Who out there open carries?
May 12 2010, 12:32 AM EDT
Ok, I don't want a political debate here. And I don't want a open vs concealed carry debate either.I live in Wisconsin, where concealed carry is illegal. However, open carry is legal. I have been thinking about open carrying for a while, but I am worried about being harrassed by police and creating a disturbance. I am a poor college kid with no money to hire lawyers, so if I get arrested, guilty or not, I would have a major problem. I want to know who out there open carries, and how they do it, when they do it, and what their experiences are with others in society while open carrying. Should I go through with it or not? PS - my first thread! Do you find this valuable?

"However, open carry is legal......... so if I get arrested, guilty or not, I would have a major problem."There is no reason you would get in trouble as long as you aren't OC'ing in a gun free zone. Is it sociably acceptable where you live? Personally, I would conceal carry whether it's against the law or not. I wouldn't want the attention of open carrying. I have conceal carried with a pistol for years without a permit. As long as you aren't doing anything dumb then nobody will know. Never trust legal advice from the internet though ;) Do you find this valuable? |

There is no reason I should get in trouble. But two years ago a guy was planting a tree in his backyard with a glock on his hip in a Milwaukee suburb and he got arrested for distrubing the peace. The neighbor was who called the cops was "disturbed". He was nowhere near a school, tavern or govt building. He eventually won his case, but it took over a year of legal B.S.Green Bay is a diverse city. If I were living in a small farming town, I wouldn't worry about it. So socially acceptable? That's a tough one. I haven't noticed anyone carrying yet, but I don't look either. I'm not going to conceal carry until it is legal for me to do so. I value my right to bear arms and if I get caught carrying concealed, weather its by my own actions or not, I could lose that right. Do you find this valuable? |

If you are going to open carry, make sure you are doing it for the right reason. Alot of New Englanders have taken to OC'ing as a measure to "preserving" their right to and no other reason. It can be seen as a political statement, and it WILL draw attention. If you don't think you want that, then I would caution against it. Personally, I would not choose to carry open or concealed. Carrying weapons in public brings an entirely new level of responsibility *and* obligation with it that can be downright inconvenient. Do you find this valuable? |

I would proceed very carefully with any wanting to open carry. Not only does it draw alot of attention both good and bad it also makes you a target. We have a saying around here with LEOs it goes like this. "People say I need MY gun to XYZ, criminals say I just need A gun”, and YOURS will do! I say open carry if you want just invest in a good retention holster, and keep a high level of situational awareness about you. Finally I can't speak of other states, but here in the gun friendly state of Indiana carrying a CDW is a D felony. I know what you're thinking, "but I don't go to stupid places, with stupid people and do stupid things..." and I say great! However you get stopped because you failed to signal a turn, or improper lane change or a myriad of traffic infractions that cops make traffic stops for and they find you have a gun (especially if they find out on their own) then you are done. I just don't think carrying illegally is the way to go here. Do you find this valuable? |

I don't. My main issue is Aggressive Panhandlers & the homeless...The fawkers that are dealing drugs know not to mess with me & mine. I don't need to Open Carry, I just make those I see as a potential issue understand that coming back with a Glock or AK is not much more then a quick walk up hill & then down hill. Open carry has it's places, but it is the "environment" to YOUR area. If I'm in suburbia, then it's NOT socially exceptable and you're GOING to get a "distrubing" someone. However, you CAN walk down the street in Cody, WY in a full western holster rig and no one will care. Here in KY, rurally, not a problem. In city, yes it's an issue. This mostly stims from business owners who feel threatened by crime. IF you're in a low crime area, no problems. But if you walk into a liquor store in the city - get really for the police. Side note: depending on the officer and YOUR responses to their question about your sidearm is a precursor to the "charges". So when an officer is called into this situation - politeness and compliance is "better" than a political statement. If charges follow, take THAT up in court. Also, I find that there is an incredible bias as to WHAT you carry. If pack a "black gun" or "flashy gun" you're tagged a "gangsta". Carry a simple revolver and many times people are not threatened and LESS likely to call the police. Why? TV! Sorry, but you can't fix preconceived biases by the media and those that live on every word that comes over the TV. my 2 cents... Do you find this valuable? |

Heres my take on things. When I turned 21 I went and purchased my first handgun. I carried it under the seat of my truck and was excited about owning something I had wanted for years. I drove to my father's house to show off the beautiful piece of stainless steel and rosewood to my old man. When I showed him he got a big frown on his face then he asked, "What 'cha need that for son?" Angered I said, "Because sometimes I hang out in some rough places and this will get me out of trouble Dad!" He shook his head sadly and looked me in the eyes and said, "Son that damn thing will get you in more trouble in 5 seconds than you can get out of in a lifetime." Its been nuzzled away in my sock drawer ever since. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

