What quality of ammo do you stockpile?

The spike in ammo prices over the past few years has not only made stockpiling more expensive, but has also made for a much more noticable disparity in pricing when comparing inexpensive ammunition best suited for target shooting & the kind of higher quality ammuntion most often recommend for self & home defense.

For example, I generally see the following prices when buying ammo for my two handguns:

9MM FMJ Target ammunition: .25-35 per round
9MM JHP Self Defense ammunition: .75-1.50+ per round

45ACP FMJ Target ammunition: .44-.50 per round
45ACP JHP Self Defense ammunition: .80-2.00+ per round

With this kind of disparity, the choice of where to place limited funds for ammunition is kind of tough. Do the advantages of SD specific rounds outweigh the downside of walking away with half as much ammo? Hard to say, especially if getting twice as much ammo means much more target shooting to improve your marksmanship.

My general approach right now is to have 100 or so rounds of high quality ammo on hand & loaded into magazines, but I'm otherwise buying FMJ rounds & splitting them 50/50 between stockpile & target shooting. The one exception I make is for my shotgun where a wide variety of ammo seems almost obligatory given a 12 guage's versatility.

What about everyone else? What's your approach?

I keep a variety of ammo, but most of it is decent stuff. None of it is top dollar, except for my CCW guns. Since I'm most likely to use those in a defensive capacity, I try to keep at least one full box of high quality ammo in those calibers (9mm, 380, 38 Spl.) at all times.

I keep at least 100 rounds of ammunition for each caliber, and my more common calibers have more than 500-1000 rounds stockpiled for each. I'm glad I bought a bunch when it was cheap!

Prices are starting to come back down too, which is definitely good news.

Addt'l note: I need to buy more 25-06 ammo! Anybody know where that can be picked up cheap?

I would go with the cheapest round that will accurately put lead on target. Shot placement has more effect than the type of bullet used.

Like possum said, I use the cheapest loads that function properly.

A revolver is a little more forgiving for cheap ammo, but sometimes the brass puffs up in the chamber (had the problem with S&W, not Taurus).

My carries both have Golden saber hollow points in them.

I keep some a couple boxes of Lawmen high grain around.

The rest is cheaper stuff from big 5 or walmart. Target stuff, not hollow points.

Shotgun - Wide variety. Mainly cheap target stuff in 2 3/4' because I like to go out some days, blast and blast until 300-400 rounds are gone and my arm is ready to fall off. It's a nice stress reliever and fun if you have a trap thrower. When it's in my house, I keep it loaded with 3' better stuff.

My .22 has the cheapest bricks I could find and they shoot great.

I like to keep at least 250 rounds of ammo in each caliber. None of my guns are real picky about the quality of the round, except for the Walhter P22. I use CCI Mini Mags for that.
I keep at least a box of decent hollowpoints for all my guns for defense situations, but come Z day, I figure quantity over quality as far as ammo goes. 50 rounds of Stellor and Belloit >20 rounds of Hornady TAP.

I don't use the word "stockplie", that's the type of word that gets liberals nervous. I just "don't want to run out".

Find a good brand, and buy lots of it. Reloading significantly cuts prices, though, and you should look into it. It isn't all that expensive to start loading. Press, sizing die, scale, and components, which would be brass, cleaners, bullets, powder and primers. The most important part of hand loading ammo is keeping record of everything and being well organized.

Record how a certain load shoots, if it feeds a compensator well, if a certain kind of brass doesn't have very good neck tension, etc.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is to never, ever shoot reloads in a self defense situation in normal day. Any competent lawyer would rail you with allegations of your "custom made cop killer ammunition."
