Trailers / Mechanized Camping / Bug Out Trailer

I gotta stop making everything sound Militaristic...

I was reading 'Living cheap in your vehicle' when I had a small memory jogged out of my head:

http://www.socalteardrops.com/

http://www.golittleguy.com/teardrops/

http://tinycamper.com/index.htm

I remember reading an article about these things over a year ago when I first started working at the Hyatt hotels in Seattle.

There's always talk about taking an APC / Tank & blasting your local environment to hell...

Or talk about turning your M35 into the ultimate BOV...
*Note* I'm not knocking you StrykerPez! I'm still jealous!

Or talk about living on a Boat / Yatch / Fishing Trawler / Aircraft carrier...

What's everyone's take on a towable Trailer for 2-4 people? Or more?

*If you lack the funds to convert your current vehicle, or if you lack the Carpentry Skills & Materials to do said conversion, or even just don't have the ^time^ for it...

I think think these would be a great Alternative.

Thoughts?

^EDIT^ Added 3rd link

On a different thread I suggested a luxury travel bus...something about battle wagons or something like that. Most tow behind trailers are built to be very light to maximize the fuel economy of the vehicle towing the trailer...usually a large pick-up truck.

I'm sure a tow behind trailer could be fortified against attack...but I wonder how well they would take being totally surrounded by the undead. They are going to rock and shack that thing pretty good.

Something more substantial like a tour bus or large RV style camper may be a better way to go. The bigger vehicle gives you more mass to punch through obstructions. The added weight will stop the dead from rocking the bus. Armour plating could easily be added. Steel mesh off the windows and build a solid ram for the front bumper.

Yes, I saw that thread. I just posted a very basic set of instructions on an "I-Beam" Bumper for said Bus. I brought this up as an option for those that don't know *how* to add mesh wiring for the bus windows, or making a 'Battle Wagon'.

I was thinking of maybe using something like these while in a Group. Say, 3 Land Rover type Vic's & each had one of these things in tow.

I was also operating on having a rotating Guard Shift once these were deployeed.

I figure all windows should be framed in by square metal bars or square tubing, bent to the proper shape, so you have a good frame to weld either rigid steel mess or expandable steel security curtains, or sheets of steel drilled out in a tight pattern.

This is mostly for the front windshield. The windows in the side of the bus are high enough off the ground that zombies won't be able to pound on them. I was thinking 3M window film for the windows in the sides of the bus.

Square tubing is difficult to bend, You'd be better off cutting and welding it, I would stick to welding solid stock in a grid, 1/4 re-rod would work very well and is widely available. Do you find this valuable?

A camper trailer is an attractive idea but I would worry about the towing of it over crowded or blocked highways or if you had to do any off road driving. probably a better rig would be a truck mounted camper or a Van.
Years ago I drove around the US living in an old VW bus

These armored big buses or other rigs I guess look neato in the movies and such but in the real world I think they wouldn't go far befor they ran out of fuel, broke down or got stuck in car jams

I think a 20' stake truck (truck with a 20'box), with a large sleeper, and a locking sliding door to the box. You can also install an extra gas tank in the box and run a hose to fill the gas tank.

That way you can live in it, drive (in many terrains), have a large amount of storage, and easily armored.
