.

"your basically saying that u only want to protect ur eyes and face so y not just use a paintball mask? there light and it'll be easier to turn ur head in them"Most paintball masks are covered with ventilation ports, meaning they lack any kind of splash protection. They're also not designed to deflect any impact damage. On top of that, you can't effectively shoulder a weapon without significant use of risers for the sights or use any comm or ear protection system larger than an ear bud. Do you find this valuable? |

Id like to cover my entire head not just from splashes of fluids, but from bites and scratches too. I think John 234 already covered my points though.
