Sniper threat?
Apr 11 2010, 7:10 AM EDT
You can buy bulletproof glazing and fiberglass online, and to protect the crew, soak heavy wool/cotton coats in a mixture of 2 parts cornstarch, 1 part water. it will greatly reduce the damage from the bullets, as it thickens on impact. similar technology is used in bulletproof vests. if the tugboat has a hollow space in the outer wall, fill it with phone books. one layer will block up to a shotgun slug.

(By the way, did you get the phonebook trick from Burn Notice?) Do you find this valuable? |

I very much so plan on taking my 12 gauge, with 3 inch slugs and shooting one of those yellow books people keep leaving on my doorstep that I just can't bring myself to throw out.

Go watch the last episode of Mythbusters (S08E02). They tested this out. 1 layer is not thick enough. For the doors, you need two, for the glass, you need three layers together. Two outside and one inside won't do.Watch the whole episode, they go up to the .50 cal. You could run your tests off the back of that. For example. how many phone books would stop a .50 cal? Maybe not useful for vehicles, but perhaps buildings. Do you find this valuable? |

Honestly, I hadnt even noticed this thread started. But thanks everyone for chipping in. I like the phone book idea. It may not be neccessary - the sniper may not know where anyone inside is without a infrared scope - but Im sure there are other applications. As for the other things, like bullet proof glass, We wont be doing that, not for a while anyways. I dont own a tugboat, and so any prior modifications are not possible. Post ZDay, however, if we can get our hands on bullet proof glass, I will jump to the oppurtinity. This sort of "body armor", is it restrictive or uncomfortable?I was contacted with a possible way to stop snipers - a tarp or screen, like a hunting screen, going around the outside of the barges, so that no one can see in - it would be mighty hard to shoot us if you cant see us. Thanks again everybody! Do you find this valuable? |

The body armor, though heavy, moves freely but stiffens on impact, making it rigid when shot or punched. The part that is shot will harden for a few seconds, then return to normal. a metal-plywood-metal wall is also somewhat bulletproof, but it must be in that order. Why? the first metal slab (about a half inch) will cause the bullet to shatter and slow down. The shockwave is then absorbed by a flexible plywood layer, about 2 inches thick, and the third metal membrane stops whatever is left.

National geographic, if stacked thick enough, will stop everything short of rocket launchers. The problem is that it is extremely heavy. What about installing hurricane shutters on the inside? It'd take a bit to find a curved one, but you wouldn't have to make it from scratch, and it'd offer a bif of fragmentation protection as well as concealment. Boat windshields are already pretty tough. The cabin walls would probably be armored with standard steel plate and a spall backer. I'd also create a few fighting positions on top of the cabin and on the deck. I'd make it policy to shut blinds 3/4th when anchored or moving at a slow pace. Do you find this valuable? |

Hurrican shutters? I'll have to look into them. Where are places I might find them? Like Lowes and Home Depot?... These would have to be added after Zday.About the walls, John, are you saying they probly are? Or I should armor them? I would think it's unlikely they would be already - the dredgers probly arent expecting incoming fire. And as for the blinds, thats a good idea. However, I would make it all the time, seeing as slow ad not moving are the only speeds of a tugboat. Do you find this valuable? |

Most bullet-proof vests that do not have plates will not stop a rifle round. The average police vest won't even phase any modern military rifle bullet. If you are talking about armoring personnel against rifle rounds then you will need plates, plain and simple. Do you find this valuable? |
