Gas Masks
Apr 8 2010, 7:23 PM EDT | Post edited: Apr 8 2010, 7:23 PM EDT
I was reading this thread, and it's all very good, but wouldn't a scrounger also maybe need a gas mask?
That way scroungers could get into areas with gas (obviously) and scrounge for other equipment.

Surplus gas masks and replacement canisters are cheap as hell on some websites, and some of a Czeck and Russian ones look seriously badass. If the virus goes airbourne, we are ****** anyways. The mask would be nice to have for all the building, car, gas, etc fires. A lot of things are going to be putting off hazardous fumes. Do you find this valuable?

Yes. Not only will a GOOD, WORKING gas mask will save your bacon if a raider decides to gas you out (like Pedro said he would at one of my threads). Also, if you are entering an area with, perhaps, a natural gas leak, you could get in and scav some loot before getting out.

And here's another benefit of gas masks: they hide your face, especially (sp?) if you can get or improvise shaded lenses. This might seem useless, but people and animals are more intimidating if they hide their faces.

So, in short, get a gas mask. My current French gas mask (Check out my profile for pics) is a great, sleek option. It was $20 at my local M&I Surplus store (there are also Russian child sized masks for $10 there). It came with a carrying case, lense replacements, and a filter. The carrying case would be great post-zed as you could put lunch in there if you were planning an all-day scrounging trip, or maybe some basic medicine (painkillers, bandages, etc.) or other useful items. The lense replacements are useful if the lenses get damaged, and the filter is obvious in its use.

As a bonus: here's a tip if you decide to buy a gas mask. If you find that the rubber sticks to your face, rub out the inside of the mask with corn starch, but be sure to get the dusty residue off the lenses.

Ever fired a weapon with a gas mask on? It's quite a bit different. I don't like it, but at the same time I know how to aim down the side of a barrel whenever my vision is impared, which is pretty accurate up to 20 feet or so.

My buddy has an Israeli Civilian gasmask and I used it as part of a Halloween costume for a haunted hall and that thing was hot as hell! I wore it for about 2 hours and for the last half hour I was dieing in that thing!

Breathing through the filter was tough and strained my lungs and I was just standing around not moving or anything.

What was nice tho was that at least I could breathe when surrounded by fog machines... for a short scrounging scenario a gas mask would be great, but you have to weigh in how valuable a slight breeze on your face would be before digging through a potentially hazardous situation.

I had to wear one for 72 hours straight once.

Be grateful.

The american ones arent that hard to breathe through, but anything that creates a seal around your face will get hot.

Man, I must be a terrible person. When I was younger, we only bought gas masks for one reason. And it wasn't for looking cool. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

You know I have a sneaking suspicion my friend and I used his Gas Mask for the same purpose. But as far as Gas Masks go...I'd say they'd be pretty handy for unusal sitations and scenarios but not actually neccesary kit?

gasmasks would be good if it were a major epidemic even if it werent airborne and you were in an area with alot of dead bodys to protect against other harmful bacteria but would be practicall against undead since they would probably be festering with bacteria and disease they could also be useful if you were attacking an enemy settlement and you wanted to gas them but you only had gas that could hurts peoples eyes or lungs like teer gas so they could be good strategy in post apoclyptic warfare Do you find this valuable?
