Look up the "Glock Torture Tests". If you can get past the horrible trigger, Glocks are worthy of being a first and last pistol.I don't know the difference in all the glocks. All I know is if I could have any, I'd go for the G18, which I will never own, legally. My best advice for a new pistol owner is pick a side in the 9mm vs .40 S&W debate, and whatever side you chose, go with that for a first pistol. My first experiences were with a .40, so naturally I prefer it to 9mm, which I have had bad experiences with (mostly Beretta's fault, not the round). You can get both pistols with high cap mags, ammunition is cheap and available, and they are both good starting calibers. Google 9mm vs .40 S&W next time you have 72 hours to waste. I still vote that Sig makes the best handguns. Pricey, but well worth it. It is by far the best fit for my hand handgun I've ever owned. Those little Bersa Thunder .380s are great carries though. I packed packed one of those around for quite some time. Small, cheap, accurate. Then the rounds got super expensive and hard to find. Do you find this valuable? |

I can't talk s417 about Glocks. I love 'em! I have a Glock 19, and that will be my Sidearm in the event of Z-Day.The Glock 22 is a good choice as well. 3 big important things to rememver about the Glock series of pistols. 1) SAFETY! It goes without saying when it comes to firearms, but don't get a false sense Professionalism just because the Glock is designed to only fire when the trigger is pulled. People have Misfires quite a bit, and you have to remind yourself EVERYTIME you take it out with you that if it's locked & loaded it ^is^ ready to fire. 2) Holster. Being, as stated above, that the Glock has no External Saftey you *need* a good holster. One that will keep the firearm seated firmly but accessable enough to Draw-&-Fire when the need arises. This goes for all holsters: Inside The Waistband (ITW), Shoulder Carry, Thigh Carry, etc... the Trigger must be protected & covered At-All-Times. 3) Ammo: Do NOT use Handload rounds. I say again... DON'T DO IT!!! They are the only ammo I've ever had an issue with, it will eat all other ammo just fine. Also: the Glock family has a sh31t-ton of after market modifications you can find. I suggest purchasing (after a good holster & 2 mag's in addition to what comes with it) some Hi-Vis sites (like TruGlo TFO sites) and a Tac-Light (Surefire X300). That's my .02 if you get a Glock Do you find this valuable? |

"I still vote that Sig makes the best handguns. Pricey, but well worth it. It is by far the best fit for my hand handgun I've ever owned. But can someone really appreciate the benefits of spending more on something like a Sig or a 1911 when they're just gettting started? For instance, my first buy was a glock 19. I saw the large pricetags on Sigs & didn't understand why you'd need to spend that much. The glock felt just fine according to my non-existant understanding of how a HG should fit my hands. I shot it regularly and never once regretted buying it. It was more accurate than I could be, easy to clean, never malfunctioned & just about everything seemed available for Glock models. I didn't see anything wrong with the trigger because it was my only frame of reference. The notion of spending more money on something like a Sig still didn't add up to me. Then, after having put a good amount of trigger time into my Glock 19, I shot a buddy's Sig 226 and suddenly I got it. In an instant I understood what a game changer a well designed metal frame & a smooth single action trigger can be. Follow up shots I had to work for on the Glock seemed to almost line up automatically with the Sig. I now plan to get a Sig when my next batch of permits come through. Looking back, none of those benefits really would have been noticable to me when I first started shooting. Also, I still have no regrets about buying the Glock 19. It's a rock solid & painfully simple design that's well worth it's cost and won't be going anywhere when I do get the Sig. Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for all the tips guys! So, to make a final decision, I need to know, which ammo is decently priced, readily avaliable in vast amounts, has good power and accuracy, and which I should use as a novice shooter.

