"I SAID BY PSYCHOLOGY NOT THE MASTERY OF A GUN"
.........no, bottom line......no

Actually, tell us how it would help with the psychology.

Sorry man, I'm with Sharpie here. I don't think a game can help you with taking a life.

There are simulators and things like that to practice tactics, but there's no replacing the real thing. Once those UFC games came out we had a lot of guys come into our gym ready to fight. After a sharp knee to the gut and 90% changed their mind.

I'm seriously doubting this whole proposition. If you worked hard at a game like Three-Sixty Pacific's Harpoon you could learn strategy and tactics that would stand you in good stead should you suddenly find yourself in command of a carrier fleet. Likewise it has been demonstrated that a flight-sim ace with a multi screen - authentic force feedback controls - super PC rig can manage a real Cessna aircraft but . . .

Thats not real, not survival, conflict or combat, not running for your life, blood pounding in your ears thinking "I'm gonna be kind to my old mum if I get out of this alive."

Computer games have advanced by leaps and bounds since this thread was begun but I suggest they haven't become more 'real' just more convincing and I don't think that is the same thing at all!
Furthermore I suspect the people who think convincing equals real are in for a debilitating, possibly lethal shock when it all hits the fan.

"once the zombie apocalyspe has started there will be no time for videogames. how ever videogames are wildly popular now so why not see how many of them are at least useful to help prepare you for the zombie apacolyspe. my pick: GMOD (Garry's Mod)
whats yours?"
I think calling up a few buddies, heading out to a large state/national park with a day pack (or your BOB...) and a camera is probably more beneficial to survival that any video game is. There's no video game that's going to adequately simulate the fundamentals of survival techniques. A good bug out bag should cover your bases, but you need to know how to use the tools in it.

Of course, leave a note to someone with a location and time of return, as well as applicable phone numbers in case you get lost, hurt, or your car breaks down en route or while returning.

EDIT: Just read my response from two years ago. Wow. I used to be a lot more direct...

You want survival? Play RE:1 on the hardest difficulty. You get like 10 rds, an Aid Spray and a knife. One bite can be fatal. Welcome to the real world lol jk.

The only thing that I can say in favor of VG's, is it does improve hand eye coordination and problem solving skills. That's really about it.

As long as you use a mouse and keyboard to control your weapon in real life video games are great training. Do you find this valuable?

Video games and other violent media can certainly help in desensitization to the violence and gore, but very little will prepare you for the actual psychological trauma of taking a life. Do you find this valuable?

Bet you could fly a Reaper then.

Side note: We did use Halo 2 as ad hoc room clearing training when our glass house was annexed by a visiting unit lol. Was a good starter for the younger guys in the unit. Was odd having to write up the training program for the 1st Sgt.

Lol, not as bad as you'd expect actually. It covers the very basics at least. It also ended up giving my unit the best Halo team on the FOB.

Tax dollars at work.
