How not to be confused as a zombie
Mar 14 2010, 2:12 PM EDT | Post edited: Mar 14 2010, 2:12 PM EDT
There is bound to be friendly fire in any sorta conflict but when subtract the military training and add widespread injury, confusion, and panic you get the perfect storm of people getting shot by mistaken idenity.

So I'd like to help spawn a thread for making yourself look less like a zombie and more like a human.

Tip #1 Walking around with copious amounts of blood on your clothing may look pretty cool but besides for being a health hazard will seriously raise the risk of being mistaken as a zombie.

Tip #2 Walking about while drunk could be mistaken as a zombie shamble even if they zombies are fast there are bound to be injured ones who shamble

As mentioned in an older thread: a few uninfected people fleeing a crowd of infected ragers (picture say 4 running just ahead of about 30-50 down a street) coming towards you.
how would you be able to distinguish who was who? Under different lighting conditions?

Yeah its very difficult especially when your using long range scoped weapons.

That means your ability to communicate is limited by distance

Tip #3 A whistle is a near must for communications in a bug out scenario so having one around your neck or on your person (not buried inside your bag) could help you be recognized as a friendly.

Since noone seems to have much interest in this thread x_X

I'll add another

Tip #4 having a flashlight on SOS or other low battery cost mode while traveling on foot. A glow stick would have the same effect. Tie or clip it someplace high on your body.

Hopefully the fluid movement of a human will be the biggest give-away. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

"Hopefully the fluid movement of a human will be the biggest give-away."
Well it might be hard to distinguish if the person's panicked.
Tip 5: Carry around a noticeable weapon. A zombie probably won't be holding a rifle.

I always thought, if you saw a group of people, to yell easily distunguishable words. "Human!" "Friendly." "Don't shoot" Stuff like that. Do you find this valuable?

Shouting may attract unwelcome attention.

I would make positive eye contact with everyone I come across, and wave. Zombies probably will not signal people in any way, other than trying to kill them.

So to do the opposite, you wave and *do not* move towards them.

Holding a weapon above one's head, parallel to the ground is also pretty universal for "I dont want to fight."

Well, if you're shouting, then you're probably already being chased. Otherwise, your normal body language may be good enough (walking smoothly

However, I see what you're saying. The holding the weapon above your head sounds like a good idea.

Holy crap, it does. Ironic, since in the same scene he was challenging people to fight ("You want a little?")

Oh well. The series isn't exactly known for adhering to realism.

Hold something.
Zombies cannot conceive of any reason to carry an object, and will only do so if they died while they were holding something and went immediately and mysterious into rigor mortis.
This is also the best way to identify yourself to other survivors, and has no effect on whether zombies can identify you.

Unless the object is a flashlight, hunk of fresh human meat, or a stereo.
But if you're that dumb, you won't be much worse off as a zombie.

a. if im running from a hoard of zombies i have more things to worry about then somebody thinking i am one.

b. if i was for some reason one the move by myself i would move in ways you wouldnt see zombies move. like if zombies shambled i would speed walk. if they ran around like crazy i would be slow and stealthy. and i dont think anybody would think you were a zombie if you were duckwalking behind a car or climbing a fence.

Right..... Up until the point when they think you're just the fastest one. At which point it will become your number one priority.

i would think running zombies would be the living rage kind and if im running from a large group that would more then likely be close tegether while they run i would be be doing something to try and slow them down. knocking over trash cans and maybe taking shots into the croud with my sidearm.

i would hope most people would try to distinguish if someone was a person or a zombie before they shot. if they see a moving figure and shoot first and ask questions later then the prolly didnt care either way.

Do something to make it obvious that you are the one being chased, not leading the pack. IE, serpentine, waving, attempting to climb to safety, etc. I really like the waving idea DevilNuts. I could see myself beading a guy running across the street just to have him smile and wave at me through my optic. It would probably put a very stupid look on my face, lol. Tip #10: Don't travel on foot. Traveling while using a bike, horse, or some other kind of transportation would probably clearly identify you as still one of the living as I doubt zombies will be able to do that. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
