The Bow vs Crossbow
Apr 26 2010, 6:15 AM EDT | Post edited: Apr 26 2010, 6:15 AM EDT
I own both of these systems, mainly for Hunting Purposes and I have had them ever since I was 12 years old, before I could get a firearms license.I own a 50LB Norinco Crossbow and 128LBS English longbow,as well as a cheap 35LBS Training Recurve Bow.

I was just wanting to start A PEACEFUL debate on the pros and cons of each system,in the following catergories:

Reliability
Ease of Manufacture
Projectiles
Stopping Power
Range
Accuracy
Ergonomics

I have several examples of both , my take...

Crossbows are more accurate in the hands of most people and are easier to shoot well with out the training needed with a regular bow. Most crossbows are more powerfull
....Downside is that crossbows are much slower to reload. Also in my experance harder on thier strings and arrows ( bolts)

In my opinon both would have limited vaule in a Zombie attack , I guess better then nothing but not near as effective as even a .22 rifle
....Arrows don't really have stopping power since they normaly kill by bleeding out the thing shot and don't have the "shock" of a bullet , that combined with the difficulty of
accurate shooting would make for a poor choice I would think

Nice opinion,of course they are better than something.
A .22 rifle would only be good at 25ms with a shot to the skull,sub-sonic rounds would be completely ineffective unless you were right up close.

Crossbows are more accurate, and usually have enough stopping power to take out a zombie.I would reccomend though, that the bow is easy to manufacture and so is the corresponding ammunition.

Bows fire faster than X-bows, but X-bows can hold a bolt at ready - making the first shot faster.

X-bows have a higher fps, but an arrow has more mass at impact - so more "stopping power" and keeps its impact over a greater range (with less accuracy, however).

X-bows can be shot from a prone position of cover, but reloading them there requires rolling on your back.

Neither is particularly easy to manufacture, though ammunition is easier than the weapons.

X-bows require less training, but bows require little enough.

Post Z-day, I'm sure you will use whatever you have when needed.

A large x-bow, really more of a ballista, however, could likely be assembled from car springs, strong cable, and stout lumber (shooting something like a broomstick). Someone with metal skills and time to waste filing could likely make a more reasonable sized one. Still, if well mounted, that would kill some deer.

I know very little about my crossbow, but I know it can be reloaded in any position. It might be a tiny bit painful to pull the line back with the butt resting on your shoulder/collar bone, but it's definitely do-able.

Why? Maybe some explanation would help here. Crossbows were initially designed to punch through plate armor, when arrows were bouncing off of the knights on their horses. If it can punch through plate armor, it should be able to pierce a human skull, especially at the nominal ranges discussed, <50 yards.

Relax, I just thought you using the word usually was funny.

I'd argue that distance. I've shot .22 at 100 yards plenty of times. Subsonic I normally stick to about 50 yards.
