Persuasion
May 13 2010, 7:42 PM EDT
Being fifteen, I can't disagree with most of the things you are saying. What I want to know, is how can I survive? If the only thing I have under my belt is youth, what can I do to find someone with more experience, and then, how can I persuade them to think it would be more of a gain then a liability to help me?

Wow this is actually a good topic for all the young guys. First things first if you come across an adult please take caution, there are some real sick people out there. Now that being said, me personally if I was looking to take on members to my group I would want them to be an asset to my group.Learn to be a jack of all trades, be capable of building a fire for one. Other things that youth could be good at would be hunting and fishing, tracking, gathering supplies for a camp. Being that your young, I for one would feel an immense guilt if something happened to you. So I would rather you not be any type of offensive fights but defensive is understandable. Basically if you can prove yourself somewhat useful, and my group is not over burdened as it is, then I doubt I would be able to leave you behind. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Learn the basics on a range of subject.Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, 1st Responder/CPR, Fishing, Hunting, etc... If you're only 15 you're going to have a hard time with some of the stuff listed just due to age & Income: You can take a Land Navigation / Orienteering course for starters. Start hitting the Gym if you feel so inclined, if not start running. Martial Arts classes, and not the YMCA Tae Kwon Do classes either. One that will give you basic instructions on handling Sticks, Knives & such... If your area allows it, you can find a range where you can learn the basics of firearms handling. There are HAM (Amature) Radio classes available in almost every country in the U.S.A, and several major areas in Europe. There's a starter list. Do you find this valuable? |

Okay, I'm going to list some of the things that I have that I think might help. Please don't think I'm trying to be a bad ass, I know it isn't much. I just want to see if you would help me with what I have. I can make a fire with one match and I also know how to make one with: two sticks, 9V battery and some steel wool, I love flint and steel (more than matches) , magnifying glass, and I have never need gasoline to start a fire. I have been on one week backpacking trips with my father. I was able to carry everything I needed, catch fish for food, and pack up camp quickly. I have been training to run for mies without slowing down. My current best is four miles at five miles an hour without stopping for anything. I know how to make different traps and shelters, most of which would work well against zombies. And I think my best attribute is that I am not an underachiever, as teenagers are often portrayed. I have a 3.9 GPA, team captain on every sport I have ever played, working on my eagle, going to go to an early college high school next year for engineering, and I hope to make it into the Air Force Academy when I graduate High School. I know that this last one won't necessarily help me during Z-poc, but it does show that I have dedication and leadership skills. Although I am a natural born leader, I am also very proficient at following orders. Now for my faults: My confidence in myself may be misplaced ( I obviously don't think so) It is hard for me to follow people who aren't as smart as I am, I don't care about age. Just because someone is older than me, doesn't make them better than me. I have never had actual survival experience, I have been very lucky Never had a job other than farming on my grandpa's farm when I was littler I will conserve bullets, no matter what (good or bad) Do you find this valuable? |

And most importantly you need to realize that at the age of 15 you are an empty glass that needs to be filled, no matter what you think you know you need to realize that adults do not want a kid trying to tell them how things are done. Be respectful, and a self starter, if you see the firewood is running low be the first one to say you are going to gather more. If you act in this way not only will you be an asset, but they will be more willing to teach you what they know. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

""Okay, I'm going to list some of the things that I have that I think might help. Please don't think I'm trying to be a bad ass, I know it isn't much. I just want to see if you would help me with what I have"OK Mr. B@d @$. Just Kidding. "Now for my faults: My confidence in myself may be misplaced ( I obviously don't think so)" -I don't understand this statement. "It is hard for me to follow people who aren't as smart as I am, I don't care about age. Just because someone is older than me, doesn't make them better than me." -Situational Circumstances will dictate future actions. Sometime's you just have to say "OK.." Experience is a M****RF***ER, but also the ultimate teacher. "I have never had actual survival experience, I have been very lucky" -You're still young. Have you been involved in a Car Accident or Major Accident? How you handle yourself during these times will be good future indicators. "Never had a job other than farming on my grandpa's farm when I was littler" -GOOD!! This, believe it or not, is better then nothing. by helping on your Grandads farm show's you are willing to take on responsibilities that are important & needed. You're also learing things like Time Managment, People Managment, & Equipment Maintenance (I'd Assume). I have a 17 year old Nephew. I'd hate to admit it but the kid is gonna have a hard time in life. He's *never* had a job & his mother isn't pushing him hard enough (IMO) to get him to start taking on tasks... the kid can bearly cook for himself. I already told him he's off my "ZedPoc Team" just due to laziness... How's he going to be useful if he flat out refuses to make his own Mac & Cheese? You're off to a fine start I'd say. "MD Said "The simple expression that you desire to go Air Force shows that you are ahead of the pack (in my book)!Seconded. USAF is a damn fine organization, & being an educational sponge is better then being Cpt. of any athletic team. The lady friend reminded me "Respect the Nerds, you might be working for one someday!" You definately need to be with someone else who is more experianced, but it's just as important to train yourself to be usefull in these types of situations.I'm almost 15. I'm a hick, so I'm always outside, shooting, hunting, camping, riding horses, my 300ex, etc, and I'm kinda smart so I think I'll be one of the last in my generation to die if the apocalypse hit tomorrow. Hopefully It helps to have a goal to look forward to to help yourself train and be prepared. I'm joining the Army out of high school, so I'm working on getting myself mentally and physically fit so I can be the best soldier I can be. Always good to have goals. Do you find this valuable? |

Alright. For the past month or so, I have been working full time. Let me say, it freaking sucks ass, and I don't ever want to grow up. Here's my thought process, as it has changed from working. . . It sucks to work under people, but you guys are right. You do need someone who is experienced, older, smarter, There is always going to be someone better suited for the experience than you, I don't care how hard you practice, you can't be the best. The goal is to try to beat those odds.I work for my uncle, at a car dealership. He is a complete crude jack ass. Bigated, profane, racist, *******. If I had another place to work, I would go there. My point, is that you can't choose who is above you. They know what they are doing, you don't. That's how it works. Learn from them. Use their knowledge. Remember things. I'm glad to have the experience of work, because it teaches you a lot. Teenagers, if you are reading this, please, please, please try to find a job. Even it is just for a little while, it helps you to understand so many things. From the mouth of one of you, I am telling you experience with dealing with people now is going to help when people are stressed from Z-day, and also the stress load on yourself. let me know what you guys think. Trouble I'm having is that I don't have many oppertunities to learn to shoot, get field experiance and other stuff. I'm going to study something way off survival, and might get the chances to learn how to shoot, camp and survive without any luxery in around 4-8 years (When I'll move to another country for future job, which might even change.) All I can do is read, read, read. I can not field test much, which is a big disadvantage! Do you find this valuable? |