"Thanks for all the tips guys! "Opinion only: For a novice shooter, a .22 would be great for training as it is very easy to shoot, gets sold in very cheap bricks of 500, and is widely distributed. The con of buying a .22 is that it's a bit of a one trick pony. Great for training & really inexpensive recreational shooting, but its grossly underpowered for most defensive scenarios. Ultimately you still end up needing an additional pistol to address defensive needs. If we bump up to the calibers generally considered appropriate for Military, LEO & concealed carry, 9mm is a good choice. Its a low recoil, beginner-friendly round and the ammo is usually the cheapest per round for centerfire handgun ammo. I've never personally shot .40 s&w, but my understanding is it has slightly snappier recoil & arguably better terminal performance. From what I've seen, it's only slightly more expensive than 9mm and comparable availability. I love .45ACP, but the popularity of the caliber has really made it a pain in the ass to find ammo for it. When it isn't sold out, it has the highest per round price usually. It's likely not the best caliber for a beginner anyway. There are less popular options with solid performance such as .357Sig, 10mm & .45 GAP but I can't see any reason to recommend them as a first handgun(Or at all in the case of .45 GAP). You're not experienced with handguns if you haven't shot one before. I don't care how many movies you've seen and how many books you've read.I thought this site was 13+? Do you find this valuable? |

Okay, well, I have finally decided to get the G35. It comes with it's Pistol Set, which include magazine lock, cleaning equipement, 2 magazines, fast loader, and the pistol, along with a manual on how to use it. I just love the .40 round. I also got the GTL 22 tactical light which also comes with a laser. Thanks for the advice! I'll let you know how it is when it comes.

I personally would have gotten a surefire light instead. Proprietary lights tend to be crap (SigPro?). Get a good holster, a few extra magazines and most importantly, a set of quality hearing protection and eye protection. For maintenance, get Hoppes No 9 gun oil, some cleaning patches and a good brush set.Reloading equipment, aftermarket sights, magazine parts can come later. Do you find this valuable? |

YourBrain - Without a doubt, if I hadn't ever shot a handgun, I would never ever have even considered buying a Sig. But after some good range time with some others, a little research, and going to the store and just picking one up, I was hooked. I am a terrible shot with pistols and this one at least stays somewhat grouped for me. I just find it to be the best balanced gun I have ever held. But it's all opinion and how guns fit people. I know a guy that will swear on his life by the hi-point pistols.Edit to John - I don't know about those surefire lights. I have seen them in the field and I know they can blind somebody a mile and a half away, but they burn through batteries so fast...... Do you find this valuable? |

Ahahahahaha. It's here! It's so perfect. I have shot around 15 magazines now, and it works great! I regret now buying the GTL 22, because you have to use the other hand to turn on the light. So, I bought a surefire, which has a thing that goes near the grip so I can turn it on and off easier. I also got an Olive Drab frame, more magazines, a side lazer attachment, one of the holsters Glock sells, and glow in the dark night sights!

On the topic of Glocks..My dad just sold his .30 06 so we have a little extra cash laying around and we want a new semi-auto handgun other than our beast of a .357(Grizzly Mark I). I'm wanting a Glock. I havent decided on what caliber yet. I've never shot a .40, is it a good round? What does that round give, stopping power, accuracy, distance, or is it a jack of all trades? Just wondering, Thanks. Do you find this valuable? |

I own and like Glocks, Hk, springfield/kimber 1911s, and XDs and will say I like them all and for a general all around gun they will all work great for you. The reason I didn't say Sigs is simple. Sig makes a great gun (underlined) but for 100 bucks more you can have an HK and I personally like HK better then Sigs. As far as "stopping" power goes don't get suckered. A 25 auto will kill you just as dead as a 45. That being said and I am not starting a flame war, the chances of you stopping someone with the first 2 or 3 shots with any type of round isn't very likely unless you get a CNS shot and if you do go buy a lottery ticket. Other wise the winner will be determined on who either absorbs the most amount of damage and runs off, or who has the bigger and more numerous holes meaning more blood loss meaning lights out faster. So pick a weapon that you can handle well, train with it alot, maintain it, and buy good rounds for it. Good luck and let us know what you pick. Do you find this valuable? |
