I must seem like an idiot for just recently realizing this, but I decided to take a look at just how much lumber is currently being used to separate backyards. Well, in my current situation, there is over 6 miles worth of lumber sitting right inside my BOL, and I didn't even realize it. With this amount of lumber, I can wrap my BOL 3 times over in lumber, not including the brick wall that sits there now. And while wood isn't the strongest of materials, it would be good for a temporary fix, and, with it's abundance in just about any suburb, when repairs are needed, supplies wouldn't be hard to come by.

Anyone else thought of this, do I seem stupid for taking this long to find the barricading gold mine that was right infront of my face the entire time, thoughts?

Wood is great... until a raider gets a wild hair up his @ss to throw a Molotov at it. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Walls are going to be difficult to maintain against the living. The ideal walling will be preparing for a tank battle. In addition, you want layered walling or fencing, or hybrid so no one can instantly run up to your front door. Remember, your walls have to endure raiders and hopefully the raiders will not have heavy weapons. Do you find this valuable?

I see what your getting at, Wood isn't the greatest, but in a pinch better than nothing right? I guess I should count myself fortunate that My BOL is already lined with brick over 90% of the perimeter, I guess I'll leave the wood for the holes and eventually fill them with concrete, and make gates with the lumber. When I read the title of this, the first thing that came to mind was, "Fencing - like rapier or epee fencing?" Glad to see that isn't the case here... Do you find this valuable?

what I've noticed about the wood fences around my neighborhood is that a lot of them are really old and partly rotted...

but then again I live in a pretty old neighborhood. Suburbia would be good tho lots of fences do to the little yards lol.

If you had the equipment and the manpower i'd suggest using I beams as a vehicle barrier. Six feet long would probably do the trick, just space them every three feet. Bury three feet in concrete and leave the other three sticking up. I beams can be cut easily with an oxy-fuel torch, so that would make for easy prep, Just make sure the one of the flanges is outward for maximum shear strength. You can even paint them a color that makes them difficult to see.

I can just imagine a raider driving a sedan into one of those at like 30 miles an hour.

*Is currently living in suburbia*
Exactly, and with the constant tornados around here the fences tend to get replace quite often, so the wood can't be more than 5 years old.*

*wind from the tornado, not the actually thing running threw.

And to Brandon, that is a good idea, however I'd like to keep the path ways clear so my vehicals can move in and out without a hassle, and the only opening large enough to have a vehical enter has a bunch of trees about 10 yards away, so I probably won't use that idea, but thanks for the idea.

I wasn't sure if this was about Sword craft, Black-market selling, or actual fences.

My advice.... use what you can for Fences...

I've always imagined regular old chain-link would be good for zombies. Not much help against raiders, though. Do you find this valuable?

You'd also have to yank all those out of the ground before you could use them. I don't know how it is where you are but round my way they've got another half their length again (at least) buried in the soil. They're a b*tch to move. Do you find this valuable?