No one here in Michigan open carrying is illegal, except for law enforcement, military, and security personnel, unless your on private property. When they passed the new conceal and carry laws they made it illegal, for every day people to carry in sight. But they made it much more easy to get a carry and conceal permit. Which also allows a person to walk into a gun shop, buy and walk out the door with hand guns and long guns. I personally have never needed to carry a gun with me. Although times are changing rapidly, to where I have been considering getting a permit. With the up turn in drugs, homelessness, and just lack of respect for others, like when the house across the street from me got raided and had a meth lab in it. THOSE KIND OF PEOPLE JUST PISS ME OFF! I prefer concealed. I see kids (it's always kids and never adults here) open carry. They do it to feel intimidating. And it works. Everybody around gets very very nervous when these people show up at any given location. I have a concealed, and I use it every day. Personally, I don't want people to know that I am carrying. If one of those kids gets stupid, and feels like pulling said gun when a store clerk asks him to leave (well within the owners rights), I want to be able to shoot without him knowing I can.

http://opencarry.org/wi.htmlthat will give you most of the info you need on oc in your state. i open carry every day. taurus .357 mag witha 6in barrel in a smith police issue hip holster. i have my cwp and often carry one concealed as well. i oc everywhere it is legal to do so. when i go to walmart my gun is on my hip. you would see more people ocing if they new the laws. most people that ask me about it assume i have a special permit to oc and when i tell them that anybody can do it they are always amazed. just make sure you know the laws of your state because the cops sometimes dont. or at least they act like they dont. it also helps if you dont dress like a gangsta, and act normal. I would much rather concealed carry, but I don't have the option to legally do so.@Ironhand - good point on the type of gun you're carrying. @ghost - I am guessing its less of a problem for you because you look like an experienced adult, and an upstanding member of society. While I don't dress like a gangster, I do look like a 20-something kid. I don't want to make a political statement, I don't want to open carry just because I have the right to do so, I just want to be prepared. Slowly but surely this city is getting nasty, and I try not to hang out in areas that will get me in trouble. But we live in a sick world, a world where schools and chruches get shot up because some jerk0ff is having a bad day. On the other hand, if living in a rural area, the locals would be less bothered by it, but then, what do I need a gun for at that point? If I'm living in the sticks, its unlikely I will get robbed or mugged, maybe I'll run across some unfriendly wildlife though. A friend of mine said he might start carrying an empty holster, not to make any kind of statement, just to see what kind of attention that gets. If people notice and stare at the holster alone, surely they will if there is a gun in that holster. Do you find this valuable? |

"Heres my take on things.Wiseman (me) once say: Man has 3 worst enemies. His di.ck, his mouth, and his legs. All three take him to dumbass places. For me the only reason to carry at all would be that sometimes bad people do bad things and sometimes those bad people will do very bad things. And if they do and you are in a position to stop it (read: in danger anyway) then a gun will do that. But the second you start LOOKING for trouble is when you put the gun away. I personally would not carry open, this is just my opinion. I see open carry as a great big sign that says "shoot me first" in an emergency. It is legal where I live but I perfer to take the training and get a CCW permit. I know you dont have that option. I see more trouble carrying open than it could possable avert, again thats just my opinion.

I open carry 9 out of 10 times. If the bad guys see I have a gun, I will probably not have to use it.MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE LOCAL OPEN CARRY LAWS! If I find a place that doesn't allow firearms, thats when I leave the holster in the car and tuck the pistol into my belt. Do you find this valuable? |

"I open carry 9 out of 10 times. If the bad guys see I have a gun, I will probably not have to use it.Or they'll target you first. Weigh it. Either they won't attack. Or if they do you'd be the first target. With concealed carry they may attack or they might not and if they do you are armed and are in a position to use it IE breathing. Do you find this valuable? |

"No one here in Michigan open carrying is illegal, except for law enforcement, military, and security personnel, unless your on private property. When they passed the new conceal and carry laws they made it illegal, for every day people to carry in sight."That is incorrect open carry is still entirely legal in MI. We had people coming into Home Depot all the time who were carrying. Personally I would just avoid the idea for the time being, especially considering your lack of income. If you do open carry, there are generally many organizations who will be willing to assist you in your legal battles. Provided that you were exercising your legal right. I would advise you not to listen to anyone on this website telling you to carry illegally. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders though so that shouldn't be an issue. open carry is a double-edged sword. on the 1 hand it COULD act as a deterrent to violence. however, it WILL put you at more risk of being targeted first. are you willing to stake your life on a MAYBE?BTW higginbotham, love the mask. Do you find this valuable? |

The "he will shot me first if I have a gun displayed or he will not shot at all if I have a gun displayed" debate will go on and on.I think I might just go back to keeping a piece in the truck. If I want to remain legal, I have to keep it cased and unloaded, with the ammo in a seperate case. That's Wisconsin's ridiclous Safe Transport law. I always carry my gerber pocketknife, and while a 2.5 inch blade is not particularly intimidating, it doesn't draw unwanted attention and can still be useful. At the end of the day, at least I don't live in Illinois anymore. Do you find this valuable? |
