Nice find womule2005. He brought up a very good point about Laminated Maps. I'm still working (I.E. if I ever remember) on getting a few local maps laminated. Do you find this valuable?

Sorry for the Necro Post folks, but does anyone know whether Dave has uploaded a different version of this vid, and if so where I can find it? I've looked through his channel, and while I may have simply overlooked it, it didn't jump out at me. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks. Holy crap, that guy has almost 500 videos! I'll have to browse through them later to find the ones we're looking for, but also to see what other cool stuff might be in there.

I keep laminated maps in my car because I can write on them and clean them off later. Wasn't even thinking about survival issues. Thanks for the tip!

I stopped laminating maps some years ago, the lamination ALWAYS fails in the rain. I now fold them into thirds and slide them into 1-gallon freezer bags. I also keep extra freezer bags in my ruck sack for general water-proofing and wear and tear. You can write on the freezer bags with dry-erase pens also!

Even better than laminated or baggies... print directly from Google Maps onto old-school Overhead Transparency paper. (basically clear 8.5x11 plastic sheet designed to be printed on)

You can even do one copy with roads and labels and one copy with terrain and satellite images so you can overlay them if you need to.

Use a three-hole punch and those plastic report covers with the little pins to bind your maps together.

Keep a spare white sheet of thick paper or plastic in the binder to slide behind the map you want to see, otherwise you see through the whole stack and can't read anything.

But ink on paper isn't colorfast. If the paper gets wet the ink will run or smear. Wouldn't the printing smear off of these transparencies as well?

From a quality art shop you can get spay on fixative to prevent smudging. On the DIY side of things hair spray will work to some degree.
