Alright guys, ya got me. Ya got the 'rattler.

@Devilnuts and Carnack. No arguing with your logic. I bow to more tactical reasoning.

This has been a fun thread to read, I can see DN come out with his silver hockey mask on, and over a loud speaker shout "Just Walk Away". Or have i dated myself with the road warrior reference. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Even if you have, there was a more recent South Park episode which featured that little bit. Do you find this valuable?

"It might be fun TR, but this is not how a predator thinks.

True predators, either in nature or society will ALWAYS prefer a sure thing. A true predator is never looking for a "challenge," he wants the easy kill - the sick or injured.

Many times would-be muggers are deterred by the simple fact that their potential target is upright and situationally alert.

I'm not in it for the challenge. That kind of thing is good for training, but when it's game time I want weak, helpless and timid settlements to prey upon. The lion doesn't look for a challenge in attacking the adult bull buffalo - he'd get his ass kicked and then he wouldn't eat. No, he'd much prefer the newborn gazelle with the twisted hoof.

Bodies hanging outside would be a good way to deter me - I would definitely think twice about attacking this camp. "
on that note, if killing isn't as hard as many say it is, i might even spike them vlad the impaler style... or do other things vlad did. also, i have thought up some seriously nasty torture methods that would leave a "trophy" and deter raiders.

however, i dare not tell you guys, as i like not living in an insane asylum.

I was reading through this thread(more like chat room) and loved it, I saw some things on here I wanted to comment on and since the principle of the thread is good I figured no one would mind if I bumped it.

First, NEVER KICK A GERMAN SHEPARD. Its not a rott. I have body slammed a rott. My pastor's rott charged me when I came in his fence one time(just once) and he got flipped on his back, now I don't think he was attacking per se but I wasn't taking any chances. Rotts are just small labs with locking jaws, in fact I'd be more afriad of an angry lab than a rott, as labs tend to only attack when they feel its REALLY important and they are willing to die. German Shepards are labs on roids, they defend their masters to the death, but they got the attitude problem of a trained pit.

On topic: I see a lot of people talking about a large fort being like 30 people. That's not large, that's rather small and I could easily see DN's tactics working. IF things go the way they should our settlement should start with atleast 100 men, women, and children and only grow as the zombie threat lessens.

So the way I imagine it would be setup(I'm not in charge) is many homesteads/farms around a fort(in my case a cave and later a fort) that stores food and extra munitions. It would also act as the center of government(mainly just an elected judge until the population demands a stronger government), defense(everyone would rotate duties that is capable), and protection(a place to go if things get bad, zombies, fire, raiders, etc.). In this way there would be nothing for your spy to see, they ain't going in the fort because they have no reason to. The two lookout posts(one on Lookout mt on the south the other on Long mt on the North) would be pretty noticeable. Your spy would more than likely be taken in by a family and put to work in a field. I would be suspicous if they would want to go wonder around <tbc>

the valley in the middle of the night. I'd probably tell a kid a straight out no. If it was a woman her actions would make me curious enough to grab some guys and go follow her.

But like I said, you wouldn't really need to send anyone in. Our settlement would be friendly, unless we learn not to be. So if you came in as a trader you would be more than welcome, we'd probably throw a party if we hadn't seen anyone for awhile and treat you as our guest for atleast a few days. Again you won't gain much useful insight other than we are a village with a locked up silo/fort. There would be no way you could sneak up on the valley with a force big enough to take us out without being seen. You personally could seek into the valley but not with a large group, the land won't allow it. From Lookout Point I can see all the way to Marble Falls, twenty miles away. So you would leave with your "son", or "sister" or whatever, a village of peaceful friendly people that appear to be an easy target. When you come back you'd find the same thing you'd find if you invaded today, alot of military men willing to fight and die for their homes and families. Except we'd have a fort. Now sure with enough men and firepower you could beat us, but remember that when someone is fighting to protect their home they fight a lot harder than someone fighting to take it. This used to mean invaders had to have much greater numbers than defenders, today we win by having better technology, after the end of the world it'll probably be a mix of both, but if you don't have better firepower you better have a lot more people. I can't afford to assume that if I give you what you want you'll leave us alone, or that if I run you won't kill us one by one and enslave our boys and rape our women, your raiders why should I assume you're anything less than monsters?

It's simple. If we were monsters we wouldn't be having a conversation - I would burn you out in the night and then help myself once you've gone out.

I know this is a horrible necropost, but I figured it was worth trying to recycle for nostalgia's sake.

A monster does not have to be dumb.

Not saying you should treat them like the worst but always expect them to become the worst and plan accordingly and secretivly.

I would like to add that I think most raiders will be heart-breakingly desperate good people not intent on raping and enslaving, I think it would be more important to be popular in your surroundings and establish your skill over your goods. =^_^= Do you find this valuable?

I was about to say that, Dono.

also, am I the only one who freaks out upon seeing the banner ads for kesha thinking "holy balls, the zombies are having tours and making crappy music"?

Maybe so but it means little. Someone making a bad choice for a good reason doesn't negate the fact that they are setting themselves directly counter to the interests of another.

Aggression insues.

Okay, I am going to lock this, and by request move it to T.O.L.

Just wanted those who may not have seen it yet to have a chance before it disappears. I think a few of us actually learned a great deal over the entire evolution of this topic.
